  • hahahahaha. regina and i would be awesome friends. she's so funny.

  • It's official... I'm gay for Regina Spektor.

  • omg i never got that.

  • a three year old could write this

  • @MrBahhh31 Maybe on the surface.

  • fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck ya i fuck with that soap foo

  • bestt regina spektor song.

  • i love this song!!!!

  • The song is about whatever you feel it is about. YES it is random. A random happy song with very morbid innuendo.Like Happy phantom by tori amos. When i listen, i hear someone on the verge of a breakdown trying to find a meaning in life but longing to die. You may hear something entirely different.

  • For some reason this song reminds me of anime in general. I have no idea why, don't ask.

  • I... love this song

  • This song saved my life

  • Not gonna lie, this song kinda scared me but I couldn't stop listening to it. Idk if I like it or not...

  • It's not about suicide. It's about escaping the monotony of life.

  • Guys, Regina herself has said that she doesn't know what her own songs mean sometimes. Stop claiming your interpretation as fact. It might just be a silly, random song. Maybe that's what she was going for. But, of course, it might have a subliminal meaning. But you DON'T KNOW THAT. Stop assuming you do. Everyone can have their own interpretation, but stop thinking that yours is the only correct one. Geez...

  • Regina has a lot of talent. She can make this song sound chipper and random, when really it's depressing and about suicide.

  • Well, I always wondered why the lyrics were talking about swallowing soup, but I never really thought further into it because this is Regina Spektor after all.

Anyhoo, I still love this song.

  • this song actually gives me a smile:)

  • Most cheerful suicide song ever (besides Sad Song by Psapp).

  • How does she do so much with her voice?

  • wow, all you guys sound so clever because you can actually understand words that people say, of course this song isn't a about a music box, i think we all figured that out. it doesn't need repeating loads.. we get the point.

  • The thing thats wonderful about Regina Spektor songs is you can interpret her songs in a million different ways, whether its simple or deep, which is exactly what Regina has said she wants!

To me, I interpret this song as the monotony of life and, when you try to stand outside of the cliches and be independent and crazy, life kicks you in the butt and makes it hard to stand out. Its basically trying to escape the boring repetitiveness of the music box, or boring monotonous life.

  • I really love this.

  • @danceergiirl I will not bash your opinion for it is your right, but you, my love have TERRIBLE taste in music if you think for one second that Rebecca's garbage compares at all to this masterpiece. You see, Regina has a real voice. She doesn't use shitty machines like Rebecca does to make her voice sound "decent" (not that I am calling Rebecca's horrid voice bearable in any way, shape or form). Regina is a genius, remarkable indeed. Don't ever compare her to modern music, she is perfection.

  • @danceergiirl Them's fightin' words.

Your taste in music is the only thing pathetic here.

  • "It tastes like soap, but it doesn't really taste like soap." My thoughts exactly.

  • Regina is the only person to make washing dishes sexy.. ;D

  • epic an hero

  • sope dose not taste that bad

  • drowning yourself in dish water... that's super depressing.

  • It's not actually about washing the dishes literally.. ive read other posts that gives a real philosophical meaning about it.. i forgot the philosopher though..

  • JAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA LOVE SO MUCH

  • this song is so random

  • i love youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!!!1

  • I think I like this song :] Haha

  • this is a very short song for regina.... when it stopped i thought it was buffering O.o

  • I'm not sure people realize - one interpretation is the contemplation of suicide as an escape from society.

  • On the outside it sounds like a silly/random song, but it's actually about suicide if you listen closely. The music box is the monotony of life and everyone wants to get out. When she says "I lower in my whole mouth and take a gulp, and start to..." it sounds like she's gonna say "choke," but instead she says "feel mortality surround me." (dying) Then at the "mechanism" and "completely" she makes those choking sounds. It's brilliant but depressing.

  • @aliceallyalice OMG you're right!

  • @aliceallyalice If you notice, that's how all her songs tend to be. Light, a little bubbly, but with something a little darker lurking below the surface. Some prime examples are Eet, The Genius Next Door, and the Dance Anthem of The 80's. Eet is about slowly forgetting the things that are most important to you, The Genius Next Door Is about a misunderstood college student drowning in a lake. The Dance Anthem of the 80's speaks for itself (Go listen to it. NOW).

  • Comment removed

  • after listening to dance theme of the 80s 80 000 times i still don't know the meaning. please share?

  • @PurpleColourTV

    (1/2)

Regina's songs are known to be difficult to interpret since most of them are slightly entrenched in philosophical context. I think the music box represents our current way of life and our society, instigated by capitalism. The mallets hit the gears are always turning. Moreover, I may have been the only one to notice this, but in this song her Russian accent is very apparent, which may have been on purpose.

  • @melvinhendrikse thanks!

  • (2/2)

Since people are always so discontent with their capitalist way of life, they are always trying to find some way out. But when they try to make an escape they overindulge and squander yet again. Peope try to escape, but because of their very nature they always end up in the exact same mechanism: yearning to get out.

  • @aliceallyalice or maybe you're just complicating things and it is just a random song LOL

  • @aliceallyalice Because of you, this is my new favorite song by Regina Spektor. :)

  • @aliceallyalice Thanks, ruined my favorite song. Gives me the chills now.

  • @AcapellaAnni Don't believe aliceallyalice... it isn't really all that literal. It IS about getting out of the mundane, but she shows us how to in her wonderful escape while doing the dishes. It IS an escapade, a very playful part of the song, and it's a stretch to call it suicidal. She also very emphatically says GULP.

The part about mortality? It's the way reality checks usually happen. We let ourselves go, play around, even think for a bit that we've found ourselves.. then reality sets in.

