  • Does this song have a name now?

  • @trombophony runaway off the album High Violet

  • There are 16 estranged people here. This music is fuckin amazing!!! So great...soooo cooolllll !!! LOVE YOU!!!

  • The National does some amazing stuff! I haven't heard a song of theirs that isn't super creative and beautiful and like listening to a story. Lovelovelove.

  • Why has the drummer got Semtex?

  • Something beyond music !

  • Cymbal strike at 3:13 is too harsh. Drummers, even real good ones, need to stop whacking them cymbals!!

  • @willzer808 this has nothing to do with smashing the crash. But the position of the mic. Look @ 5:14. He is not smashing at all.

  • The name of the song is Runaway.

  • the library flood

  • exquisite.

  • Simply brilliant - can listen to this song over and over and...

  • brilliant.

  • I saw them live once, in Portugal, and I was sooo desapointed... I left earlier, cried all night and now I don't have the guts to go to another concert. Why didn't matt sing as well as he does everywhere?

  • @squishtish check with your doctor, you might be deaf.

  • @JohnnyCagePro Ya estamos con ofendiendoa las personas. Y que tal escribir algo simpático como "a lo mejor solo ha sido esa noche, te animo a que veas otro concierto, seguro que te va a gustar"... pff.

  • @squishtish Just as every great restaurant has a hiccup here and there, so does every great band. It was probably a sound issue, which is out of their control, and very common with live shows. I saw them a few years ago and it was top 5 shows of all time for me, and I see about 100 shows a year. literally. your first problem was leaving early. shoulda just smoked a joint. But leaving early, poor choice. Don't cry, get your shit together and see'em again when they roll into your town.

  • I Loved loved loved this!!! This band has a depth a lot of other new bands can't compete with.

  • Seriously, I love the National but this live just takes the fucking cake. You can hear and see all the subtleties of their music, it;s absolutely breathtaking.

  • this is going to sound very random, but the guy kind of sounds like iggy pop's new stuff (not the punk stuff, the avenue b stuff)

  • a few years ago we had the privilege to organized their concert in our club. Live and as a people are so friendly and special: D aaaa I can not wait to hear them again live.

  • That voice ... mmmm. :) . I just melt!

  • This version is better than the one on High Violet. It's more pure and honest.

I also liked it when he changed the lyrics to "go ahead, go ahead, and I'll try not to care tonight".

  • Are you Kidding -This is great but on the album its b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l man!

  • one word.Pants

  • What is the name of this song ?? Its awesome !!

  • @mickeyreal Runaway. Off of High Violet.

  • I didn't know tom green from stealing harvard was the drummer for the national?!?!?!?!

  • @MrCryptic55 lol what? he isn't? the drummer's name is bryan devendorf

  • @PhoenixSparrow dude it was a joke don't lose sleep over it

  • @PhoenixSparrow easy there bud...it was a joke don't lose sleep over it

  • @MrCryptic55 uhm, you, sir, are wrong. don't you just see it's john lennon?

  • he kinda looks like thom yorke a little bit ...

  • this song reminds me of someone who knows how to live.

  • @kesdig this song reminds me of someone who knows how to die...

  • is he suppost to be singing?

  • @jonnikall

Really? He has one of the most impressive voices I've heard.

  • @jonnikall Are you attempting to write?

  • @jonnikall hættu að vera faggi

  • @jonnikall his voice is one of my favourite voices. maybe your ears are defective?

  • great voice

  • 12 people were worried for the headphones

  • RUNAWAY... Great!

  • Some serious understated talent. Listened to the whole song with that feeling just before ya get shivers up your spine. Ya know? Still... they're no BillyBob Thornton!;)

  • Him and Stuart Staples together.... That might make the world explode.

  • how amazing it must be for them to play such amazing music that they have created themselves. it must be such an amazing buzz!!!

and what about the host - he has one of the best jobs in the world - have all these great musicians playing in such intimate surroundings that brings up the best in them - and is as if they are playing just for him!!!!

  • "we don't bleed when we don't fight..."

    I can't stop singing...

  • his voice is really amazing...

  • Love this song. Have never heard of the National 'til now.

  • why does every one compare every band/singer to Thom Yorke and Radiohead?

ya I get that people love the band and argue they were super influential but would stfu about them already

  • whats the name of the song?

  • @cartagio Runaway, from High Violet.

  • I FUCKING LOVE ADVERTS!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • What a smooth song in this mad world!

    Free and amazing!

  • He's like Thom Yorke is Thom Yorke were attractive and classy. Huh. Come to think of it, this sounds a little like Radiohead. Only sexy and classy.

  • sweet sound..

  • This Man is AMAZING

  • Wo0oW such a niCe Voice he have..

Beautiful captivating deep voice 2 ;)

  • Beautiful captivating deep voice.

