Yay! I was at this performance in Tokyo 1963 October! I was just a little kid, but fell in love with Bastianini. Since then, I am following his image in all the guys. I cannot believe he had already cancer in his vocal cord that time and under secret treatment at Swizerland.
He's Ettore Bastianini. He's a baritone, not a bass. He started out as a bass, but that means no more really than the fact that Bergonzi started out as a baritone or Marilyn Horne started out as a lyric soprano. Thankfully for us, they all found their true fachs. And there are many, many others with similar stories.
I was under the impression that a fach was a category or repertoire that was suited to a particular voice type, and not a voice type in and of itself. The Germans, who use (or used) the fach system had a series of roles and opere that your voice type was best suited for. It was not intended to identify a voice type.
Hey she's an excellent mezzo. I knew her only by small roles in some studio recordings, but she's a really good Azucena. What a pity Bastianini doesn't sing more in this video, IMHO his timbre is the most beautiful among all baritones.

Bastianini's voice actually physically excites me, as does Franco Corelli's.

Thanks! Sometimes you can find fantastic, and absolutely unknown singers. Listen the Killer in the Brindisi of Macbeth with Bruson and Sylvia Sass.

Danieli sings Suzuki to Callas's Butterfly in the Karajan recording. Hardly a bit part, and a sign of the high esteem in which she was held.
