@terran698, that is exactly the reason why the Tatra design concept has the suspension system working in downward travel and not upward travel like all other trucks. All you guys from America know about is road trucks, anyone who knows anything about off-road trucks and understands the Tatra design concept will confirm it is the best system bar none, that's not me talking but everyone I have met on the Dakar rally and Europa truck trialling would agree.
@terran698, you really know nothing about off-road trucks. U.S. military doesn't use this suspension because all military vehicles must be "Made in USA". But Navistar Defense made a deal with Tatra and they built Navistar Tatra ATX6 / ATX8 for U.S. military (same vehicle as Tatra 815-7). So, U.S. military will use this suspension.
@DiggermanNo1 , in official Tatra magazine from June 2010 (on page 3) is written that on Eurosatory 2010 was presented a prototype of ATX6. I think that it is still under construction (they are probably rebuilding Tatra 815-7 to ATX6 for U.S. army).
@terran698, well I'm sorry its not as easy as that and my life's too short, the Tatra design concept is one of those modern wonder of the world, the more I started to understand the more questions were raised and kept on being raised. I suggest the 1st thing you do is empty your mind of everything you know about road trucks, because that information is useless, then look at the video - Tatra backbone design concept to start.
@terran698, one really clever design fact with the heavy duty off road tank transporters fitted with double reduction hubs is the suspension pulls the truck downwards when under load, road trucks and other off road trucks do the opposite thereby lessening the traction effort between tyres and the ground.
@terran698, the Tatra independent suspension system fitted with swinging half axles works in a downwards movement instead of an upwards movement like all other trucks.
ATC - American Truck Company, was a joint venture between Terex Inc and Tatra a.s., it was formed to sell trucks to the US Army and in particular the US Marines. This truck is a Tatra 6x6 Armax model truck with a Cummins engine and Allison automatic gearbox.
ATC is still in existance albeit it is almost an underground organisation, they are selling the ATC Wildland Ultra XT Firetender to the US Bureau of Land Management.
ATC don¨t exist any more, Tatra bought ATC, canceled that and now Tatra trucks are sold under only true and real name - Tatra by Tatra America company owned by Tatra a. s.
1) OK guys, ATC (American Truck Company) was a joint venture between Tatra and ATC/Terex. ATC was set up to sell Tatra trucks to the US army and the marines. So far no trucks have been sold to the army or marines but many trucks have been sold to the US government's fire department, especially the forestry fire department.
I am a bit sad about this - as far as I know everywhere around world are tatras recognizable by its name but only US makers have to "rebrand" them to ATC ... But i suppose it is small price for promoting tatra ...
BELOW IS DRAKAR RALLY WERE KAMAZ WINS OVER TATRA . AT THE SAME TIME WHAT DO I KNOW TATRA MIGHT BE CHEAPER THROW AWAY TRUCK IT SEEMS FOR INDUSTRIAL APPLICATION MIGHT WORK BETTER
part 2. they would overtake the larger engined competition and finish in the top 3, very often no 1.
Kamaz only win the recent shortened Dakar Rallies and in doing so spend an absolute fortune compared to Tatra who for the last 10 years have not entered a works team.
Tatra is not a cheap truck, anyone who understands the design can see its not cheap to build, it probably costs 2-3 times as much as a Kamaz to build because of all the extra parts in the chassis, transmission and suspension.
The only problem I see for the US military to buy these is that they have hight requirements for shipping purposes. The old 2.5 and 5 ton can be made shorter by taking off the roof and folding the windshield down. Other than that I would get one if I had the money.
bfrance2002, you are right about the shipping issue that is why Tatra have produced the T815-7 version that is fully C130 compliant. Although you might be interested in knowing the Nevada State Fire Department have order a large number of this chassis with fire tender equipment for their forestry department, they were amazed with the demonstration stating they have never driven anything anywhere near as good off-road as a Tatra.
Kinky, Its a simple equation - as far as I know the Kamaz does not have central backbone tube and swinging half axles with independent suspension and rigid chassis / body structure, so although it is undoubtedly a tough truck it will not be as good as a Tatra of any design.
the independent suspension only means that the ride is smoother, and the truck can travel over rough ground at higher speed...as for central backbone tube, it doens't have an advantage over other trucks with independent suspension.
hops111, if other off-road trucks do not have a central backbone tube their chassis's will flex and eventually break, not a fact it is science, the Tatra backbone tube maintains a rigid chassis and upper body structure thereby allowing the independent suspension to do the work, don't worry most people don't get it either.
Chassis flex is part of the reason solid axle trucks have more articulation..."Eventual breakdown" of a chassis is rarely a problem for Army trucks, as the Chassis is the longest lasting part of the vehicle. However, Other trucks with independent suspension have higher ground clearence as their drivetrain is hidden within the chassis.
You don't even understand why the central backbone tube is an advantage. It has nothing to do with eliminating chasis flex...you're the one that doesn't get it ;)
The Dutch army bought Scania 8x8 trucks: When loaded with ISO containers, the chassis cannot flex, so the truck could not keep all its wheels on the ground because the ISO container prevented the chassis to tordate to ground contour: They now use a pivoting twist-lock carrying beam to be able to cross a small ditch ;-p
Brian, as they are military specification trucks they can only be bought through an embassy and the ministry of defense procurement department, unless you can line the pocket of Bush or are one of his close mates like Osama BL.
Dobri Den Profi, I agree with your last comments and I know these kind of issues are very difficult, especially for Czech poeple with their historical background, we both seem to want Tatra to succeed and hopefully there is now some light at the end of the tunnel, although it is a bit dim and far away --- the most hopeful omen is the man now in charge has had the Tatra blood infusion and is pasionate about restoring the brand name.
Unfortunately for Tatra the Koreans will have better facilities and pay more money, so if there is a shortage of local workers the companies will have no option but to "bus-in" from elsewhere --- perhaps Poland/Slovakia.
one of 1st prototypes? You mean 1st Tatra prototypes of 19th century, or the 1st backbone tube prototypes of early 1920's, or first serially produced 8x8 of early cold war, or do you just mean those that became prototypes by importing to US and changing the brand from TATRA to ATC?
sorry, I couldn't stop myself from replying on the 1st prototypes ;)
OK, well, but calling it prototype just because they changed the sign on cab from TATRA to ATC... the same cars were for decades in Warshaw pact armies (more precisely the T813s)....
Yes they are trying to hire, but they are finding it very difficult to get the appropriate workforce back after the Terex downscaling years, and it will only get worse.
From The Prague Monitor:- Ostrava, July 19 (CTK) - The Czech plant of South Korean car maker Hyundai is starting to hire staff for production these days, and wants to employ some 2,000 blue collars at the end of 2008, spokesman Petr Vanek told journalists today.
Most of the Tatra work force are now working a few miles away in the smart new LG Phillips factory or similiar and don't want to come back because they are earning more money in much better conditions, now they can afford to go and shop in Tesco's.
Another American has had their comments removed for being an utter dullard.
