There's a wonderful album he's done called" Springtime -It brings on the Shearing". Among a number of gems, there is "They never seem to use the tar when they're shearing in the bar" A classic that matches Eric Bogle's "Now I'm Easy". Any chance someone could upload it? (I'm a curmudgeon in my late 60s)
What a beautiful version of this song, I loved it as soon as I heard it in 1974. It takes me back to the Christmas of that year, when I was a young very happy bride. Not so young now but happy enough! Thnaks for sharing this lovely song
I always thought he sang ''Crispy Onion Rings And Chips'' and I was around when this song came out. I loved it then and love it now, but what he actually sang was (and I quote) '' Kristiana Maria Konchevsky '' Who was his girlfriend at that time. Hope this helps.
This song by Shearston will always be Roma and Teelba and south west Queensland for me. Then it remained as I moved on ... but I had forgotten just how lilting is Shearston's voice ... and I believe he's still in Queensland ... My friend Kon saw him recently in Golbourn in NSW ...
Great version of this old song. Shearston's arrangement is brilliant. Cole Porter would love this. The song doesn't sound dated. I agree with many of the comments that the recording is clean. Shearston also had a great track from the same album -- Dingo. Some type of primitive canine from Australia. I would like to hear more from Gary Shearston.
I always loved this record and learned the song from it. I perform it on solo 12 string guitar in open mics etc with the arrangement mutated so the voice and chord extensions compensate for the strings etc that are missing. It always goes down a storm, with everyone mouthing the words. The middle 8 structure has that 'shivers down your spine' thing. The lyrics mean a lot to me personally too. A beautiful beautiful song.
I'm italian gay, sorry for my bad english; I had this record when i was chid and me lost ones. Did I adore this tune and the other side, too, seems me the title it was "Witnessing?" I thank you for post it.
What a Great song!!! How could anyone ever improve on,for example, the fantastic violin improvisation? I can't thank those involved in its "care", on Youtube, enough A gem!!!
Wonderful stuff! This brings back memories of sitting round the campfire at Woodcraft Folk summer camp strumming my guitar and singing this old song thanks for posting. martin(guitarman1973) Smith.
I loved this version of this wonderful song! I haven't heard it since the 70s. I played it to death back then - and I'm doing the same now!!! Thanks so much for posting this!
@jocksmen i did'nt mean to offend you. i was just having a joke! (sweaty sock) is London rhyming slang. --"sweaty sock"=jock ie a Scotsman! So from across the big pond! "Have a nice day" "Yank" !!! HE HE!
One of the finest songs ever written and well sung by Gary. What a talent Cole Porter!
