please I have a question... I love the 50mm 1.4, but I've read many reviews abou it and many of them said that its autofox had broken (didn't work) after a few days, and they had to fix it, so I got scared, can you tell me if there is any problem, or just it's good enough to spend about 400$.
I agree with alexbrysonmiley. Canon, Nikon, and Sony all make a 50mm 1.8, which is a third the price. They cost around $150 new at Adorama. I have the Nikon, and it is an awesome lens. It's best between 2.8 and 8f. The image quality is superb. I wouldn't spend that much money on a 1.4 unless you really needed it. Otherwise go with the 1.8. they focus fast, and also work excellent with tubes if you shoot macro.
@alexbrysonmiley the 50 f1.4 is an excellent lens but its around 350-400. if u are on a budget there is the 1.8 which is around 100 and it is a pretty good lens. if money isn't an issue then i would go for the 1.4
I shoot Nikon 50mm f1.4G, Nikon 85mm f1.4D & Tokina 100mm f2.8 for my portraits. I have to say that these lenses are so sharp that it can simulate a 3D pop of my image. The bokeh is so creamy that it really separates your subject from the background. I really love these lenses and it will surely stay in my camera bag for life!!:-))
It's really good to see Sony in this lineup. Far too many reviewers just focus on Nikon and Canon in their comparision and dismiss the Sony gear. I have both a Nikon d3s and a Sony a700 and to be honest I've grown to love my Sony more than the Nikon. Strange but true. Thanks again
@danapointtrainer I know you didnt ask ME directly, but Sigma makes inferior products to Canon and Zeiss (for Canon cameras) and the Nikon versions are basically the same quality as the Canon.
Sigma is no where near as sharp as Canon's L lenses, even the standard 1.4 USM Canon beats the Sigma.
I have noticed that Sigma is consistenly dull comparted to Canon and Zeiss. Apart from sharpness, the Sigma brand is alright, if you're alright with the lower standard.
@dannycurtean even if DXOmark rated Sigma's 85mm f1.4 just as high as the top contenders? I mean... they do a lot testing, I would think they are pretty reputable (vs just people's opinions).
@danapointtrainer I'm not referring to this lens specifically, but the brand overall. I would love Sigma to change my mind but its just how I see the relationship between OEM and Sigma.
@danapointtrainer again, you know how I feel about the brand...Canon's offering is considered one of the best lenses ever made. That's loud and clear for me. YMMV
@dannycurtean I couldn't care less about how you feel with Sigmas in general, it doesn't answer my ORIGINAL question. I'm NOT a Sigma fanboy by any means, but when I asked the video poster a question and you want to butt in, that's fine, but you didn't or can't answer my question. When a site like DXOmark.com that does tests ALL day long ranks the lens in question highly vs the top contenders, I want to hear it from others that actually have hands on experience on all the lenses.
Canon 85mm F/1.8, or Canon 50mm F/1.4? Which should I buy? I've been told by various sources that for roughly less than 10 dollars more I could buy the 85mm, and with the larger focal length it'd be worth it? I still am in the process of deciding, and doing my fair share of research. Which would you recommend ?
85 has better build quality. For crop, I'd go with the 50. For a full frame, I'd go with the 85. 85 on a crop is around 135 so if you like that focal length go for it.
Does a 50mm on a crop frame sensor provide the same benefits as an 85mm on a full frame or do you only get the desired compression, etc by using the 85mm and the sensor type is not directly related?
@dschagun I think the background blur is less effective on crop frame, i.e., a 50/1.4 won't look like a 75 or 80mm f/1.4 on a crop sensor, it's more like a 75/2 or 80/2.
The lens still gathers the same amount of light, but DoF increases as you crop down the sensor, so it's very hard to get background blur from a little point and shoot.
Try it on the Depth of Field Calculator (google it).
OH my goodness! I don't think that you should do these types of videos because there will be a lot of lens bashing that will occur on the youtube comment threads. ie. Canon 85mm f1.8 vs Canon 85mm f1.2L II, Nikon 85mm f1.8 vs 85mm f1.4.
I personally believe that all of these portrait lenses are great, it is more about the look, concept and feel to your photos that will set you apart from the rest.

I want to get Canon 135 f/2 I think its better than 85mm f/1.2 for lot less money
If you are on budget get Sigma 150mm f/2.8 Macro lens. You can shoot portraits with it too.
