  • uh... What am i watching?

  • Tom and Jerry is BORING to my crowd. If I want surreal cartoons, I'll look at betty boop. This was made by Van Beuren, an animation studio I'm not fond of.

  • I just found out that the song that plays from 0:33 to 2:03 is called "Rag doll". Cool, huh?

  • The girl look like dee- dee from dexter's lab, the strong hero looks like Fred from Scooby Doo, and the Ugly evil guy looks like Waluigi from the Mario series.

  • @ptrlaurent I'm pretty sure ren and stimpey came out in 1991...it's old. But not old as the classic cartoons like these.

  • is it just me or are these old cartoons somehow twisted?

  • It's true as somebody else here said there is nothing like this anymore and it's such a pity.

  • God this is such a disney rip off lol.

  • @BrainDeadIntellect No, it was before most (or a lot) of Disney. All the different animators (and there were several) looked at and were influenced by each other in the 20s and 30s. Disney did not invent it all by himself by any means, even if he drew ahead and perfected much of it by 1940.

  • wow 2:28, Saxophobia :)

  • I always love how the Van Beurens and the Fleischer Brothers could play with the whole medium of animation like this, you just really don't see anything like it anymore. Sad really :(

  • @cha5

Actually charles5 im not 100 percent sure but it think the van beuren studios was right near to the fleischer studios. I once read that it was over the road but im not 100 percent sure.

  • Scary @3:05 :-\

  • wow! Thats was an OLE skool cartoon!! and brilliant it was too!

  • Kinda cool, and a bit haunting. The old days of cartooning.

  • strange that fred quimby stole these names years later for a cat and mouse! how did he get away with it!

  • @jamierourketen

isnt it becuse they changed their names to Dick & larry?

  • bellissimo

  • was that popeye the sailor man there omg

  • Did you know that before Van Beuren's Tom and Jerry, there were a pair of puppets who were a monkey and a mule that had the exact same name as these guys and the cat and mouse team that we know today.

  • There's just something about singing fruit that rubs me the wrong way. I do, however, like the fact that the bad guy smacks the gay dude's ass and then laughs evilly about it. A++ cartoon!

  • The voice of the woman who appears at the 4 minute mark (the one that was the tomato) sounds very much like the voice of Olive Oil in the Popeye shorts. Is this a correct guess?

  • yes its the voice of betty boop & olive oyl

    Margie hines :)

  • tottaly unpredictable, excellent!!! brilliant!!

  • Yes, we have no bananas!

  • holy shit.... I remember that comercial from a million years ago...

  • good

  • oh Bonnie poe does the womans voice again

  • oops wrong... i was gonna say margie hines

but it sounds more like little ann little

  • Gene Rodemich was the "Carl Stalling" of the Van Beuren studio, 'woofer', from 1930 through 1933. He had a knack for adapting popular music and mixing and arranging them with his own "cues", as did Stalling!

  • i think its physically impossible to bend the way he did when the bad guy was about to fall of the cliff and then somehow stayed on.

  • Err...why is the short one wearin Micky Mouse's costume?? Did Disney copy this??

  • Nah...this cartoon is the 1930s. Mickey first appeared in 1928 with the red shorts so they didn't copy. =P

  • Actually, he didn't appear with red shorts since they were in black and white.

  • @roroizbuff Try looking at the dates of Steamboat Willie and this.

  • @roroizbuff mickey mouse was actually created before this!

  • Wow, I miss cartoons like these, the new ones now aren't as good, hell they suck! Cartoons are good from about... oh I say 1997 or'98 'till the 20's or 30's. Silly Shenanigans! XD

  • this is great- when cartoons were actually drawn- con crappy computer animation. Alot of time & effort went into these- and it shows.

  • ...it came out 1931...

    not in the 1920:th

  • I live for creepy old stuff like this! Great! Thanks for posting.

  • man these cartoons are even bette than the ones that we have nowadays

  • Wow! That was great!

  • God I love this. Can anyone tell me where I can buy dvds of these old cartoons.Just listen to the music.

  • I found a collection of Van Beuren's Tom & Jerry flicks on DVD at a Wal-Mart in Kansas City in the $1 rack 3-28-07. Look for the animated collections. This store had several different DVDs of which the old Tom and Jerry's was one.

  • Thanks for the info. The problem for me is that I live in the UK and I find it hard to get hold of anything like this.I wasn't even sure if you could get them at all.I just love almost anything from this era. What a bargin though $1 - !

  • These cartoons might be labeled "Dick & Larry" instead of "Tom & Jerry." The company who issued them on 8 and/or 16 mm film in the 1940s renamed the characters because of the better-known MGM cartoons.

  • I honestly think it's helpful to those who know them as Tom & Jerry, plus it says so in the Cartoon. Wouldn't want any confusion.

What so said though is totally true.

  • According to Wikipedia, Joseph Barbera worked on this series before he went to tc create the popular cat and mouse duo, Tom and Jerry alongside with Bill Hanna.

  • @KrazyKartoonKid Funny how the cat and mouse duo names were pulled out of a hat.

  • that was beast, yea old cartoons!

  • This is groovy.
