  • I love cat woman.

  • This was the most impressive game ever on the Mega CD! I loved the driving part a lot, as it reminded me of those cool sprite scale games from sega :-D

  • This just looks terrible no fun at all. The graphics look like that of the atari lynx which says a lot for the lynx.

  • How hard would it have been to increase the color palette with the Sega CD attachment? The only advantages the SNES had over the Genesis was the color palette and sound chip. The CD eliminated one disadvantage so why not fix the other? It probably doesn't matter anyway because the US market was full of FMV garbage while Japan was getting lots of cool games on the PC Engine CDROM but still, if you're going to charge people $300 for an attachment, up the colors. So many poor decisions by Sega.

  • Is this all you do? Drive and shoot things?

  • I liked this game, not as much as Soul Star, but nonetheless, a great game to play....especially when Batman dominated the movie market around that time. Here's another cd I used to play in the car due to the versatility of the cd rom discs used in these systems.

  • Danny Elfman Goes Retro!!!!!

  • Psychedelic @____________@

  • I like boss tune from driving levels and yes, far from perfect Genesis version became much better in CD version.

  • is this version as good as the mega drive one cause i use to have that one but never played this one b 4

  • @SuperUndertaker29 sega cd version is way better

  • image this in 3d,.mmmm,,sweet glasses on and gamen,,

  • lol batman has been playing to much gta from what I have seen

  • I love the music

  • i still listen to that track while i am driving its so cool

  • Best opening scene for a video game ever

  • wow I seached for this game forever. I remember playing it at toys r us when I was a little kid.. it was so awesome. But seeing it now... wow it sucks : D

  • SNES version was much better

  • @JuiKuen I AGREE.

  • @JuiKuen: There isn't a SNES version of this game. Same license, completely different games.

  • shoulda used Danny Elfman's original music from the movie or something similar sounding

  • Batman got Road Rage!!

  • Don't Mock the Mega CD, it was a precursor to the Playstation and since then games have exploded in to the mainstream.

  • Excellent music, dark ambiance, this Batman on SegaCD is perhaps the best Batman game ever released and one of the best SegaCD game.

  • Grand Theft Batman IMO

  • Is this all you do. Drive the bat mobile and shoot cars?

  • @megamanx1800 No. Half the game was 2D platforming, and some of the 3D stages were in the sewers, controlling the Batskiboat.

  • Sega CD could have pounded the SNES into the ground if all the games were like the driving stages in this game. Killer music, great graphics, and clear and powerful sound effects. It's a damn shame. For these reasons Sega never deserves to return to the hardware market because of their stupid decision making. They had fine pieces of hardware with the Saturn and Dreamcast and tanked them both. This game represents what Sega could have been.

  • @OldsXCool I have read this a few times and reviewers on here often say that Sega were beaten only by themselves. The Saturn was indeed a solid piece of hardware, some say better than the PS1 in many ways but it was rushed and the developers had little time with it. They were also still supporting other platforms and should have put all their resources into the Saturn as Sega were still a smaller company than Sony and Nintendo. What a shame!

  • good stuff ~ gets Ur bat on the ball ~

  • Move bitch, get out the way

Get out the way bitch, get out the way

  • @monkyracer Always some room for some Luda! How about "Southern Hospitality" bumping in the Batmobile?

  • Where CD version is different to cartridge version(except intro)?

  • looks awful now lol

  • @meathookd That's a matter of opinion champ.

  • Man this game looks really impressive for early 90's. They need to bring this Batmobile back for the newer movies.

  • One of the best Mega CD games ever. Period.

  • @YuzoTibi could not agree with you more. this game really looked like those arcade games like outrun, afterburner, and whatever sprite scaler game out. those sprites really are big, detailed, and the scaling goes smooth and fast enough!

  • how is the sega genesis and sega cd version different?

  • The Mega CD version adds the driving stages and obviously this amazing soundtrack. Both share the same platforming stages.

  • alot, segacd version is 3d, has better cutscenes...

  • I think it's becaouse of the sound quality is much more better, And i think you can fit more on a cd than a cartrige. But I'm sure it's the sound quality is biggest difference.

  • I had one also & this game, i agree!

  • For anyone that never owned Sega CD, the sound was more than outstanding. I still play current day games, but there is still something about the crisp sound of that system and well done soundtracks.

  • Okay, I admit the soundtrack for this stage was epic. But, um....Where's the Batman theme?

  • True

  • i was disapointed by this CD conversion. The driving levels are too hard and the musics of the platform levels are better in the Genesis version.

  • I played Batman Returns from Sega CD before and I couldn't going to the next level!

