Lenin dismantled the workers counsels, neutralized the independent Soviets (which were the core elements of Socialism) and constructed a centralized authoritarian regime. That is not Socialism. Lenin was considered by many socialists as a counter-revolutionary which, in part, led to his death.

I am not educated enough to argue on about Cuba or Fidel or communism, but that doesn't mean that I am blind. I saw Katrina and then about a month later I saw a terrible hurricane tear through Cuba. The difference in the way the 2 govts dealt with those natural disasters was like the difference between hell and heaven or (for the militant atheists among us) between hate and love.

And... Competent scholarship has shown that Communism and Socialism were intentionally eliminated, in all but name, by Lenin to consolidate control in a central group run by himself. Communism and Socialism, as commonly defined, were never practiced in the soviet Union.

@davidgon98 Clarification: Communism and Socialism, as commonly defined, were never practiced in the Soviet Union after Lenin was done implementing centralized control. Lenin dismantled the workers counsels, neutralized the independent Soviets (which were the core elements of Socialism) and constructed a centralized authoritarian regime. That is not Socialism. Lenin was considered by many socialists as a counter-revolutionary which, in part, led to his death.

I am not educated enough to argue on about Cuba or Fidel or communism, but that doesn't mean that I am blind. I saw Katrina and then about a month later I saw a terrible hurricane tear through Cuba. The difference in the way the 2 govts dealt with those natural disasters was like the difference between hell and heaven or (for the militant atheists among us) between hate and love.

@lachionoise In Katrina there was emergency, much danger for the most helpless, and everything the govt did hurt the people's survival rather than helped it.There was no structure for helping but strong structure that made amazingly wrong/hurtful decisions. In Cuba the organization seemed intent on helping. and results bore that out. Quite a difference in a moment of intense need. Like between hate and love.

But Castro's motivation involving 17 African countries, was to help African people resist colonialism, particularly by the US, like now with Africom. Much of the US demonization of Gaddafi similarly stemmed from his helping African countries resist becoming puppet regimes serving US and European military and corporate interests. Castro was too wise and noble to sell out Cuba to the USSR, even when hard up!.
