I have the same pastels you have, could you pastel over a painted horse? (like you have a breyer that came white, but wnt to pastel it differently, could you do that?) thnx!
@krazybreyergal369 I've never tried that but it might work as long as you spray matte finish on the horse before you start pastelling. I wouldn't do it though since the pastels might be more likely to chip with out a primer base coat.
@hillbillyhoodoo The can says the dry time is 10-15 minutes and the handle time is 2 hours. I usually only wait 15 minutes but 2 hours would probably be best.
say that i want to do a palamino, [sorry if its not spelled right] how would i do that? do i paint it like you did with really light cream colors or do i use yellowish colors?
do you know any other sealer sprays? ive tryed yet another custom and the color isnt working, its speckled and looks nothing like yours :( i feel like i should give up pasteling all together. maybe i can make a vid of them and make a video responce so you can see them
@terriertimetoo Are you using Krylon matte finish? You may not be spraying enough, I'm not really sure what could cause that. Another spray I've heard of people using is Testors dull Coat.
@SaturnineStudios yes im using kylon matte finish, and i dont think im spraying anyless then you were in the vid. I have heard of the Testors dull coat but i dont know where to find it. This is all frustrating because it seems to work for everyone else and no one can figure out my problem, but i will try to find a different spray. Thanks
I'm ready to paint, but when I try to make the pastel into powder, it just clumps together on the scissors. Do you have any tips to make it into powder? I love these videos by the way :)
Thank you for this vid!!!! it will help me for customizing a dapple grey qh even though ur not doing one=). I ordered a beat up zippo pine bar because i love that mold and it will hopefully turn out to be a nice western pleasure dapple grey. I took the grey colors after my own wp qh named jake. One of my dreams is to have Jake made into a breyer moldel but i dout that =) one more thing do you think Michael's craft store will have pastels and primer? thank you!!
I have just started pasteling and it is coming out really spotty, like the pastel isn't getting into the pores or something. Do you know how to fix it? Do I need to sand more or just put a few layers of prime on it to even it out some?
that was so amazing!! how can u do all of tht? u have talent girl. can u also do a grey/white the same coat as Blanco? u know the horse who played um Shadowfax in the lord of the rings. i am a huge fan of Shadowfax. man u are so good. better than me. i bet u did really good, amazing realistic like appaloosas models. u are so amazing. i really love ur art work.
do you ever need to w ash your brushes between customs? mine always get really dark, and when you try to do the light base coat it comes out a muddy brownish color.
That is amazing! But i have a question, I'm getting 5 new stablemates soon, and i have ordered one in particular that I absolutely ADORE! i love him so much, and I would like to customize him to something great...er. I only have regular acrylic paint to work with and a series of brushes so they are not a problem. So basically what I'm asking is: Could you please make a tutorial on how to make a great custom using acrylics and brushes without all the fancy tools? :S Please and thank you!
@BreyerBay300 I don't have time to do tutorials anymore but I can give you some advice. Like with pastels always start from darkest to lightest in layers. Acrylics tend to be thick and can cause brushstrokes. If you water the paint down and do multiple coats you can help eliminate brush strokes. Acrylics also dry fairly quickly and watering them down will give you a little bit more working time. Good luck!

@reptilesnfoods I've never done anything other than repaint a Schleich but I'd imagine repositioning would be difficult because of the hair pattern. For paint horses I pastel the color and then later use white acrylic paint and a brush to make the white markings.
@RabiruchiLess I use Krylon Matte Finish. I've sprayed it on numerous types of resins and its worked fine. I'd spray a small test on a non visible part to see if there's any reactions.

