Johnny's been blamed for introducing heroin to the Brit punk scene when he moved to England in the '70s. Instead of Johnny Apple Seed, he was Johnny Poppy Seed!
The rest of the "So Alone" album is worth getting hold as well. Some other great songs and guest musicians like; Phil Lynott, Chrissie Hynde, Peter Perrett, Steve Jones, etc.
I was born in '74, so I couldn't be there for him when he had a terrible career. He was dead before I got into punk. But he's one of the lost, like Ron Asheton, or Peter Laughner. My love...
Saw the Dolls in London few years back. They were great but with Johnny gone it always feels like something big is missing................R.I.P. Johnny.
"It doesn't pay to try, all the smart boys know why. Doesn't mean I didn't try, I just never know why." Johnny pretty much just summed up my last 23 years with that lyric...RIP <3
I saw Johnny at the Lit Club in CT in '81 or '82, He was literally falling down wasted, ended up playing sitting on the edge of the stage. and STILL he was very engaging and put on a truly great show. Until he just lay down and passed out, and the band carried on without him. So sad when someone so amazing throws it all away. Happens way to often.
True story, back in '91, I was working at an art studio, with nothing to do that day, I pulled out a white t shirt and airbrushed Johnny Thunders' portrait on it, the one from the album COPY CATS with Patti on it...only it was just Johnny..looking down..looking sad. That night I went to Record Theatreand the clerk looks at me and says.."Is that Johnny Thunders on your shirt?, "Yeah" I say..then he proceeds to tell me Johnny Thunders died that day...... what are the odds? gave me a chill.....
I'm preaching to the choir, but this guy was one of the most influential guitarists who walked the Earth...bridging metal, glam, punk, and even folk. Here's a guy who played with Steve Jones, Wayne Kramer, Sid Vicious, Steve Marriot and Phil Lynott...talk about bridging genres....And no one could slide across the strings like Johnny....
One person is still trying to put their arm around memory.
