You play as multiple players. Your not just one with flashbacks. Most of the ODST soldiers were separated because they were off course.

maybe like this, if you played halo 1.. maybe you saw this scene where Master Chief gets a chip out of a helmet and starts seeing what the soldier saw (this level "343 Guilty Spark" when you first see the flood ... hope this helped =)

lol a good theory by your friend but the overwhelming evidence points to Reach referring to the planet Reach; the training planet where Spartans are nurtured. Also, it says something about the beginning even when you know the end (Halo 1,2 + 3) so again that suggest something about the destruction of all the Spartans save Chief