  • I just can't help but smile when listening this! :D

  • after she said she "took a big gulp" I thought she was going to say "and then I began to choke".

  • and its the greates voyage of plasticcccKKK! <3

and staaaart to feel... Mortality!!! :0

  • She is too adorable for wordss

  • it tastes like soap but it doesnt really taste like soap

and then i lower in my hole mouth in and take a gulp

    and start to…

    choke.

because that's just kinda icky. haha but this is such a fun song. ^_^

  • I have loved this song for years! It makes me so happy every time I listen to this song!

  • "and its the greatest voyage in the history of plastic!!" bahaha so cute and the childlike innocence is simply amazing

  • lolooololololololololo

  • MY THEME SONG! haha

  • I think the first part about the musicbox, is everything going the same way, and everyone sings the same song and do everything the same way, but they all want to do things differently then they usually do. And the thing about the dishes.... There I have no freaking idea, but I still like it :D

  • @OwlWithNoTree here's what I think - the music box is supposed to represent the monotony of living life the way we're supposed to. no one wants to be bored, always doing the same thing. then she starts talking about the dishes - doing the dishes is a very monotonous, everyday task that everyone does the SAME way - and she BREAKS that monotony by playing around with the water - the song is a story of how ART adds color to our lives. if any of what I just said makes sense to anyone, please like XD

  • @megacrazy04 you just blew my mind...thank you <d

  • Another new favorite artist :3

  • I honestly don't know what to think about this song, I really don't, but that's not stopping me from singing along either

  • this made my day so much better

  • Now I know what she does when she's bored.

  • i like regina spektor but i dont like this song...

  • @zntostairtv yeah i like her too but i don't appreciate this song i always stop at "i want to sing another melody" i love her song on the radio don't you?

  • @noisette91 omg i LOVE the song on the radio xD

  • @zntostairtv ^_^

  • And it's the greatest voyage in the history of plastic!

  • I was like, "this is all right..." but then she said "but when I do the dishes...." and I lost it. CAN'T STOP LAUGHING

  • I've always wanted to be Regina Spektor, oh the great.

But no, I'm too Americana for that.

  • @reginalouise24 ha... im too latina for that. but im pailer than her. still i could never pass:)

  • She is my favorite person ever. She has an infinite amount of cool points...

  • ...wow.

  • Brilliant Lyrics... Good stuff........... Synergy

  • shes my favorite! this song is random which makes me like it better!

  • feel in an operatic movie :)

  • I started laughing out loud at this song.

  • @Tippertot i started laughing too!!! haha

  • The brilliance in her writing is only rivaled by the brilliance of her talent.

  • click 3 and the 8 soo funny thumbs up so every one sees

  • Wat the hell ! This song is soo weird nd random!! LOL

  • I want a music box with this song on it!

  • This song, just made my day... (:

  • she has such amazing voice control!

  • What does "malots" mean?

  • This is my dish washing theme song.

  • @shandalalala

haha! this song goes through my head when i'm doing dishes too... but i never taste the soap.

    well, ok... almost never ;)

  • @shandalalala This is also my Dishwashing song. Its also my sisters Favorite song that I sing. And yes I have tasted the bubbles!

  • @shandalalala I'm actually doing dishes right now. Weird.

  • Regina and Adele maybe alike in awesomeness, but not in sound ;P

  • Regina doesn't sounds like Adele, Adele sounds like Regina

  • <3<3

  • best song about soviet communism ever

  • BEST SONG EVER:):):)

  • So I sing another melody, one different from the one I always sing, BUT when I do the dishes....

    BEST SONG EVER!!!!

  • lol sounds like Adele a little bit :D

  • @BBoySwaggaProduction No, she doesn't, but if she did, the correct phrasing should be "Adele sounds like Regina", since Regina is superior.

  • @keibranch true, adele has nothing on regina. regina is WAAAY more unique- LOVELY.

  • To me, it is about people continuously going through the motions. People who are getting super sick of it, though. It's a beautiful thought, really. This girl is freaking talented.

  • This sounds to me as if she's singing about the people who are trapped in the same routines day after day, and are secretly wanting to quit their jobs or something, but on the surface carry on cheerfully with those hated routines.

  • this song should be called random

  • awesome song

  • so random...... talking about a music box.... and then doing the dishes???? I think i might have found my new fav artist!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @moonpearl1a It's not random. The song parallels tradition, conformist societal expectations (the music box) with the only expression of creativity the narrator can make: her childish suicide (which she commits while performing a traditional role--washing the dishes).

  • Perhaps the story of a housewife who had higher aspirations, stuck in the monotony of a doldrum life.

Time for me to go do the dishes..sigh...

  • @SunshineLoliepop That isn't very fair. If Moon finds the song random, they find the song random. Your analysis of the song does not particularly mean that it is someone else's.

  • @TheAddicat Someone's Opinion =/= Artistic Thesis.

  • @SunshineLoliepop My point exactly.

  • @moonpearl1a I see no randomness at all. Once you come to understand the meaning behind the song.

  • this song makes me feel better when im sad...

You skipped 3 and 8 so there's still ten facts.

Stop spamming till you get smarter.

    Song is fantastic.

  • @janjanjul The song is beautiful and I love it and I only posted that comment because i needed a laugh and a good day. I wish you a great life and that you will stop calling me a dumpo kind sir or madam.

  • @martianchick123 Glad to hear that we're united on that front. I hope you had a laugh and a good day. It just seemed like trolling to me. What with the copy pasting and the lack of relevance to the song (as in an actual comment). I will refrain from further calling you a dumpo, kind sir or madam.
