@packoftwenty Silly, silly, little boy. Be quiet. Stop embarrassing yourself. Pretending to be so righteous. Grow up. By making such immature comments you're just showing yourself up as someone who has not lived long enough to understand John Martyn. I'm affronted for you.
Thanks for uploading (though I've probably already said that before).
I love John's approach to the song here much better than all the other ones I've ever heard; wish the song itself was available somewhere without the interruptions by Phil Cunningham.
The man seemed to be so lovable. All I can do is smile when he talks. He makes me wanna cry with him.I'm 21 and I just learned about this man last month. Found him on my own. I'm sad hes passed away.
I used to see John at a folk club in Rochford Essex in the late 60's/early 70's..He always had time to talk after the gig before he caught the train back home.I have only brilliant memories of him and its sad he is no longer with us.
LOL at all the people making out the way John Martyn lived his life was somehow wonderful - if he was so happy and living his life the way HE wanted to, why did he allow himself to lose his f-ing leg because he couldn't stop smoking, and why did he drink? Because he was happy? Look at the state of him as an olderman - a phony personality, relying on drugs to try to make himself feel happy, how pathetic.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@packoftwenty And then look at his wonderful 'singing' in this video, self indulgent much? You can't even hear what he's saying. A selfish bore without the remotest understanding of what is happening in the real world. So what if his music was inspired by the troubles he'd had in his life - what about writing music inspired by the suffering of OTHERS?
@packoftwenty Who are you then big man? What have you done for us? Where can I find your tunes that 'deal with the suffering of others'? I'd love to hear them...
John's songs offer solace to innumerable people who've once been, or still are, right where he was - and have done for almost half a century. I suggest you come out from your white picket fenced garden and join us in the real world - if you can call John Martyn pathetic then you really don't have a clue.
@packoftwenty selfish. i dont think so my friend. the fact that YOUR moaning about him not singing about others makes you selfish. Having a John Martyn night......and this caps it of....." 2 o clock in the morning drunkon my own.......and an electric guitar.whingin' and givin' out"......i ve been there..........haha......and that childish laugh......aw man i miss you....just to know your at home in Kilkenny.alive and breathing.......and knowing i will see you soon.......... from watching the Old grey whisthle test re-runs as a teenager in the 90's to the the first and only nightt t i saw you in Vicar st 07. Much love
Jesus ive just spent the last few hours listening to "our John". .haha writing music at " 2 o'clock in the morning.....drunk!....been there my brother and that childish laugh. This caps it off..............."and the music says it for ya". Sadly missed my man.
John was voted (in 75) the UKs 11th best guitarist, ahead of Jeff Beck, and thats how he started..but he wrote for me some of the greatest music ever. And when I see this video now, I am convinced he was also the greatest *soul* singer to ever emerge out of the UK .
Absolutely no-one to fill his boots, the gap is far too wide.
The greatest musical loss, imo, yet a man who, despite being well known as '*the* live act to see', esp' in the 70s, took home just 30 quid after some gigs!
1 year ago today god took him away for a jamming session , know it realy is the great gig in the sky, take care up there , never forget-always remember xxxxx
One of the most beautiful voices, and soooo expressive. Soooo sad to hear that he passed away. I first heard of him in Galway, Ireland and was so attracted to his beautiful gravel voice but yet lyrics that tear ur heart apart. Feeling sooo sad tonight....and of course putting on his CDs........Angeline...soooo lovely.....
Birdstuckinchimney here`s a little decyphering(is that a word?seemed appropriate anyway).
John " I have always written from personal experience,in my case usually 2 o clock in the morning steaming (very) drunk, with a drum machine and an electric guitar,i was just greeting (crying) moaning to myself, and complaining to myself, letting everything out,OH POOR MISERABLE ME!!,it was great fun at the time ,good for ya,a cleansing of the soul"......Hope this helps you understand our accent
a current flowing between you and your beloved. That is when I undertood what a beautiful love we shared. <<You can talk those words we call love all around, but the secret is: LOVE " IS", that is why a smile, kindness, compassion make a difference, You can call that love in action. AS two people Add all the Spirit, Mind then body to the mix, I would call that divine-love, NO words needed. This is why John's music tells how he feels, saying them with out that music,
The physical is not always there, illness comes. What do you have, IF that is gone?? People think, that is it. BUT I found out that THAT love you seek 'cannot be described with mere words,' It is an energy, as you look in your beloveds eyes and (they cannot speak )illness is slowly robbing your love, the looks of caring pass between you like a lightning bolt of energy. Your body swells with an emotion so powrful you feel it overflowing. NO words, only an electricity,
Truthfulness. This is why the musician can make music. (In this ole world a VERY WISE FRIEND TOLD ME out of chaos comes change) I think this music-great shares how deep that hurt goes.) I think it is sad, he could not also open his heart with love, HE could have if WE remember "WHAT that LOVE we are supposed to spread, IS. Sadly Love is not what we are told it is. "Why don't you show me love??" The male and female ask each other? Because they do not really know.
I met John in Lauders bar in Glasgow in 1999.I was with my girlfriend, he passed by and said to us, dont ever let go of love, hold on. A few words which will stay with me forever. Sweet dreams John, god bless for all the 30yrs i've known your music. Kevin,Glasgow
You have it on the nail osummuso. You can't create heart wrenching music unless you have had your heart wrenched and vegetarian accountants don't get those experiences very often.
I love this voice and the dude too... He was a close friend to Nick Drake. If only John was still alive. Too late now to see him perform. Here in France we lost another great artisrt this year, Alain Bashung. Sad year for music.