  • is the whole game driving

  • @tyjay191 No, there are the platform sequences of the Genesis version between the driving levels...

  • Reminds me of mega race

  • Yer I liked this game but found it had a lot of slow down

  • i remember when i got this game for christmas with the sega cd. :-))

  • From what I can see the reason TH was held in higher regard was because of the brighter colour pallette. This game just looks plain drab to be honest. Don't get me wrong though, from a technical standpoint it's great!

  • I have to admit, it does sound pretty impressive though!

  • how the hell do you go from the first 25 seconds of this game to this?? lol O how I miss the days of old

  • Not sure why a CD was required although it does look more arcade like.

  • this ain batman returns?? or is it?

  • ofcourse it is, the sega cd version is as u see more 3D then the sega genesis version

  • it reminds me of the adventures of batman and robin for the sega cd

  • awesome looking game, only sega could have boosted the colour pallet of the sega to create more impressive looking tiles like outrun or perhaps rad mobile sega cd had the scaling.

  • Good music, good game.

  • I just bought this... woooot

  • ...is that all there is to this game? Driving and blowing stuff up?

Honestly, it's like dedicating a whole game to bonus stages.

  • you´r wrong this game is one act dedicated to driving stages and the second act dedicated to classic plataform action, and that secuence repeats until the last level , its a fantastic game you should give it a chance

  • Well, it's nice to know that this game isn't one big bonus stage.

  • It has everything the sega genesis version has, plus the driving.

  • I dont remember any of this in the film?

  • You mean like Outrun? That's all that game was, but less - Outrun was just straight driving, but people loved it. I think this is a neat ass game, that took the fun gameplay of OutRun and injected some explosions and guns, as well as sweet Parallax backgrounds and 3d environments.

  • lol jack in the box on the back of the fucking truck

  • I loved the sega CD....

the only issue involved the fact that the genesis couldn't display a lot of colors like the Super Nintendo

but this was a great game

  • In the description you forgot to mention the brilliant soundtrack and the mastermind who created it.

  • Yeah, batman's listening to it while he's busting bad guys on the highway. lol... but really I would like to know who did the music. Sounds like general rock to me.

  • Spencer Nilson (I usually spell his last name wrong. Look for the credits on this game and you will find him). He also did the soundtrack for the first Ecco the Dolphin on the Sega CD, among others. I would love to see where this guy ended up, because his music was phenomenal, over 15 years ago.. Definitely a breakthrough in terms of sound design for games--However, most of this seems to have gone unnoticed, back then and even now.

  • this stuff shown on sge cd is impossible on any 16 bit consoles except sega cd offourse, sega was in the league with this thing at the time, only more colours and maybe could have had arcade at home,i read that the sega cd is quit powerfull but not many knew how to work with the colurs sprites etc to fully potentialize it.this is way better then pce.

  • Hell, i dont think even the Neo Geo could handle the driving scenes this well. Just look at Riding Hero on the Neo.

  • true

  • Could you please tell me what that ASCI chip is? AFAIK it doesn't exist (Been reading Sega CD's programming manual)

  • looks like batman really doesn't like anyone else driving on the same road as him

  • Does anyone know about a prototype of this game?

In old Gamepro/EGM issues you could clearly see screenshots of set-pieces that were not included in the final game (like those giant statues of the platform version being included in the driving section with a tunnel underneath them, or a more comic book looking Batman in the level intro)

  • You could switch off the platforming sections and just play the driving stages.

The driving game is a classic game in of itself. I spent many hours playing it and mastering it.

Sega Japan were daft not to bring their arcade games to the Mega-CD. They should have hired John to handle the conversions.

John O'Brien should have been hired by AM2.

  • ooh did we get braindamage before finish this one. its a great game, crazy music. listen at the last part 4.00 and til end. Must have been 15 years since i play this but that beat is so stuck in my spine ::))) CARLITOPARADISE,yes jewells! and BIGDADDY(or something like), i actually think this were spritescaling (not sure but) and bout VR youre right! it all polygons,we actually for the first time drove ON an surface, not just "steered the background" Milestone!

  • True Jewell Team !

  • are you talking sales volume, because overall there wasn't a huge difference between 90-95. For a while Sega was on top and for a while Nintendo took the lead until the 16 bit game wars ended. I fail to see how the NIntendo version was "MUCH" better, if better at all.

  • i loved this game.after the driving there was always a jump and run part that was insane difficult.the game magazins gave the game about 80-85% on the funscale.good old memories

  • is the whole game just driving? it looks like it would get boring after a while.

  • Wonder If Wii store will have this?

