  • hahah facepalm!!!

  • ok... ok... but seriously you really don't use there face it's there chin its more affective and wont break there nose

  • Yes, you are correct sir in saying that. The way I connect to my uke might superficially look different than what you are doing in the BAA but it is really the same connection. I am connecting with concave his chin with the lower meaty part of my hand. At no time does my hand touch the rest of his face/nose with any pressure - ever. This is the exact connection Tomiki sensei demonstrates in film /photos.

Trust me, when fat Americans collide noses get broke unless we have good technique.

  • The first contact should off-balance the uke, and then on the recovery step the second contact catches the chin, not the face, that is what controls the the balance of the uke by creating a spinal lock. You will not always be able to steal energy, because every attack may have a different timing, and every opponent may have a different stride length and speed. Pushing with unbendable arm IS critical to weight loading. Shomen ate on the street happens much differently than it does in the dojo.

  • great video. thanks.

  • Hi

I am just starting out on Aikido. I found that very useful and exciting to watch. Thank you for posting.

  • as someone said this is an incomplete technique ? they are wrong i want to say it again this is an exercise that can be used as a move . And this is a very very beutifull exercise and example of child or young developement of important principles of ayumi ashi and tsuki ashi, also extended ki , entering into the center with timing and ma-ai. it is beutifull.

  • the other exercise of gykuhamni shomen ate in aikido is translated to tenchi nage.. heaven and earth throw.. where there is no emphesize on actually pushing the shomen but to entering beyond the uke.. it is almost purely aiki.

  • the other is ura and omote style. While aikibudo is very peacefull the aikido is even more connected and even more peacefull towards the uke. We ocassionally have atemi strikes to distract but i still use the hand so i dont learn bad habits of striking someone by mistake.

  • Thanks for the comments and for watching

  • Another classical accent of this exercise or maybe the next steps of it that i could mention is Iriminage.. entering throw . While insted of extending one arms into the ukes center , one lets uke come into ones own center and then does same movement, very very simliar. If readers get interested yous hould find these in youtube.

  • the pushing method is not final.. it is just exercise to teach to how to enter. Of course you will never find any technique that cannot be reversed , it all depends on situation and the aikidoka.

  • Yes I agree. However I become increasingly aware of kaeshi Waza, the alternating roles of Uke and Tori in a randori situation. I beleive the less an Aikidoka attacks...the more Aikido he can do. Just my opinion. I got 40 more ears to prove it right. (hopefully)

  • in aikido maybe not so in aikibudo..or aikino michi.. in aikido if you become good i believe the limits of atack and deffence will be blurred and melt into one. However , personall view i look down on any form of destruction.. if i ever become a master in my classes atemi and iblows hould be replaced with hand movements suc as these.

  • in aikido it typically would be iriminage instead of push of face..however its all compatible

btw its not clasiccal its classic period.

  • This is Aikido. Tomiki Aikido. This is the first technique of the Junana Hon Kata. While I appreciate other Aikidoka perspective, this is an important move to our system. While pushing anywhere on the body would work...the technique name is Shomen Ate. That means a strike to the face.

classical...classic period...whatever. How about the most common method I have seen coming from the history of my lineage.

    thanks for the comments.

  • i had in impression that this was aikibudo or aiki no michi. these were the forms before ueshiba developed it futher into aikido. Perhaps your system is more like the old ones.

yes shomen ate strike to the head , while this movment probably would have been a palm strike or fist .. its nature is connected to tenchi nage or sumiotoshi.. same happens in sumiotoshi atack in ordinary aikido then one presses down on the arm at the point of fall. emphasizes on outo f center. while here its in center.

  • @SenseiStrange Shomen Ate means "frontal strike" Shomen means front not the face. We bow to the Shomen- front of the training hall, not the face. I too trained in Tomiki ryu and know the Junana hon Kata, when we learned shomen ate it was put your hand under the chin and raise it so uke was looking to the ceiling and his back is arched and spine is locked so he can't back away as you throw. The version you perform allows uke to back out.

  • @caaikiman1 - yeah we do it a bunch of ways. This is an old video documenting my progression. Hopefully I have gotten better, Thanks for the feedback.

  • On the "Taking back the initiative late time" portion, it looks like Mike steps right and then pushes left. I'm curious to see how this feels.