What a bloody guy. Saw him a few times at the Town & Country club years ago, just brilliant. People come and go, but I'm not ashamed to say, upon hearing of his passing, I too wept. What a loss, both as a musician, song writer and as a human being.
Iv'e heard John talk with a Glasgow accent and an English accent too. It tells me that he was a man who wanted to 'fit in'. He wanted to be unobrtusive and accepted. Interesting. I'm an Anglo-Scot but I still talk with my Scottish accent even though I moved to England when I was four years old. There was a period when I talked one way at school and another at home but then I made a decision to be myself and from then on I spoke with a Scottish accent and fuck anyone who didn't like it.
just discovering you john even though you've been part of my parents massive music collection for decades your undoubtably my mom and dads favorite muscian, im looking forward to discovering all your great music its unfortunate i never knew how great your stuff was earlier in life, u'll be an inspiration to me for the future im sure of that, its a real shame i discoverd ur stuff after ur passing, cause ill never get to see you live. RIP JM
I agree. "Inside Out" is definitely one of his best and takes "Solid Air" that bit further. "Live at Leeds" subsequently sees the albums evolve and alter, each musician being in "the moment". Some people say he was at the top of his game then. But I saw him numerous times in the 80's and he was just fabulous. It was always a big deal going to a John Martyn gig and that hypnotised transcendental state stayed with you for ages.
I'm only sorry i came to his music as a result of him dieing. I'll never get to see him live, but maybe that's not a bad thing. There's still some fucking amazing music left in his name. And respects to Danny Thompson. I play bass and i can tell you that man lets his soul speak through those strings. Absolutley sweet. John Martyn's music will live forever in my heart regardless of all the stories and the slander. Fuck all that. He's a musician's musican. Rest easy my friend. A.
Danny Thomson summed it up - "someone who can write 'you curl around me like a fern in the spring' - that's the man that is going to be missed, not the guy who is chucking beer all over you and poking you in the chest." get over it
Humm, I think he may have had a personality problem...dare I even say that? It's really hard when an artist's endeavours really affect you in a very positive way and then you find out that they where actually quite negative in their personal lives. I'm a big John Martyn fan regarding his music - I adore it - but I think he was not a particularly nice person and that's a hard thing to admit. I think he did a good line in self pity. I've probably annoyed a lot of people now, sorry!
but he was brought up in Glasgow by his Scottish father and Grandmother, born in New Malden, Surrey though, so he spent a lot of his youth in London with his mother, hence the ever changing accent I suppose.
I should fucking slap you for that stupid statement. He wasnt born in Scotland but he was raised there and he was heavily influenced by him, being scottish isnt about where your born its about a state of mind and let me tell something you fucking moron, hes more Scottish then youll ever goddamn be.
This guy is a real angel. I also wish I had have heard about him sooner. Thats what you call soul. You have to be braindead not to hear how incredibly beautiful that is.
one word just flows-into-another....beautiful!! first heard of this guy in late 2008,just after he passed, wish i knew about him sooner...Glasgow Greg!
Nonsense. Sure, by 2007 he's rather a wreck, but for 30-odd years he was an excellent singer. Look, you can't say old blues singers, or flamenco, or Dylan, are crap singers, though they are not "good" from a certain viewpoint. But John sang sweet or rough - always from the heart. That's the main thing, and that is "wabi sabi" - beauty in simplicity/imperfection.
There is more than one side to a story. I had heard through my uncle and aunt who knew him that he was abusive and some other musicians were scared of him too. No one will say that it is ok to abuse your wife. On the other hand his music is transcendental and has had such a positive effect on my own life. People aren't wholly evil or wholly good generally. I guess we'll just have to wait for the biography.
hey bigdaddytrip FUCK YOU nobody can turn anyone into an alco maybe if annie furlong had a bit of fuckin willpower she might not have been an alco. its not johns fault she found her answer to a problem at the end of a bottle. she has her own mind to make her own decisions in life there not made for her. so fuck up slaggin the man when hes dead. get on with your own life ya sad fuck
Well, fuck you too, I guess. People do turn to alcohol as a result of stress and abuse. For you to be so enraged over my statements makes me laugh and wonder how you can call ME a sad fuck. John was an extremely talented artist; I said that...but he was an abusive ass as well. The truth is the truth, whether the person is dead or not.
this fat bastard is nothing but a drunk and his wife left him because he abused her and the children!! an asshole he is !! thank fuck he is gone !! the world is a better place without women beaters!!
You know what? fuck you, John Martyn was a truely inspirational man, and you should never make fun of the dead. it is devastating that he is gone, and he definately does not deserve that kind of treatment.
Mr. Mcnair's obituary on singer and guitarist John Martyn in the Sunday Independent 2/1/09 contains an unfortunate and untrue reference to my dead sister, Annie Furlong. Or Anne, as her family called her. She was certainly not a "fellow alcoholic" of Mr. Martyn when she met him in Dublin in 1982. She did however end up that way after seven years of marriage to him during which she endured his abuse, jealousy and constant heavy drinking.
Well, the truth is the truth. John Martyn was in incredible, talented individual who wrote truly inspirational, beautiful music; BUT, he was abusive to both his first and second wives, turning the second into an alcoholic. So to Hennerszs: It is not making fun of the dead to state the truth; he was an abusive ass. Below, I will post a reply to Michael's obit from Michael Furlong, Annie Furlong's brother.
i am sitting here wondering what to write, i suppose i agree with you, but i stand by what i initially wrote, although i am less instilled with rage / sadness.
he goes all glasgae again when he's in scotland. bit like john barrowman. forgive me...