I can imagine this playing in a very real, very sad, true story -movie.

  • This is "Runaway" from "High Violet," which is an amazing album by The National..though a tad bit slower than the album version....great song though

  • @kenobigirliz Are you serious? This version is much faster than on the album

  • excellent perform from u gyus!

  • Eyes Closed the whole time baby!

  • beautiful song.....i'm so glad they're normal.

  • @uzivljenica

    what is normal exactly :)

  • 11 people where looking for some justin beiber

  • @amadlook 12 douchebags

  • @amadlook facile, fatuous, and not appreciated by anyone who has past the 8th grade, seriously dude, u need either new original jokes or need to stop altogether...luckily theres the national to take my mind off ur shameless purveying of shit-absolute shit jokes

  • library flood. library=arcade

flood=fire. the friendly canadian band matt refers to in the intro cryptically

    is arcade fire

  • @yriccoh when does he ever say library flood?

  • @yriccoh

eh, he does not say library flood.

'what makes you think i enjoy being led to the flood'.

not 'library flood'. but you get an A for effort.

  • @RedRussianPedro he said "library flood" in the interview accompanying the songs, but not as part of the lyric of the songs, listen to the whole interview on Q tv

  • muito,muito bom!

  • Just started listening to the national. im so glad i have found another band that i really like. Simmilar to James. Great stuff.

  • adoro-te naninhos

  • The lead singer seems very awkward/clumsy

    but the song is awesome

  • Lol... I was thinking that this was something from the band Brand New.

  • exelente! do melhor!

  • cant understand a single word he is singing, whats wrong with the studio engineers these days, why dont they go back and listen to the songs of the 50's and 60's.

you dont need a translator you can understand every single word in the songs. The guitar is in the front of the mix, should be mor subdued.

  • @pleximarz well, Im talking french and... I can understand really well what he's saying...

  • quite a poet really, it's nice to find pop lyrics that make you stop and think, now and then

  • Quite a poet, really. It's nice to find pop lyrics that stop you now and then.

  • is that silverface Fender amps in the back?

    Deluxe reverb? Super Reverb?

  • song could be cut to about 3 minutes in the final version. it's lovely but too repetitive.

  • I definitely want this version of this song! The one on the album is good but this one is somehow more amazing.

  • How can 10 people don't like this song and this version? Human beings are weird.

  • what is the name of this song?

  • @spacemish Runaway

  • @pupsaa thanks!!!!!!

  • @spacemish runaway

  • @spacemish Runaway

  • His voice brings you deep inside your soul....

  • Seeing these guys at Glasto ... soooo excited!

  • @arceliahoder67 awesome. steal their music! way to go! >: /

  • We don't bleed when we don't fight

    Go ahead go ahead

Throw your arms in the air tonight

We don't bleed when we don't fight

    Go ahead go ahead

Throw your shirts in the fire tonight

  • This is the best song from their new album. Such a wonderful performance.

  • who is the one wears the glasses? i mean the one in blue shirt.

  • Just got back from Bonnaroo and these guys were AMAZING live! The clouds rolled in and it began to rain. The lead singer came out into the audience and fans were screaming the words right into his mic. Best performance of the festival! Check them out live!

  • Love them! Great lyrics, musicality, so great to have new music written so beautifully!

  • if u like feeling things from your music this is the band for u if u like just plain old background noise go listen to kanye west or whatever the fuck

  • This is dull.

  • my favorite song on High Violet. Seeing them live in Philly on June 5 and again in September in Pittsburgh. Just can't get enough of The National.

  • Amazing song. This version is disappointingly better than the High Violet one, where he sounds mildly drunk.

  • I saw them in Denmark last year and was fairly unimpressed. Nice band to listen to but its a pretty boring live show. Love them on a nice lazy Sunday reading a book.

But then again...the best live show I saw in Denmark last year was Behemoth...so that gives a taste of what I like at a live show :-)

  • @theeaglelord I think they were great! It was a seated venue, which definately made it hard for TN. But when Matt - kindly - asked everybody to stand up and walk up to the stage, the gig went into a completly different level! :D

Really looking forward to Roskilde Festival; a place they fit way better! :)

  • Great band. I think the singer croons a little more in the studio then live. The twins look a little like Hobbits!!

  • probably the best song on the album

  • @tekjansenV2 This! Great album, but the song really is awesome. Surely one of the most beautiful songs I've ever head!

  • sounds like the IndieVersion of Johnny Cash "Hurt"

  • I would like to be part of this amazing band. I didn't know them. They're really cool!

  • They sound so much better live.

  • @loyer258 HELL YES. one of my top ten shows. seeing them again in july

  • Just discovered these guys. They are a "must hear."

  • get these ads off my pantera videos!

  • @xxxIzekeIxxx get your pothead ass away from my National videos then

  • @obamaman4president you deserve these videos.

