I thought Eurovision was for European performers, How come it included entry's from Australia (olivia Newton-John) & another entry from Israel Neither country is a European nation.
@4thstooge Some countries don't have a residency requirement for the performers of the songs. So you will find that Celine Dion(a Canadian) is able to perform for Switzerland.
Obviously the two titans of this year are ABBA and Gigliola - rightly in the top two slots (though I myself would still put "Si" ahead of "Waterloo". But the song that really does it for me is the Yugoslav song. I mean, obviously you have to shut your eyes so you don't see the outfits, but otherwise it's great. The same is true for the Netherlands. Elsewhere, Finland and Norway did very badly with quite nice songs, and Ireen Sheer didn't even attempt the accent.
Thank you for this summary! I saw a part of it LIVE in 1974, but missed ABBA waiting on Björn, Benny, Anna & Frida. I did not know that they now was called ABBA! I recorded by microphone a lot and went away without Waterloo!
Therefore the order of the songs in this video cannot be correct as far as I remember!
The swedish band is ABBA (in 1973 they was called "Björn, Benny, Anna/Agnetha & Frida"). They released every year one album from 1973 until 1981 (as far as I remember).
And here is my German vote: 1 to Germany (Monaco if own country is forbidden) 2 to Greece 3 to Ireland 4 to Norway 5 to Israel 6 to Belgium 7 to Luxembourg 8 to Sweden 10 to United Kingdom 12 to Italy (sorry, ABBA)
I know that the voting is over, but here are the Brazilian votes, anyway: 1p: Spain 2p: Finland 3p: Norway 4p: Luxembourg 5p: Greece 6p: Ireland 7p: UK 8p: Netherlands 10p: Italy 12p: Sweden
Of course it's silly. The plain bounciness of the tune and the happy-go-lucky lyrics?; of course it's silly, though I suppose 'cute' could be a better word.
The most classic and well-known moment in ESC history was a sure winner in our poll, although Abba did face tougher-than-expected competition in the form of the fabulous Gigliola Cinquetti. In the end, though, the great Swedish foursome comfortably came out on top (and Greece debuted in our polls with a quite respectable 9th place).
That's it, folks - voting's closed! Here are the final, official results of the 1974 vote - the top-10... 1) Sweden 327 2) Italy 311 3) UK 202 4) Netherlands 184 5) Luxembourg 154 6) Monaco 129 7) Belgium 128 8) Norway 117 9) Greece 99 10) Israel 94
How can any of you vote for anything else than sweden, Waterloo is the greatest eurovision song ever and there has never been and never will be a greater moment in the history of the eurovision song contest than when abba won in Brighton
Yes, I truly agree with you, but I'll also answer your question with another one: how can anyone not be moved by such a beautiful song as Italy's "Si"?

