kinda backward, it may have taken alot of intelligence and time to build, in this case not the hard part. thinking of how to get it to recognize any chair, even though they are very diff. from eachother, and so on is the really hard part.

The chair on wheels could very well have been judged as a table on wheels.

They probably just programmed it to 'know' chairs cán have 1 leg, where as tables never have 1 leg.

In other words: we've been cheated.

@RuudJH I'm pretty sure it rather judges the height of the of the object as well as other features. Of course it is simply programming in any case but with lots of it you can create something quite remarkable. I don't know how far artificial intelligence can go but I predict that we're not even close to the limit yet.

yes but how do WE know that distinction. Its getting the machine to do that which is hard. If we use the same type of clues ( i.e a chair is a flat surface at sitting level ) and asimo uses similar clues, thats not cheating, thats human intelligence!

@kaganesa Well, maybe cheating is a big word, considering this robot is quite an accomplishment.

My point is, the shape of the object at 6:36 could just as easily be a table. It's only the (presumably) soft sittingsurface that tells us humans it's probably a chair, and not a table.

Otherwise even humans cannot be 100% sure it's not a table.

If the robot has been taught to judge the texture and surface as 'soft', without touching it, it would be spectacular result.

@kaganesa I think is more close to animal intelligence. Any animal worth its life can do about the same (maybe not between a table and a chair but with something more interesting to them like favourite food or favourite toys. Y'know their attention is a little less tunable than Asimo's) Still, quite an accomplishment.