  • @obamaman4president its usually potheads who decide which bands are good and bad. i'm not even a pothead and i can admit that.

  • @opprime1 soooooo true

  • THE live concert really opened me up to it was so awesome i watched in twice. =) i order there cd also they made a new fan out of me.

  • I can honestly say I love this band, they do it all for the love of the music and are from Ohio!!! Awesomeeeeeeee

  • As someone in my late 20s, what I love about The National is that they make music for people in the twilight of their youth. It is not about the age of the performers, there are lot's of middle-aged men writing music for teenagers as well as performers who don't write lyrical content that is specifically aimed any any particular age range, but The National is the soundtrack to the quarter life crisis (even it is really is 1/3), the soundtrack to fleeting youth, all the beauty and the pain...

  • @krzhizhanovsky

Very nicely put, I'm glad someone else picked up on that. If all of us late 20 somethings are going to have our quarter life crisis, then at least we can have a good soundtrack to it :-)

  • what a fantastic band. just heard them for the first time awesome!!!

  • The National are a great example, much like Leonard Cohen, Guided By Voices, etc...where it's almost better to make your push for music fame around age 30 or so instead of age 20, because it saves you a lot of mediocre immature embarassing songs/interviews/etc that you'd prefer not to haunt you forever on Youtube. If you spend your 20's going from fair to great, and make your push around 30, the world will only remember you as great.

  • It's been a long time since piece of music has brought tears to my eyes for it's beaty and brilliance! I have just heard them for the first time today, and damn! Am I sorry! My CDs are increasing tomorrow! They say what is in my heart for many years. thanks National! And thanks for posting!

  • fantastic!!

  • The differences between this version and the one on the album..is like the difference between day and night. This version is incredible.

  • @1773louis

    Agreed.

  • They make my blood buzzzzzzzzz

    : D

  • I was feeling at a low ebb before I found this, I just let it wash all over me like a musical balm - I feel so much better for it

Shamefully, I've not heard this band before - I will put that to rights come payday!! Love it!GHFOG

  • i could listen to this man read a book..

  • @bazmac06 yay me too... well if it had music set to it and the words went along with it like lyrics...

  • @bazmac06

    hahaha what a morgan freeman

  • @bazmac06

    Why?

Are books especially boring to you?

  • @bazmac06 me too:-)...he could tell me that i was about to die and i would say thank you dude, for saying it so nicely...ps can we have sex, just quickly..heehe

  • @bazmac06 ADOROTE BOCAS

  • @bazmac06

I understand exactly what you mean.

  • @bazmac06 well i could listen to this man read THE PHONEBOOK (from A to Z)

  • High Violet should be the album of the year...it's that good.

  • I prefer this to the album version the song turned into... His voice seems more precise and the instruments are clearer...

  • Most refreshing band iv heard in a Decade....lovely voice

  • @evilkanival

Agreed... In a an age of music filled with high energy, electronic fuelled, fad music (some of it I love)... It's brilliant to have a band like The National.

Such a honest, laid bare, gorgeous sound.

  • Wow, this is amazing!

  • This a great song, just got High Violet a couple weeks ago & its fantastic! You're all in for a treat on Tuesday. this song is great on the album, sounds nearly identical to this version (I kinda miss those big cymbal crashes on the album version, though). "Sorrow" & "Lemonworld" are my two early favorites so far. Btw, if you pre-order on iTunes, you get 2 bonus tracks! I did it, even though I already got the album, that's how much I love this band!

  • hola,,,,alguien puede decirme donde puedo conseguir esta cancion,,,no la encuentro en ninguno de sus discos.

Hi,,,,where can i get this song please,,,album? please,,,

  • i cannot wait to see them at Royal Albert Hall in 5 days!!!!!

  • Haha it James Blake on the Trumpet

  • This is such a well writen song, and the perforamce is quite amazing really moving.

  • 9 thumbs down? Deafness is a terrible thing.

  • At last a good "pop" band that writes 5-6 min songs and has John Lennon as drummer.

  • I waiting with bated breath for their album to come out too! Hurry!!

  • Is this going to be on high violet? any one know which track this is?

  • This is "Runaway", which is included on High Violet.

  • @multiplemike01 ha thanks i was impatient, it was fairly clear when i got to the chorus

  • I hope their new album is a bit like boxer.

I really hope they have some stuff similar to Daughters of the Soho Riots and About Today. .... Oh, and cant forget "Son"

  • hey so i only have the album boxer and i like it alot. which one should i buy if i want to continue my the national collection?

  • @soccercrazy309 Alligator. Their most accessible album and still my favourite alongside Boxer. Try 'Secret Meeting', 'All The Wine' and 'The Geese Of Beverly Road'.

  • @anti18now What about Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers which I think is better than Alligator ?