SundownerDrifting's vote has helped Yugoslavia's Korni rise from 9th to 6th and Israel return to the top-10, while Abba are now more than 20 points ahead from the rest. My votes: 1 point: Switzerland 2 points: Belgium 3 points: United Kingdom 4 points: Israel 5 points: Netherlands 6 points: Italy 7 points: Finland (shame on you people for not noticing the beauty of this tune!) 8 points: Norway 10 points: Yugoslavia and sorry to be so predictable but... 12 points for Sweden!
Well, it seems your 12 is the only thing that's predictable here! :-Þ I mean, a higher scoring to Norway than to Italy? For shame! (just kidding, of course)
Well, it was again really tough for me, as my top 5 are all really great tunes! Putting them in some sort of order was not easy! The rest...meh! "Long Live Love" was a pretty awful song, but I love Olivia even more than Lulu, so it stays.
Oh, yes, I'd forgotten you gave her your top marks! (sigh) Oh, well, I guess you see sth in this entry that I've yet to see (however, her song with the Bendik Singers the previous year was indeed great, and I like her '76 entry - such kitchy fun!)
Thanks to the latest voting by noam83 (thank you!), Belgium climbs from 10th to 6th! The latest top-10: 1 Sweden 83 2 Italy 67 3 Netherlands 42 4 UK 38 5 Luxembourg 37 6) Belgium 25 =7) Norway 23 =7) Switzerland 23 9) Yugoslavia 22 10) Greece 18 Last place: Finland, with 7 points ...And now you can watch the whole contest (well, almost) in my playlists!
The 12 points by ESCsince1968 help Norway rocket into the top-10 for the first time! The latest results: 1) Sweden 71 2) Italy 57 3) Netherlands 42 4) UK 38 5) Luxembourg 37 6) Yugoslavia 22 7) Norway 20 8) Switzerland 19 9) Greece 18 10) Belgium 17
Here goes my Top Ten: Switzerland 1 pt Greece 2 pts Germany 3 Yugoslavia 4 (has grown on me with time) UK 5 Ireland 6 Sweden 7 Netherlands 8 Italy 10 Norway 12
I have to admit that back in 1974 rocky songs like Waterloo just didn't do it for me, not the greatest ESC song, nor from ABBA. 'Si' is one of those haunting ballads that I love, but!, The First Day of Lovely is one of those really happy, cheerful, sing-along songs that remains so for me to this day.
My, it must have been truly something to witness at first hand not just the most famous (and arguably the most important) moment in ESC history, but also the beginning of a career that really left its mark on pop music in general! (other than that, though, I guess that, had I been there back in '74, I would have rooted for Italy too)
No major changes at the top end of the scoreboard, where Sweden has started to gain a considerable lead (as I've said about the '87 voting, I guess you can't argue with a classic), although the Dutch climb to 4th place and the Swiss rise from a joint 8th to a joint 6th place. The latest top-10: 1) Sweden 64 2) Italy 47 3) Luxembourg 37 4) Netherlands 34 5) UK 33 =6) Switzerland 18 =6) Yugoslavia 18 8) Belgium 17 (back in the top-10) 9) Greece 16 10) Israel 15
Well, to be honest, I read "Ireland" myself when I checked out his votes, so I didn't notice it. But I guess that, yes, that's what he meant anyway...
Eurovision's most famous ever group maintain their lead, while Switzerland and Spain break in for the first time. The latest top-10: 1) Sweden 52 2) Italy 41 3) Luxembourg 30 4) UK 25 5) Netherlands 24 6) Yugoslavia 18 7) Greece 16 =8) Israel 15 =8) Switzerland 15 10) Spain 14 Last place: Portugal, with 2 points
My Top 10: (Without Norway) 1 point: Netherland 2 : Greece 3 : Yugoslavia 4 : Italy 5 : Finland 6 : Luxembourg 7 : United Kingdom 8 : Switzerland 10 : Spain And 12 points to : Sweden ( A VERY worthy winner )
1974 was the year when Sweden and Italy were both in truly amazing form, making it indeed very difficult to choose among them - and this is also reflected in the latest top-10: 1) Sweden 40 2) Italy 37 3) Luxembourg 24 4) Netherlands 23 5) UK 18 =6) Israel 15 =6) Yugoslavia 15 8) Greece 14 9) Belgium 12 10) Monaco 7 Still with nul points: Finland
What a dilemma for the Eurovision having Abba and the great Italian entry Si in the same contest. Personnally, I wanted the Italian song to win as it was/is just beautiful and something I could listen to over and over. It was actually quite an original song for that era with its beautiful orchestration and questioning lyrics.
Here are the top 10 with everyone voting here: 1.Sweden 30[An ok lead] 2.Italy 25[A lovely song] 3.Netherlands 23[Not far beahind] 4.Luxembourg 20[One of my favourites] 5.Israel 15[A nice song] 6.Belgium,Yugoslavia,Greece 12[A tie but I perfer Greece] 7.United Kingdom 10[Should get more points] 8.Norway 6[I never really liked Norways songs] 9.Spain,Germany 4[A tie but I perfer Spain] 10.Portugal 2[I wouldnt expect this to win]
Here are the Patricks vote: 1.Italy 2.Yugoslavia 3.Spain 4.United Kingdom 5.Israel 6.Belgium 7.Netherlands 8.Sweden 10.Luxembourg And finally 12.Greece
A year tha produced both Abba and Gigliola Cinquetti's "Si" couldn't, of course, be called anything but strong. Here's my top-10: 1 point: Spain 2: Portugal 3: Luxembourg 4: Belgium 5: Yugoslavia 6: UK 7: Israel 8: Netherlands and 12 points to... BOTH Sweden & Italy (hey, the ESC's had a winning tie; I'm entitled to one too!)
Well, yes you may have a tie with the too songs, I know it´s difficult to choose from them. Well here is my top 10 (No tie for me :) 1 point to Monaco 2 Belgium 3 Israel 4 Germany 5 Yugoslavia 6 Norway 7 Luxembourg 8 Netherlands My 10 pointer go to...Sweden And I give 12 points to Italy, Simply because when i Listen to "Si" I just get shivers through my body, such a beautiful song.
Yes, I know! It's the same over here; I mean, "Si" is such an amazingly beautiful song, it's definitely one of my all-time ESC favorites. It's just that I can't quite bring myself to relegate Abba's entry - a milestone for ESC and pop music in general - to 2nd place.
I know it's ages since this poll ended but I'll say it anyway. I'm a little surprised about your high marks to the UK; I've always thought "Long live love" sounds more like a nursery rhyme. I hear that Olivia Newton-John was not happy when that won the UK NF as she wanted to sing something else.
Well, I realise it's a silly song, but I kinda like it anyway - perhaps mainly because of Olivia who, whether she liked it or not, manages to really sell it. But yes, maybe it was still too much, since had I voted today, I would likely have given these 6p to, say, Portugal or Yugoslavia. But, anyway, had it not been for Gigliola and Abba, 1974 would've been kind of a "meh" year, one when I actually struggled a bit to complete a top-10 - in fact, my choices for 1-8p are quite interchangeable.
She does sell the song to the best of her abilities, but the main problem with the song is it's not really a very "Olivia" song, just a kind of generic Eurovision-type tune. I really would have preferred if she sang a song that played more to her strengths. (NF fan favorite "Angel Eyes" would have been a good choice, something written by longtime collaborator John Farrar would have been better.)
I agree, "Angel Eyes" would have been a far better choice. I understand your trouble filling out your top-10 apart from Gigliola and ABBA, two undeniable stand-outs in this year. It's an interesting enigma, though; should 1974 be considered strong for having those two, or sub-par for an otherwise lack of memorable songs?
I recall this contest well,as France did not appear due to the death a few days earlier of President Pompidu and this was Katie boyle's 4th and final hostess of the contest.
Those guys in the flashy suits around the 03:00 minute mark should have won instead of Abba, look at the heads on them, especially the guitarist with the handlebar moustache in the background, you have to give props for that shit right there, you can't call yourself a real man til you've grown a tache like that.
I thought Eurovision was for European performers, How come it included entry's from Australia (olivia Newton-John) & another entry from Israel Neither country is a European nation.

