This is the first time I have seen this clip since seeing that show live on air in 1998 and I remember it like it was yesterday. That was a very nice gesture on the part of Ving Rhames - but I believe that as much as he appreciated it, Jack Lemmon was a bit lost as to what to do. I think lots of people laughed at Rhames for that, and some said that Jack Lemmon did not need his "charity". I guess it depends on the way you look at it; and WHY does everything have to be about RACE, commenters?
House nigger mentality, forreal ...but this is the same actor who went from playing one of the strongest black characters I had even seen in Rosewood, to getting fucked in the ass by white racists in Pulp Fiction (and since then, has played a drag queen)...
@Lashid4u thats weird i jis saw that malcom x denzel clip here on youtube earlier, i was watching something about obama being an uncle tom and that clip popped up haha and now u mention it, creepy how it jis resurfaced again... coincidence? hmmm
These comments seem all very biased/one-sided ...WHY do I have a feeling that my comments will be removed ...Well, no matter ...I've already posted this at a forum where blacks don't seek integration...
It also has nothing to do with Vinh Rhames being black and Jack Lemmon being white. Ving Rhames was chosen and given the award. The tactful and right thing for him to do is simply accept it.

Hollywood relys heavily on the foreign press. The producers, actors, etc, wouldn't make as nearly as much money or be as famous as they are without the foreign press. As a matter of fact they are more likely to be famous overseas. Did u guys know that David Hasselhoff was a big singing star in Germany? The judgement of the foreign press is supposed to be very important. It is insulting for them to choose YOU & then YOU choose somebody else. But u guys are a bunch of dumb liberals & don't think.
I don't think u guys understand how important the foreign press (Golden Globes) is to Hollywood. Imagine urself & staff putting on a big awards show for the community & u spend countless hours reviewing each resident choose who u feel deserves the award, put on an elaborate show with full coverage, present the award to that person & he gives it away?!! U would be insulted. The recipeint of the award just took matters in his own hands & made it about himself & who he thinks should win. Not good.
that was surprisingly touching. seeing him again was nice. I grew up in the 90s watching his movies with Walter Matthau and I was sad to hear of his passing in the early 2000s. So close after the passing of Matthau and I remember people saying that Lemmon possibly passed away of a broken heart after Matthau did. They were a great on-camera team.

This whole thing is embarrassing..imagine putting on an award show, going through all the films and finally choosing who is going to win, only to have the recipient decide who is going to win and gives it to that person. It is indeed an insult to the organization. Ving Rhames is a black man with an inferior superiority complex who now that he has success is trying to redeem his superiority by giving something to a white man because it is usally vice versa. And he didn't thank the Foreign Press!
Jack lemon looks like the guy who said "If I was 50 years young I'll kick your ass" to Mayweather. Both great actors, so many legends in that room, old and young just enjoying and embracing this magical moment, fucking epic.
@JOK3R187 Oh please ...a black person is rarely given the respect and honor deserved (thinking Denzel in Malcolm X & Hurricane), and when this brotha DOES get an honor, he gives it back to the white man, who has already received his share of honors ...More like a COON act!
@Lashid4u Oh, please - when Lemmon said "I WILL get this back to you" - he meant it. That award is at Ving's house, I assure you. What if the roles had been reversed? If Lemmon had given his to Rhames I guess you would say that he was belittling the poor black guy & giving him "charity" that he should have won in the first place. I thought Rhames meant well but it wasn't appropriate. Jack Lemmon was gracious but you could see he felt so awkward, like, "somebody get me out of this!"
@MichaelC2B See, y'all like this kinda "loyal kneegrow" shit, which is why y'all see no issue w/ this...Meryl Streep just won an Oscar over that black actress, and she just had a "FUCK THAT" attitude, making sure that she let it be known that she don't give a fuck about who may think is more deserving! Black folks are always so damn "considerate" of those who aint hardly considerate of us...