  • THEY DON'T HAVE PERMISSION TO PUT MOVIE LICENSES ON THE SHOP CHANNEL! god.

  • it wont

  • How do you get this on PSP??

  • man seeing this is crazy....i look at this and then i play call of duty 4 on my 360 and all i can say is that....we've come a long fucking way.

  • Oh wow this brings back memories.

  • The music in the segaCD version is so awesome, I ripped it all to MP3 and still enjoy it.

  • WTF?! Why does Batman get points for destroying mini-vans? They probably have families in them! :(

  • What is with mega cd's being races. They all seem the same just different controls and different clips and stages. Most of it is the same like when you are being timed in races. It is all the same.

  • i Agree Whit You Team : Thunder Hawk Has Nothing to Do..Near Batman Returns...

Maybe the Best Sega Cd Game ? i dont know but for sure one of them..Yes it Showed How Powerfull is The Machine Using Scalling Rotation Zoon Awesomely...an Arcade in Your Home !IF More Games Like this One Could Habe been Appeared Instead of all those Remakes of the Cartdrigde ...(That was a Waste of Potencial )

Anyway Silpheed and Many Others are Enough to Be in Love Whit the Magical Add on HeHe Hugs Buddy

  • yep,spent maaany weeks inthere,Amplafied :) the music is dead-on!

Agree,i still can bite my tounge off i sold my M-cd (the 1st one in sweden! I should go back to a store as the owner was unsure it was out or so.. That saturday his brother jumped in and ran the Store,he went down the stares went up n down of the place and guess what?? TA DAAA,was it sega saturn u said? YES it was sir. 3700:- (app.350£) with solfeace and (some other) i went home - with THE SHOWMACHINE not yet installled :)

  • Thunderhawk was free-ranging; this is not. I doubt that explains all the differences, but it does explain some of them (lack of 3D stuff mainly). However, you'd think that Thunderhawk would be able to push a better framerate and more colors given that it's not doing as much...

  • this game is only on batmovel? where r the fights?

  • This game is both batmobile and fighting.

  • I thinked the batmobile lost a wheel XD

  • Nice I have it on my psp to.But im playing snatcher the most.

  • i used to spend hours on this game when i was a kid just to listen to the music alone.

  • Nintendo been giving me the blister.

  • super nintendo cant do scaling and rotation as good as the sega cd. sega cd can scale multiple objects and snes can only scale a background image.

  • I always thought this was the only good part about Batman Returns on the Mega / Sega CD. The rest of it was this lousy cartridge game. Also I thought musician Spencer Neilsen was OVERRATED. Sure he's a talented musician but

the music didn't fit the game. I prefered they had a Danny Elfman score like in the movies. Oh well...

  • WORD

  • Neilsen was good, and his work on Sonic CD wasn't bad (the music actually went with the atmosphere) but didn't give the sense of speed.

  • superb music

  • hmm, nice mode 7 graphics.

  • Mode 7 is a SNES gfx mode, not a sega cd and gene mode, this my friend, is actualy polygon ground, also mode 7 has no ability to produce hills etc, and can only print object flat on the ground for say a pile of snow, also look at the buildings.

  • So is this for the Sega CD 32X combo if it's polygonal?

  • no its still SegaCD. The SegaCD can produce limited quantities of polygons ala Silpheed and Thunderstrike, its just for sega cd though.

  • BTW the buildings are pre-rendered.

And it's amazing that that 16-bit system can produce polygons.

  • Do you think the SNES with the Super FX and the Genesis/Megadrive with the SVP processor would be able to pull this off?

  • Yes it would'nt be as fast though.

  • Neither the SNES w/SuperFX of Megadrive w/SVP were able to scale and rotate multiple objects at once. If you notice in MD Virtua Racing, there is no sprite scaling, its all polygons. The SNES' Mode7 could only scale/rotate one object (foreground or background) at a time, for instance in F-Zero, where the track scaled and rotated, but none of the 'cars' did.

  • not sure what this was voted down, it's true.

  • That's right. The SNES had scaling and rotation for the tiled background (i.e. mode 7) but it could not do this for the player characters (sprites) themselves. This is why F-Zero and all the F1 racing games never had smoothly scaling objects; The system simply did not have sprite scaling.

  • Nothing Pre-Rendered here. The whole game is done in real time. You can slow down, speed up and even park if you want in this game. Pre rendered games you have to stick to the set course at the set speed. Silpheed is a good example of this. You can not stop to look around at the scenery in Silpheed.

  • I mean the buildings look like sprites. If you prove me wrong, then you've proven me wrong.

  • there are no polygons used here. all done with per-scanline manipulation(the street layer for example).

