@polderwijffie I know how you feel, what a tragic way to lose a pet, ive had some great cats, great companions. the last was a stray that was out in the sub zero cold, so I took her in, very affectionate companion (gracie) - but she wouldnt eat very much, after three wks. I took her to the vet and she had almost no liver and vet said nothing to be done, she would starve and suffer so had to put her down, tore me up. I got really close to her in a very short time, I miss her to this day.

I am so sorry for the lost of your cat.You did and tried what you could do and i am sure the cat could feel yoyr love for her.

When a cat doesnot eat, the liver will become sick (i hope you'll understand my English).

At the time of the fire, we had 10 cats.

Yari and Yordi died immediatly, 3 i had to let go a few weeks later.

Now we have still 4 cats and its ok now.

But we will never fotget it.

I wish you all the best and may be...one day....another cat ?Who knows.

@polderwijffie Thanks, I appreciate that. & I really gave vet a hard time, just couldnt accept nothing to be done, she didnt look that bad - yet. But they were right, and keeping her alive for my self just to suffer a grisly death was not the right thing to do either, but hard to accept when you get attached. The only reason I dont get another is I dont want to lose another, too many streets and dogs around here, would have to be a 100% house cat and most wont like it.

@yambo59 If a kitten is never taught to go outside, it won't want to. All my cats over the years have been strictly indoors, and some of them have lived to be nearly 20 years old. They have to be spayed or neutered, but you'd do that anyway. You can do it - there's no reason to deny yourself the joy of having another cat. Swan only attack animals when breeding and the animal appears to threaten their cygnets. Here the swan probably inquisitive about the cat, same as the cat!

It is every year the same: as long as the swans donot have young ones, they begg for food near our window and they "play"with the cats.

Our cats know when the swan is defending their eggs/young ones.

@polderwijffie Just becareful sawns can be agressive we have a mamma and her babies that come every summer even though we stopped feeding them after I worked for a bird rehabilitation center and learned that feeding was very harmful. They still come by and graze on the poles the babies come and they are very friendly. it's funny the mom disciplines them by grabbing their necks and chasing them.

I live near this lake and the swans for more then 30 years.

The swans had no "babyswans", so they were not dangerous.

They come to our window for bread.

But when there are young ones, our cats would not dare to come that close.

@inkheart1198 It happened 5 years ago but it seem sometimes to me like it was yesterday. After we lost that 5 cats, we had still 5 cats. Later 2 died because of their age, 20 years. So we had 3 cats left. But.....we found 3 motherless kittens.Their mother died after the kittens were born. So then we had 5 cats and our life started to get "normal". We loved our cats so very very much. Those 3 kittens gave it back.Unfortunalaty we had to euthanise one of them, 2 months ago. So 4 cats are here.

Our colorful character tried to pounce on a wild goose in our yard--it flew off with him on its back all the way down the street--with him howling the whole way. I hope your cat is smart. If your cat didn't know to run away when the swan got angry, I am sure the swan could kill it. They can be very aggressive and have very powerful necks that they use to swipe.