What I love about this is that VING WAS FREE TO CHOOSE, due to all of the civil rights work that others have sacrificed and have suffered under & all that we have done and endured, --to see this Fully Equal African American man show this love and true respect, choosing to give--is what all of our suffering was for.HE GOT A NEW AWARD. SOme of you white folks here may not understand why some blacks kiss up to you like this, but many of the blacks reading this know it for what it is. It's not just Ving Rhames and black actors, it's the black male and female who works at any job in America, who go out of their way to agree with and be accepted by the white people they work with or for. Most cases, it isnt even a superior, just a white co-worker. If it ain't from the heart, then it has no dignity! Malik Jubal
I've got a simple question, and I hope you're able to answer it with genuine integrity. Has Ving Rhames stated in an interview somewhere that giving his award to Jack Lemmon was wrongly motivated? If so, please tell me where I can find that. Otherwise, your remarks are way the hell out of line.
@MrCache73 Ving does not have to say that giving Jack his award was wrong. I am not even saying it was wrong to give it! I am saying it is wrong to GIVE or DO anything for anyone, with the intention of brown nosing to that person, race, religion or political party. There are black actors and actresses who suffered many indignities decades ago to win or even be considered for these type od awards, and when we finally win by sheer talent, we give it back. con't..
@LordIam1 con't As I said, if he gifted it to Mr. Lemon out of sincere benevolence it is fine. And none of us can bet our life that Ving did not give it for the correct reason, however, in my opinion, I think he did it to solicite favor from white people, particularly those who own and operate the Hollywood machine. As said, I cannot prove it, and you can't prove he didn't,we are all just here to blog and give an opinion. No need to curse and be profane at each other here. Malik Jubal
Wow. You are the reason millions of brainwashed , young African-American youngsters are STILL reverse racist to this day. Holy shit man. That was 70 something odd years ago. "some of you white folks". How is that different then saying "Some of you black folks".... ? Tell me. I'd love to know. Because I personally wasn't alive in 1963 and have no clue how the REAL prejudice looked. I mean, I have what history books tell me, and what parents tell me, but I didn't see it first hand
@QuizzicalHuffle It's obvious that you haven't experienced any REAL racism ...Racism is about power, fool ...It's interesting how whites, today, have flipped shit, trying to make blacks appear "racist" (even when they are just confronting racism), to play down the centuries of evil shit that they've pulled ...I've made a vid for those like yourself ..it's titled "Black People are Just as Racist"
And you cat like you're the new age answer to all things racial. I personally find it a joke when i listen to you complain about race, and about white men and women. There is literally not a difference between you and the same ignorant white people who owned slaves hundreds of years ago. So you think because 50 years ago some dumb ass people treated you bad that you can take it out on our current generation, get better funding for schools, etc? That's a fucking JOKE
You fir the arcehtype African-American male perfectly, though. Changing your name to a Muslim name because EVERYONE else does it. That's it. We're all hardcore gangsters who are down to kill and sell drugs and be ALL STREET THUG NAZTY OH YEAH but most of them came from homes in suburbs bigger then my fucking house. Gimme a god damn brake.
Here's something else to wrap your little mind around, genius. Fist pounds,African garbs, etc are completely fine to be work, and if commented on, one can face jail time and/or a beatdown from 121028 black people nearby, but if we sport a rebel flag anywhere, we're automatically deemed racists/skinhead. It's about heritage, and I get that. And i wouldn't never comment negatively on another culture's customs. But double standards just piss me off to no extent. WAKE UP
@pantsmaclachlan Yes, it was a very good moment at an Awards show. I agree totally. In fact, three movies that are like my Bible of movie watching is Ving Rhames-Don King Only in America and Jack Lemon in The Out of Towners and Glen Gary/Glen Ross. Glen Gary/Glen Ross, with all of the heavy-weight actors such as Al Pacino and Kevin Spacey, Jack Lemon is riveting and practically steals the movie, even in the after-math of Alec Balwin's opening salesman's Sermon on The Mount! Malik Jubal
@LordIam1 I can't believe I'm actually responding to this f***n bigot. Ving Rhames act here is a completely noble, honest one. Even a child can say that. There isn't a little to suspect. Lemmon is known to be a very down to earth person. I've read Kevin Spacy said this. He takes out time for everyone irrespective of his name and stature. I am pretty sure Ving Rhames would never have to do it to get Lemmon's attention or support. Or anyone for that matter. Lemmon was known a great human being!