  • I hate the Batman games on Sega CD. There just driving games.

  • not the first one

  • they had some side scrolling but cat woman was impossible to beat and there were too many driving stages

  • Why do you do so many crappy comments?

  • oh hell yeah!

  • perfect sega cd game

  • maganda sha kaso pangit

  • can u find the tracks on limewire?anyone?

  • Why would you want to listen them? That's sad.

  • r u kidding ?these tracks cool.anyway,i never had this game to listen to the tracks.

  • Are you kidding? I have this game and sometimes i put the cd in my sound system to listen to, it has amazing songs on it, the soundtrack for this game was superb.

  • lol...good video

  • I love this games music track. Wish I could buy it somewhere.

  • you could just buy the game off e bay,it works in a cd player!just dont play track 1.that is the game data.

  • Buy the game, it plays the music in any cd player!

  • It does? I've never heard of that.

  • Yep i just tested it to make sure, plays like a normal audio cd in my sound system (apart from the first track which is a data track)

  • yeah most early CD-ROM games have standard PCM Redbook audio on them after track 1 witch is that data of the game. Even early PSX games like Twisted Metal. I remember playing TM on PSX back in the day and swapping out the game for the music CD of my choice. once the level loads up and your playing you could do that!

  • wow you really know your stuff with sega (((reading your description))) yeah total shame..in all aspects of sega and ALL of there staff....LONG LIVE SEGA CD and DREAMCAST!!!!!

  • I love the music in this game

  • cool game

  • REminds me of Kyle Petty's No Fear Racing.

  • ladies and gentlemans here is one of the best sega cd games...an arcade in your home!!

  • The driving sequences were good, but the side-scrolling "Batman" levels were the same as the Genesis game and not very good... I remember SEGA making a big stink about how they spent all this money for a state-of-the-art recording studio so they could make all this great music for the Sega-CD games... The music in this game sounded pretty darn average!! The opening graphics of Batman behind the steering wheel were great, though...

  • I have this game & love the driving stages. I also have the Batman & Robin Animated Series game for Sega CD for years (still unopened). I heard the reviews for the driving stages were so good that they made that game an only driving game. I gotta open it soon!! Batman Returns for Sega CD has a killer soundtrack too.

  • I have Batman Returns on the Sega Mega Drive 2 and the graphics were excelent but this here is way better! Nice video. You brought old memorys back! Batman FOREVER!

  • this game is a master piece of art

    check out the background music...

    congratulations sega!!

  • the snes one seems alot better

  • seems.....but is not..

  • The platform portion of the SNES is better. But the Sega CD's driving parts kick ass. I have yet to play another game that has such great combat driving action. I love Streets of Sim City for the PC, but the driving isn't as smooth.

  • The Chip is calles ASIC not ASCI

  • Good game. Terrible video. Why is it so compressed?

  • ouch. y'know, the driving stage in the super nintendo version was much better looking

  • thank you mode 7. im sure the sega genesis had the same thing, they just couldnt find a way to utilize it like nintendo did. thats why they came up with blast proccessing.

  • I remember this game, it was awesome, im pretty sure later on in the game you could drive a boat thing in the sewers? either way it was a great game for the times! :D

  • Yes, the 4th & 5th driving stages were in the Batskiboat. You fight a giant metallic skull at the end of the 4th (looks like the endoskeleton's skull from Terminator). And in the 5th you fight the Penguin in his duck.

  • My favorite stages are the 2nd (Winter Wonderland) and 3rd (Gotham City Limits). There is so much action and crap you gotta dodge & destroy that it's loads of fun. I love side swiping those SUV's into trees, the Oswald Cobblepot for mayor signs, and anything else I can ram them into.

  • MMMMmmh? I don't know if its the video quality, but the graphics look a little bit crappy. Too bad AVGN didn't mention it on his Sega CD review.

  • The graphics are actually highly advanced for the time. Some early PSX games didn't look this good... Also, that "review" the AVGN gave wasn't very fair, as he basically played the worst games on the console.

  • The system had some damn good games: Final Fight CD (best console version); Shining Force CD; Batman Returns; Flink; Terminator; Sol Feace; Sonic CD; Adventures of Batman & Robin; Lunar; Lunar II; Vay; Dark Wizard; Lords of Thunder; Mega Race; Puggsy; Spider-Man vs. Kingpin; etc

  • Agreed, and those weren't even some of the best of them, and you forgot the best, Snatcher!

  • Never played Snatcher and don't have it either.

  • I had read about the driving stages in the Sega CD version of Batman Returns before, but I had never actually seen them. They look awesome. Thanks for posting this.