i will be doing my first custom and have all the supplies! but i have a VERY important question! since i am priming and holding from the tail, at what point do I prime that and do that? or do I use acrylic paint instead of pastels?
I would just like to throw in that you need a matte fixative to seal in the pastels if you are doing another layer. Gloss doesnt provide any tooth for the pastel to grab on =)
where do you get your supplies at and how much do they cost? and what brands do you use? sorry if you said it in the video,i don't have speakers right now.
@supdood2 you can just use matte, that's what I did for years. I'm trying to see if the Crystal clear makes a difference but I've only used it on one horse so far.
A couple layers of Krylon matte finish will help seal the horse with a thick layer of protection. The you can gloss it with either Krylon Crystal Clear or another higher gloss finish.
How do you gloss a horse. I really need help with that. And also what do you spray on the horse to prevent it from getting the paint rubbed off so easily??
i love the horse that you used for a reference!!! VERY CUTE!!! how long does it take to pastel a horse until it looks like the reference horse?!?!?! like 2 to 4 days??
@SaturnineStudios the crystal galze is made by the same brand that the matte finish you are using is. All it is is a clear finishing glaze that makes it shiny
I am going to be creating a leopard Appaloosa using acrylic paint. What spray would I use to seal in the paint when I'm done so the paint dousn't rub off?
Hey! This helps a lot Do you have to know a lot about real horses to do this because I love horses just don't no every fact lol! Oh and have you made any videos on how to make an appy? (appaloosa)
@chillycat12 Having knowledge on horses always helps so you know what colors certain breeds have. I don't have any appy videos unfortunately, I've only painted an appy once and will make a video when I get more practice.
@HorseKrazy4ever Yeah, when I've finished pastelling the horse's body I cover it in saran wrap except for the tail, prime the tail and then paint or pastel it separately.
@SaturnineStudios Why not just put the horse down after pasteling it and spray the part you held? I would think it would be easier. Hah, I've always done that.
@SaturnineStudios ok thx i just wanted to know because i have a load of oil pastels! but no normal ones! just wondering are soft pastels the same as wat u use on a model horse??
I love this custom! :D Just wondering, when you primed the model, you left the black bit of his tail where you were holding him. Since you were doing a bay did you leave it black because the mane & tail will be black? Thanks. If I primed a black horse, to be chestnut, would I have to prime the bit where I hold it to if the tail & mane were to be chestnut? Sorry if I don't make much sense. :P Also, I know it's been like 2 years since this was uploaded... but are you gonna do part 4 and 5? Thanks.
wow, thanks! I've been wanting to do a custom model since summer, I tried once with paint but the streaky finish discouraged me, but this technique looks good :) i'm definitely going to try this soon (:
After you did the first layer of pasteling is it matte finish you spray? And you do that after every layer? Thanks. :) Also, how long does the spray take to dry before you put the next layer on? Thanks. :D
OK thanks, I have 4 olf I think 1984 Breyers, they aren't in boxes, so they have horrible seams, and the color faded. I will post a video response when they are finished ;-)
I have a buckskin pony I want to model. He's a light buckskin though and in his lightest spots are white. Should I still brush the white on or just skip that?
These videos help a lot. Thanks.

@RabiruchiLess I use Krylon Matte Finish. I've sprayed it on numerous types of resins and its worked fine. I'd spray a small test on a non visible part to see if there's any reactions.

Where'd you get the horse model??
2Akitahtiger 1 year ago
I think it was from one of the Walmart mustangs sets.
SaturnineStudios 1 year ago
Thank you very much.

its better if u use q-tips because u can press the color in more and u dont hav 2 shave of the dust. just rub it off with the q-tip

wow, thanks!

Thanks. :D
DiamondRacer11 1 year ago
Yup, you spray the matte between every single layer. I wait about 15 minutes after spraying before starting the next layer of pastels.

Okay, thanks. :D

Thanks, I went to your site, and looked at your stuff, great job, One question though,
When you are finished, do they still feel like a Bryer, or do they have like rubbery finish?
And thanks, in the spring I'm gonna use this method to paint my old Roy Rogers, Trigger model. He is horribly worn and has seams all over the place!
docsprincess355 2 years ago
They don't feel rubbery, just the same as a regular Breyer. =)
SaturnineStudios 2 years ago
OK thanks, I have 4 olf I think 1984 Breyers, they aren't in boxes, so they have horrible seams, and the color faded. I will post a video response when they are finished ;-)

Oooo!!
I am SO doing this!
I have a question
I have a buckskin pony I want to model. He's a light buckskin though and in his lightest spots are white. Should I still brush the white on or just skip that?

ThePony1221 2 years ago
They're chalk pastels, not the oil kind. The spray I use between the layers is called Krylon matte finish.
SaturnineStudios 2 years ago
what store do u find them at
ThePony1221 2 years ago

will oil pastels work?
caohorse 2 years ago
No, they have to be the chalk kind. Oil pastels are too oily and chunky.