@Pixieonthe7 My comment is not an attack againts Jack Lemmon, who is one of my favorite actors as is Ving Rhames. I am saying that many black people see the gesture of him giving the award to Lemmon as a POSSIBLE act of brown nose. Some call it cooning. I will never know Vings intentions here, and if he did it out of pure love and kindness, that is great. It seems that anything racial, SOME, not ALL, but SOME white people get pissed and curse, as in many of the comments here. Malik Jubal
Also, is there a moment like this in Award history? I seriously doubt... this is absolutely touching and entertaining at the same time! God bless both great actors. and RIP, Jack. We really really miss you!
@LordIam1 you sir are simple minded, with no respect for a thoughtful and heartfelt act of generousity. p.s. quit obsessing over white/black it makes you appear moronic.
I am all for given, when it is done with the proper intention and spirit behind it. However, Ving Rhames offered the award to Jack to win points with white America nad the Hollywood machine. In that vain, it is not a gift from the heart, it is a motivated scheme, and that is not generousity, that's phony philantrophy. If it is not from the heart and soul, it is from the ego. Malik Jubal
@LordIam1 I wonder if you'd have the guts to make such a filthy, offensive, presumptuous comment to Mr. Rhames' face. I sincerely doubt it. This is simply a fine actor affording a legendary actor a due he felt he deserved. It's self-loathing people like you who keep racism alive.
Oh, and it's giving not "given", and not "nad", vein, not "vain", generosity, not "generousity", philanthropy, not "philantropy", and Ignorant Racist, not Malik Jubal.
"Marsellus: What now? Let me tell you what now. I'ma call a coupla hard, pipe-hittin' niggas, who'll go to work on the homes here with a pair of pliers and a blow torch. You hear me talkin', hillbilly boy? I ain't through with you by a damn sight. I'ma get medieval on your ass. "
"Gary Dauphin, writing in Vibe, described Rhames' effort to give away his Golden Globe Award as "a grateful Negro happy to be invited to the party".[9] Sacha Jenkins, in her 2002 book Ego Trip's big book of racism, called it "Best Example of a Negro Thinking Awards Grow on Trees"." - wikipedia.
I can't believe how incredibly racist they are. I hope everybody boycotts these obviously racist publications. That's jealousy beyond reason.
Holy crap! I actually recognized all of the "celebrities" in this clip! Man, I miss celebs when it was more about their talent than their internet/gossip column presence...
@MrCache73 you are absolutely spot on! Didn't go through a lot of work of Ving, but what he did with Jack Lemmon proves how great a man could be! It's not at all about color and stuff...it's all about being a great Human Being!
@vicehoundelite - that's Tea Leoni, David Duchovny's Wife. She's been in a few movies and is probably best known for the TV show The Naked Truth from the mid 90s.
humble and respect two things that we will never see today.
this is a great vid to watch if you lost hope in mankind that being humble to those around you and showing thanks . RESPECT boys and girls, isn't just a word.
I don't see how what Rhames did was wrong...He looks up to Lemmon and felt he should give credit where it was due...He has said that he wouldn't be an actor if not for Lemmon
Giving is so much more rewarding than taking anyday! I wish it did not take me 22 years of my life to figure that out, but its better late than never. Its almost impossible to be this genuinely caring without Jesus the Christ living within you! You may look like you care but without Christ its usually for self benifit and not from the heart. This really showed Ving in a whole new light and I respect him much more as a brother, now Go Ving!God bless to all! and no nasty comments about my God IDC!
@DavidBlazeTV Nice job buddy, only took three times to get your lame ass come back right. The money you are making in your sleep must not be that great if you are as stupid as you appear to be.
I can see absolutely NOTHING wrong with what Ving Rhames did here, the man is clearly all heart and respect! What a heartwarming gesture, bless him for being who he is and all that he seems to stand for!