A good winner of course ( they were the

rightful one : " Si " was a more beautiful
and a better song. Italy deserved the victory in 1974

Well, it seems your 12 is the only thing that's predictable here! :-Þ I mean, a higher scoring to Norway than to Italy? For shame! (just kidding, of course)
tasosk3 4 years ago
Well, it was again really tough for me, as my top 5 are all really great tunes! Putting them in some sort of order was not easy! The rest...meh! "Long Live Love" was a pretty awful song, but I love Olivia even more than Lulu, so it stays.
SundownerDrifting 4 years ago
Ahem! He wasn't the only one. Long live Anne Karie Strom! an esc great!
ESCsince1968 4 years ago
Oh, yes, I'd forgotten you gave her your top marks! (sigh) Oh, well, I guess you see sth in this entry that I've yet to see (however, her song with the Bendik Singers the previous year was indeed great, and I like her '76 entry - such kitchy fun!)
tasosk3 4 years ago
"sigh" How could you even think that about the great Ms. Strom (Hee Hee Hee!!!). She is an esc goddess, for both individual songs

ESCsince1968 4 years ago
My, it must have been truly something to witness at first hand not just the most famous (and arguably the most important) moment in ESC history, but also the beginning of a career that really left its mark on pop music in general! (other than that, though, I guess that, had I been there back in '74, I would have rooted for Italy too)

ESCsince1968 4 years ago
Well, to be honest, I read "Ireland" myself when I checked out his votes, so I didn't notice it. But I guess that, yes, that's what he meant anyway...

Yes, I know! It's the same over here; I mean, "Si" is such an amazingly beautiful song, it's definitely one of my all-time ESC favorites. It's just that I can't quite bring myself to relegate Abba's entry - a milestone for ESC and pop music in general - to 2nd place.
tasosk3 4 years ago
I know it's ages since this poll ended but I'll say it anyway. I'm a little surprised about your high marks to the UK; I've always thought "Long live love" sounds more like a nursery rhyme. I hear that Olivia Newton-John was not happy when that won the UK NF as she wanted to sing something else.
setheurovision94 3 years ago
Well, I realise it's a silly song, but I kinda like it anyway - perhaps mainly because of Olivia who, whether she liked it or not, manages to really sell it. But yes, maybe it was still too much, since had I voted today, I would likely have given these 6p to, say, Portugal or Yugoslavia. But, anyway, had it not been for Gigliola and Abba, 1974 would've been kind of a "meh" year, one when I actually struggled a bit to complete a top-10 - in fact, my choices for 1-8p are quite interchangeable.
tasosk3 3 years ago
She does sell the song to the best of her abilities, but the main problem with the song is it's not really a very "Olivia" song, just a kind of generic Eurovision-type tune. I really would have preferred if she sang a song that played more to her strengths. (NF fan favorite "Angel Eyes" would have been a good choice, something written by longtime collaborator John Farrar would have been better.)
SundownerDrifting 3 years ago
I agree, "Angel Eyes" would have been a far better choice. I understand your trouble filling out your top-10 apart from Gigliola and ABBA, two undeniable stand-outs in this year. It's an interesting enigma, though; should 1974 be considered strong for having those two, or sub-par for an otherwise lack of memorable songs?
setheurovision94 3 years ago
I recall this contest well,as France did not appear due to the death a few days earlier of President Pompidu and this was Katie boyle's 4th and final hostess of the contest.
scorpiofootiemad 4 years ago
Those guys in the flashy suits around the 03:00 minute mark should have won instead of Abba, look at the heads on them, especially the guitarist with the handlebar moustache in the background, you have to give props for that shit right there, you can't call yourself a real man til you've grown a tache like that.
