First of all, for a change in .bashrc to take effect you need to logout and relogin. Pango uses dynamic modules for complex scripts, so it should not slow down Firefox if you are viewing plain English pages. The problem appears to be elsewhere and not related to Pango. Google for Pango and Firefox for similar discussions, explanations.
i dont see what you guys find in mint.. i first used ubuntu, and the installation was straight forward. the menu is much more simple.
besides, mint is just a ripoff from ubuntu with a different desktop and a green wallpaper. you can make ubuntu look exactly the same if you like that 'windows' look.
Oh also... shouldn't you re-execute the .bashrc file? So the command will be executed? Because I don't think restarting Firefox will automatically execute the .bashrc file. You'd have to logout and log back in, or source ~/.bashrc in the terminal to do that.
i've been using Chromium... which is the Google free version of Chrome... and I like it a lot so far. It's a pre beta version i think but it's still pretty stable. Flash works great. I think where it really kills FF is the speed of the Java script engine and forking each tab into it's own process.
you should try it gotbletu... and let us know what you think.
Thanks! :)

Thanks for the tip. I would have never realized that Pango could slow down Firefox... I wonder what it uses instead if it's not going to use Pango.

Hey I created a .bashrc with just the command. It seems to work.

lack of add-ons are a killer
TheyCallMeConfucious 2 years ago
the only addon that is glaringly missing is adblock... there is a version for Chrome/Chromium but it isn't as easy to install and doesnt work as well.
addons will be available in the future and right now this is in beta at the most.
