  • I used to practice solos and ritfs I heard from any instrument other than my own that I really liked, For instance, I play horn and say i like a piano or sax solo ,I would copy phrasing accents etc that are not necessarily comfortable on my horn and incorporate what I liked into my style. also another thing I would think of words and phrases when I was playing to give my improvs a more lyrical sound hope that is helpful

  • <3 god.bless.the.bari.sax.

  • Wow that's a great Bari sound.

  • Wow, the bass and drums were way too fast for him wtf... He had a great improv just they were rushing.

  • i wish my bari sounded this good...:(

    nice improv!

  • Bravo! More more!!

  • Very nice! Packed a punch, but remained smooth at the same time.

  • Great video. Oh by the way what do you mean by " there will never be another you" right by Bubba Bryant. I met him back in 1999. In my opinion the best drummer I know

  • Thanks for the improv class Greg. Very listenable and nothing to far outta the changes like some of us rookies stumble upon. The rhythm though, solid as rock. Cheers.

  • very nice. :)

  • nice man

  • incredible music! i loove jazz!

  • hey man thats some great stuff. Do you have any tips for improv?

  • Tips - listen to great players a lot! Listen with your sax in hand and try to learn things you hear. Ask people that play better than you for help all the time and steal everything you can musically and make it your own. Keep 3-4 players in your listening pot and rotate them every few months. 1 guy and you can sound like a lame clone. A few and you can develop a voice that is you while taking good stuff from each.

  • Man, that put me in a trance, I think my mouth was wide open too :-)

    sweet bari improv man

  • Is that Ronnie Cuber on bari?

  • HAHAHAHA!

Not Even close, but a Cuber wannabe!

  • Any suggestions for a alto/tenor/bari saxophonist such as myself? People tell me I have the potenial and most likely will be the next lead alto in Jazz band even though I play bari in jazz, any suggestions on to how to sound more dominant and powerful? By the way, I play on 3 size reed but I used to use 3 1/2 size reeds for a while but stopped.

  • If you want to play lead alto, you need to develop the sound you want for that task. I would listen to as much big band as you can find and listen to the lead player. Then I would suggest trying out some mouthpieces if you don't think you Alto sound is commanding yet. Meyer, Lackie, Yanagisawa metal - try some louder combinations and see.

You might find your sound is fine and it is just attitude and confidence needed to fill the chair. A teacher can be a big help!

  • one way you can is start playing on a metal mouthpeice it make a great bright sound.

  • amazing!! i wish i could play like that.

could use less bass in the mix tho...

  • Thanks Bass4Christ! Funny, a bass player saying less bass? Is it possible? sorry...

This track was the first song of the night and the bass was being adjusted as we played. It ends up mixed well at the trading 4's. :)

  • i'm a bass player... but i'm also a sax player... lol

  • HAHAHAHA! Pretty funny. My son was a sax player and then bass player too.

  • This particular style would just sound better with acoustic bass, not that the electric player isn't a good player.

  • A good upright player is always better in the tradition styles. Just not always available. David is a great player and most of the night tracked really great. It was just the mix when the bass goes so hot that it sounds wrong. Listen to some of other clips or the mix in the trading 4's and I think he sounds great.

  • Be fortunate you can play with the band. LOL. I bought and restored an old Bari Sax to get back into it (played Tenor for about 10 years after high school) and it turns out it is High Pitch A=457. Going solo I guess. :(

  • bummer...

  • It's not everyday I hear an alto/tenor player play jazz bari sax like this. It's gutsy with a nice edge to it. It would be awesome if you did a cover of one of Mulligan's songs. The sound does seem to get hot and it leans more toward an alto/tenor player sound at times but I am still in love with that sound.

  • Thanks for the kind words baritonesaxx! I love playing Bari, unlike a lot of other sax players, and try and do my best on it. I have to look thru the Mulligan material for a few suggestions - great stuff!

  • I didnt like the bari sax untill now....

  • The Bari Sax is an amazing instrument! It is just very different sounding and playing than the other saxes (and really big!)

Check out some of my favorites on Bari - Ronnie Cuber is amazing! He would be my goal sound and intensity on Baritone. There are lots of great players out there.

Do a little search on you tube or amazon and expand that love for the Baritone Saxophone a little bit! :)

    Thanks so much!

  • As an ex baritone sax player I just have to say: great! You give this marvelous instrument your own personal timbre, just like but at the same time different from f.i. Mulligan or Chaloff. Is it on CD? Greetz, Jos.

  • Just a club gig, not on CD and really not recorded very well, but good enough to throw up on You Tube to share!

Thanks for the kind words and so glad you enjoyed the clip!

    gvSAXBOY

  • You ae a really great player man, perfect sound! How?

  • Hey Spoof guy! It takes time to develop a sound and find YOUR voice on any instrument. I have a great sax and finally feel like I have a combination of mouthpiece, lig, reeds and set up on the horn to really sing. The process just takes a while and a real dedication to get there!!

Thanks so much for your posts and listening!!

    gvSAXBOY

  • Thanks Saxboy! You are pretty cool

  • Thanks SpoofHobbit - you too seem like a good one! Best of luck as you venture thru this musical life...

    gvSAXBOY

  • Thanks for the tips, Ypu also have pretty a mad hair cut

  • Thanks S Hobbit! I actually have a hair cut now - that was kinda a non-haircut! I changed he whole thing up a few months ago so hope you don't mind hearing the Bari Sax and seeing a guy with the clean cut! HAHA

    Keep listening and learning,

    gvSAXBOY

  • Thanks

What kind of mouthpiece do you have? And Sax?

My mouthpiece is a Yamaha 7c with some work

  • Very expensive Guardala handmade, silver plate, Selmer lig, 4 plastic cover reeds, Yamaha 62 Bari.

    :)

  • Wowm, I love his playing style. Not quite heard anything just like that yet.

  • Thanks again for finding me and posting!

    Blessings,

    gvSAXBOY

  • Great !!! Love your sound !

  • Thanks!

  • Hey FatMan, thanks so much for taking a minute to listen! I know the mix is funky. This was a live club gig a while back and the sound guy was messing with stuff and brought the bass up way too much for a bit. You can tell it is better by the trading 4's - part 2 - near the end. It was our first song that night...

Thanks again for listening and posting!

    gvSAXBOY

  • thank you greg, you rule. I even like this more than the other one. i can hear your monster tone! Just a little too much bass. But awesome!