This is what happens, when people with class get together and perform. After a scene like this, the rest of the actors might as well of went home. Hard to follow something like that. Two great people.
i remember when this first happened a lot of people said he only did it for publicity you only have to look at his face to know he was totally sincere Jack Lemmon was a movie legend and this act will always be one of the greatest moments ever
I love it. A room full of professional actors weeping. There is nothing more genuine. They know when to 'kick it up a notch'. But it WAS a nice gesture.
awww what a big softie! especially nice of him considering that was one of jack lemmons last movies...i hope ving rhames gets some recognition for playing sonny liston
Rhames' performance was unbelievable and he 100% deserved that Golden Globe but wow, what an amazing thing to do for another legendary artist. Ving Rhames is the man!
Ving Rhames probly didn't give two sh!ts about that damn statue, or that old fart. He probly didn't want to be there either, but I'm sure the studio for the movie Ving was in strong-armed him into being there. He just saw a chance to make his mark and he went for it. Smart move.
seems pretty clear that Ving sees beyond black and white - he's respectful of ANOTHER artist/person...and some idiot wants to call him stupid for that? That is more of the problem, not the solution.
I never even knew this happened, before seeing this clip. The fact that it involved two of my favorite actors, and I still didn't know, is pathetic. Ving followed his heart and that's so refreshing. Very classy of him. It is unfortunate that this clip attracts negativity from some bargain basement IQ's, but racist morons can comment on this, too, and that's one of the things that make our Country great! Just ignore their comments, as if they don't exist.
@amar1989 IT SAD WHEN ITS SPECIAL FOR A BLACKMAN TO GIVE A WHITEMAN SOMETHING THAT HE DID NOT NEED OR EARNED. ITS QUITE OBSURD TO THINK THAT BY DOING THINGS LIKE THIS, BLACK PEOPLE WILL BE ACCEPTED BY AN INSTITUTION THAT STILL TREAT THEM LIKE THEY ARE ON THE PLANTATION. IF THEY GAVE RESPECT TO ANY ETHNIC GROUP I WOULD SAY THINGS LIKE THIS WOULD BE ACCEPTABLE, BUT HYPOCRITES IN HOLLYWOOD DONT GET THE PICTURE. SO FUCK YOU JACKASS YOU DONT EVEN KNOW THE FUCKING ANGLE I AM COMMING FROM.
@Vebinz I remember watching this, absolutely....what a wonderful gesture. Ving is an excellent person, how many others would even think of giving away their award?

Most cases, it isnt even a superior, just a white co-worker. If it ain't from the heart, then it has no dignity! Malik Jubal

@LordIam1
MrCache73 8 months ago 16
@MrCache73 Ving does not have to say that giving Jack his award was wrong. I am not even saying it was wrong to give it! I am saying it is wrong to GIVE or DO anything for anyone, with the intention of brown nosing to that person, race, religion or political party. There are black actors and actresses who suffered many indignities decades ago to win or even be considered for these type od awards, and when we finally win by sheer talent, we give it back. con't..
LordIam1 8 months ago
@LordIam1 con't As I said, if he gifted it to Mr. Lemon out of sincere benevolence it is fine. And none of us can bet our life that Ving did not give it for the correct reason, however, in my opinion, I think he did it to solicite favor from white people, particularly those who own and operate the Hollywood machine. As said, I cannot prove it, and you can't prove he didn't,we are all just here to blog and give an opinion. No need to curse and be profane at each other here. Malik Jubal

@LordIam1
QuizzicalHuffle 8 months ago
@QuizzicalHuffle It's obvious that you haven't experienced any REAL racism ...Racism is about power, fool ...It's interesting how whites, today, have flipped shit, trying to make blacks appear "racist" (even when they are just confronting racism), to play down the centuries of evil shit that they've pulled ...I've made a vid for those like yourself ..it's titled "Black People are Just as Racist"
Lashid4u 1 month ago
And you cat like you're the new age answer to all things racial. I personally find it a joke when i listen to you complain about race, and about white men and women. There is literally not a difference between you and the same ignorant white people who owned slaves hundreds of years ago. So you think because 50 years ago some dumb ass people treated you bad that you can take it out on our current generation, get better funding for schools, etc? That's a fucking JOKE
QuizzicalHuffle 8 months ago
You fir the arcehtype African-American male perfectly, though. Changing your name to a Muslim name because EVERYONE else does it. That's it. We're all hardcore gangsters who are down to kill and sell drugs and be ALL STREET THUG NAZTY OH YEAH but most of them came from homes in suburbs bigger then my fucking house. Gimme a god damn brake.
