  • Love these guys, but not David, that twat.

  • Put this one on a gold record and then launch it into deep space.

  • This one should have gone to Easy Rider (as Jack Nicholson debuted his old football helmet while riding on the back of Fonda's machine).

  • I think alot of the musicians looked bummed in these 60's videos cause the "MAN" made them stand there like idiots while they played their records in the background. It made them feel like they were selling out. If only they knew the Japanese were sneaking up on them with karaoke machines to put everyone out of work.

  • ever seen a more miserable looking bunch in your life? the only ones having fun are mcguinn (singing his own song) and mike clarke (three sheets to the wind)

  • Gene Clark wrote the majority of the inhouse

Byrds tunes ~ They got rid of Crosby because

they felt he was too political ~ They just

    wanted to make fun music

  • The Godlike genius that is Gene Clark

  • Crosby is gone but who's singing the high harmonies?

  • @MrStratocaster1949 It's playback. Gene Clark returned for three weeks, mostly to help promoting The Byrds "Greatest Hits" album by doing a few TV-appearances.

  • @MrStratocaster1949

Crosby. They're miming to the record.

  • @65Patrician the guy next to Tommy Smothers was Eddie Albert a movie actor who also starred in Green Acres...Dahling I love you but give me park avenue...

  • jangly

  • Wait a cotton-picking minute! Who is the guy next to the Smother Brother?

He Looks like a cross between Cary Grant and Timothy Leary. Shoulda been Timothy Leary doing the intro to this, anyways..

  • maybe they should do this on YO Gabba GabbA!

  • Is it true that the guys were stoned that time? I love this song!

  • @BigfootPreston Stoned? Nooooo.... Hahaha they where probably stoned for three decades straight.

  • the effects look very, very 80s

  • Is this still planet Earth? My ears! Invaders from Mars! Dad got sucked into the sand dunes, officer! ;)

  • Groovy.

  • love this song!

  • The Byrds were just not The Byrds without Gene Clark...

  • If an extraterrestrial ever landed near me I run to them singin' this tune, and hitch a ride off this stinkin' rock.

  • @MaceMn Hahahaha! That's a very good idea. I'm sure some radio transmission of Gene must have made it into space, so they'll know just what you're on about. Maybe he's even joined them.

  • Poor Gene looks like he has the existential flu.

  • @Vesnicie I used to to buy existential flu for a buck a hit.

  • really, are they lip syncing? I wasn't sure I was thinking it was live because the Smothers brothers were musicians, rebels.

  • Crosby was the guy, when he played with McGuinn, Clark and Hillman who said it would be a bad idea to cover Dylan's "My Back Pages" and we all know how that worked out ~ it might, arguably, have been the best thing they ever did.

  • Lip synching was very common in those days. The musicians did whatever the show's producers told them to do; otherwise they weren't on the show. Same old story.

  • Actually Roger McGuinn was one of Tom Petty's biggest influences, and they've become friends. They co-wrote a great song called "King of the Hill"...they share the vocals.

  • Sounds like Tom Petty singing but he isn't. Or is he? I thought he was in the band at one point.

  • @twasbrillig33 no, it is roger mcguinn, but they sound a lot alike

  • aliens landed and marched to my door

and rang the bell 'ding dong!'

when I opened I saw little men

and a saucer parked on my lawn.

    "Why oh why," exclaimed I

of all earthlings did you have to pick me?"

"Your neighbor next door said he wasn't the one

and you were the one to see.'"

  • The indifference shows, intensely.

Gene Clark is clearly being used to fill a gap, to no avail, unfortunately.

Crosby was fired by McGuinn, according to reports.

    Who can say...

Alas, the end of the original group in more ways than one.

    Peace!<-AladdinSane-

  • Some of the worst miming I've seen!

  • David Crosby is seem to be missing from this group, any one notice?.

  • @loneowl7 He'd just left the group. Gene Clark stepped in for some three weeks, but then he left, too.

  • @SixtiesPopGold Gene Clark did not "step in". He had been with group since the beginning, writing much of their original material, singing vocals and on the tambourine. He took over some of David's guitar parts for a time after David left. Then Gene left. Roger, Mike and Chris refused to work with David due to personal issues and growing disputes over material while they were recording Notorious Byrd Brothers. The horse in the window on the album cover was to be David. The rest is CSNY history.

  • @loneowl7

Crosby's harmony voice in in the backing track though...

Great song. It's amazing how many quality songs the byrds put out in such a short period of time.

None of 'em look too happy in this clip...I guess the writing was on the wall...Volatile times, rapid change, great music....compare to Rap which has had us stuck on stupid for 20 years

  • @loneowl7 This is The Byrds in late 1967. Crosby was fired from The Byrds in Oct. of 1967 (drummer Mike Clark left in December) but why they are performing a song from the "Fifth Dimension" album I don't know. That album came out in July of 1966! They already had the "Younger Than Yesterday" album out in Feb. of 1967 with "The Notorious Byrd Brothers" waiting to be released in Jan. of 1968. Weird!