This is why John's music tells how he feels, saying them with out that music,
nancyl2 2 years ago 4
The physical is not always there, illness comes. What do you have, IF that is gone?? People think, that is it. BUT I found out that THAT love you seek 'cannot be described with mere words,' It is an energy, as you look in your beloveds eyes and (they cannot speak )illness is slowly robbing your love, the looks of caring pass between you like a lightning bolt of energy. Your body swells with an emotion so powrful you feel it overflowing. NO words, only an electricity,
nancyl2 2 years ago
Truthfulness. This is why the musician can make music. (In this ole world a VERY WISE FRIEND TOLD ME out of chaos comes change) I think this music-great shares how deep that hurt goes.) I think it is sad, he could not also open his heart with love, HE could have if WE remember "WHAT that LOVE we are supposed to spread, IS. Sadly Love is not what we are told it is. "Why don't you show me love??" The male and female ask each other? Because they do not really know.

It happens.
It was part of the man.
Freidrich Nietschke once said; "There can be no art without intoxication"
Through history, many of the greats have had some form of addiction; Hendrix, Van Gogh etc.
I met John Martyn many times and loved the man, which includes everything. The talent and the addiction.
Heart of the Blues!

JSWren 2 years ago
I recommend "Inside out "to you. You'll never look bach!

Crap singer fantastic guitarist .
DannyFischarge1 2 years ago
PeterOzanne 2 years ago 3
Indeed.
Great singer.

Silly person.

You know what? fuck you, John Martyn was a truely inspirational man, and you should never make fun of the dead. it is devastating that he is gone, and he definately does not deserve that kind of treatment.
Hennerszs 2 years ago
From Michael Furlong, Annie Furlong's brother:
She did however end up that way after seven years of marriage to him during which she endured his abuse, jealousy and constant heavy drinking.
bigdaddytrip 2 years ago
Well, the truth is the truth. John Martyn was in incredible, talented individual who wrote truly inspirational, beautiful music; BUT, he was abusive to both his first and second wives, turning the second into an alcoholic. So to Hennerszs: It is not making fun of the dead to state the truth; he was an abusive ass. Below, I will post a reply to Michael's obit from Michael Furlong, Annie Furlong's brother.