QuizzicalHuffle 8 months ago
Here's something else to wrap your little mind around, genius. Fist pounds,African garbs, etc are completely fine to be work, and if commented on, one can face jail time and/or a beatdown from 121028 black people nearby, but if we sport a rebel flag anywhere, we're automatically deemed racists/skinhead. It's about heritage, and I get that. And i wouldn't never comment negatively on another culture's customs. But double standards just piss me off to no extent. WAKE UP
QuizzicalHuffle 8 months ago
Oh, and btw. Notice how NO ONE liked your retarded comment, idiot.

@LordIam1 Or, it was just a nice moment at an awards show.
pantsmaclachlan 7 months ago
@pantsmaclachlan Yes, it was a very good moment at an Awards show. I agree totally. In fact, three movies that are like my Bible of movie watching is Ving Rhames-Don King Only in America and Jack Lemon in The Out of Towners and Glen Gary/Glen Ross. Glen Gary/Glen Ross, with all of the heavy-weight actors such as Al Pacino and Kevin Spacey, Jack Lemon is riveting and practically steals the movie, even in the after-math of Alec Balwin's opening salesman's Sermon on The Mount! Malik Jubal
LordIam1 7 months ago
@LordIam1 I can't believe I'm actually responding to this f***n bigot. Ving Rhames act here is a completely noble, honest one. Even a child can say that. There isn't a little to suspect. Lemmon is known to be a very down to earth person. I've read Kevin Spacy said this. He takes out time for everyone irrespective of his name and stature. I am pretty sure Ving Rhames would never have to do it to get Lemmon's attention or support. Or anyone for that matter. Lemmon was known a great human being!
Pixieonthe7 6 months ago
@Pixieonthe7 My comment is not an attack againts Jack Lemmon, who is one of my favorite actors as is Ving Rhames. I am saying that many black people see the gesture of him giving the award to Lemmon as a POSSIBLE act of brown nose. Some call it cooning. I will never know Vings intentions here, and if he did it out of pure love and kindness, that is great. It seems that anything racial, SOME, not ALL, but SOME white people get pissed and curse, as in many of the comments here. Malik Jubal
LordIam1 6 months ago
Also, is there a moment like this in Award history? I seriously doubt... this is absolutely touching and entertaining at the same time! God bless both great actors. and RIP, Jack. We really really miss you!
Pixieonthe7 6 months ago
@LordIam1 you sir are simple minded, with no respect for a thoughtful and heartfelt act of generousity. p.s. quit obsessing over white/black it makes you appear moronic.
The72koenig 2 months ago
I am all for given, when it is done with the proper intention and spirit behind it. However, Ving Rhames offered the award to Jack to win points with white America nad the Hollywood machine. In that vain, it is not a gift from the heart, it is a motivated scheme, and that is not generousity, that's phony philantrophy. If it is not from the heart and soul, it is from the ego. Malik Jubal
LordIam1 8 months ago
@LordIam1 I wonder if you'd have the guts to make such a filthy, offensive, presumptuous comment to Mr. Rhames' face. I sincerely doubt it. This is simply a fine actor affording a legendary actor a due he felt he deserved. It's self-loathing people like you who keep racism alive.
Oh, and it's giving not "given", and not "nad", vein, not "vain", generosity, not "generousity", philanthropy, not "philantropy", and Ignorant Racist, not Malik Jubal.
