If a field oal is blocked but never crosses the line of scrimmage it is a live football. That is why he was able to advance the ball. However, it is hard to tell if his knee is down when he picks the ball up. That's what makes high school ball great , no instant replay.
the kick was smothered at the hold...then the holder picked up the ball that never moved 6 inches while his knee was still on the ground..and stood there with everyone else, then ran after the coach realized the refs just gave him the game.
the play was over and so was the game..he was down
Ok .. someone says the knee was not down? Yes it was. AND the two kick blockers were touching him. So yes the play was dead after the block. Yes they deserve the heads up on awareness but unfortunately there is no TV replay for high school football. BAD CALL REFS!!!! You should be fired!!
@ebhock101 no, it wouldnt be. have you seen plays where there are fakes involving the holder throwing a pass? the holder can stand up with the ball, as long as he doesnt go back down on a knee.
@thenicknicol True, but in this situation its a recovered fumble, where if you recover it while on the ground, you can't get up and run with it.
I think it was very close, but I have to side with the "he was down" camp. At the 1:42 mark it looks like he starts to get up with out the ball, then goes back down to his knee to scoop it up a second later. You can't be certain from the camera angle though, so if this was college or pro and the call was challenged I have a feeling it would stand.
The one rule that we are forgetting is that the placeholder is not down when his knee is on the ground (if so the play would be dead when he received the snap) so weather HIS knee is down or not does not matter. And the most important part is that the whistle never blew from either of the 4 officials. Which is one of the golden rules of football.
go to 1:43. his knee is on the ground and he touches the ball. he doesn't have to pick it up for it to be down. if it were pro ball, there is no doubt it would be a touch down. but not in high school. i guess thats what makes highschool ball fun and exciting.
No question about it - the holder's knee was down when he picked up the ball. In high school football, that's automatically a dead ball. Poor officiating.
I actually designed this play that helped John Glenn win. The blocked kick and recovery happened just as we planned. Our next trick play will involve a pumpkin, helium and an over-medicated ref.
from what i have been told by officals is that before the kick the place kicker can have a knee down and move the ball. this allows for fakes, bad snaps, etc. but ones the ball has been kicked and blocked then the place holder is like any other player and if his knee touches the ground he is considered down. weather his knee was touching or an inch from the ground is just nit picking. the play should have been wistled dead, 99.9% of officials call the play dead to protect the player from injury
Ummm.........but dude.......his knee wasn't down. He clearly picked up the ball as he was getting up off the ground and his knee wasn't touching. About the only credible argument you have is them blowing it dead for forward progress while he was standing there.
After watching the video, the knee looked down but it is hard to see from up in the stands. The referee had the better view.
My main problem is with the line judge. If there was no whistle, why is he wlaking in from the sideline? I saw 2 players come onto the field. If it was a live play, you have illegal participation, 15 yards from the previous spot. If it was 4th down, the ball then is turned over to the receivers.
I was one of the few people who actually noticed the ball was in play but I didn't want to start any commotion and people be like, "Shut up kid, we lost."
A) he clearly didnt down the ball. the ref was standing directly behind him, he had a better view than the video did. even if it gets reviewed, its not indisputible evidence that he downed it.
B)i was there, i didnt hear a whistle, therefore the play isnt over. the plymouth players we too idiotic to realize that. play until the whistle blows. classic.
plymouth stop crying over your loss. post it on your school website. john glenn 33 plymouth 28. game.
ignorance is bliss....and blinding. next time when you watch the vid open your eyes. this video was used in an officals meeting in washington on what not to do.
Hey guys, next year, no one care about the win or loss....but this memory will live on forever for both teams as a truly funny ending. Had the fg just been blocked and game over, this game is completely forgotten by the new years start....now, it lives on - and everyone should be smiling by now.
I can remember a few high school games that just broke my heart...some of the other team members went on to play in the NFL - Bill Waddy - ....but now, he is an old man just like me - so smile about this as soon as you can....could have been called either way.
@frambesbuckeye They're not supposed to be, NOOB!!. If you knew anything about football you would know that a coach is not supposed to be on the feild durring a play. Maybe if you spent alittle time away from your chess team you would learn alittle about the rules of football. Ever hear of "too many men on the feild" ?? Fuckin nerd.
lol he was down when he picked it up. not a good call. and even if he wasnt down, the ref should have just ended the play when he saw the player stopped trying. what an asshole ref to pull off such a thing on those players who earned the win with the block. he interfered way too much
Regardless if you think the ball is dead, if the ref didnt blow the whiste then the ball is still live. As far as I know Highschool doesnt have instant replay or challenges. The refs made the call based on their best point of view and if they didnt see his knee down then he is not down. Stop Monday morning quaterbacking and Play until the whistle blows.
i know its a dead ball if you bring your knee to the ground while holding the ball, but hes bringing his knee up as he grabs the ball..i say well played
I'm English, and I've noticed from other videos that Americans aren't taught about 'What if' situations in a game. It was unreal how nobody on the field realised until the coach signalled!

canton has football for sure, they are a pretty well balenced school like salem (deffinantly not counting football), plymouth doesnt really have anything they lead in i dont think =( poor them
So MSUBEARNation I am far from a Moron I work for wlnd and helped in getting this video to the coaches and my work also posted this video on you tube we have publicty all over the US right right down to Jimmy Kimmel Live ESPN thanks to us! because other people are using this video with out consent you tube is pulling them all including ours So maybe you should know who you are commenting to when making statements like this.
The holder is scooping up the ball as his knee comes off the ground. The video is definitely inconclusive whether or not he had possession of the ball with his knee on the ground.
What's clear is that his knee is on the ground, then he lifts it slightly, then he kneels back down to pick up the ball and at some point during that kneel his knee touches the ground, but because of the camera angle, it is hard to determine exactly where his knee was when he gained possession of the ball.
There was no whistle, so it doesn't really matter. If the ref's thought he was down, they would have called the play dead. They should have kept playing.
The holder, who's knee is still on the ground when he grabs the ball, can pick it and run with it? You would have too many men on the field plus by hs rules down by contact right?
You know... if the other team had any sense, I would have screamed foul for too many men on the field for John Glenn because after all the refs said that technically the play was not over. Yet everyone on the side lines was walking on the field.
There were too many men for Plymouth too, which cancels out the penalties. Also if people would notice he is getting up as he picks up the ball, his knee is not down when he retrieves it.
OMFG! THAT'S MY SCHOOL! plymouth is my highschool. its part of "pcep schools" OMFG!!!!!!!!! haha. wow i love plymouth..ssame with my other schools: salem & canton.
salem won their first homecoming game in the last 13 years last week :) haha
is it me or does the holder have his knee down when he picks up the ball after it got blocked? It looks like his Knee is down and he should have been called down in the backfield. What a huge missed call by the refs.
and on top of his knee being down the kid that blocked the point is touching him while his knee is down. Thats considered down by contact in the "NFL" But in High School all you need is a knee down or fall to the ground. You can be on a 60 yard run with nobody even close to you in high school and if you fall you are down. I would be protesting this game also, just like the team that lost is. Just bad officiating
In NFHS rules, if a kick does not cross the neutral zone it is a live ball and may be advanced by either team.
If the ball crosses the line of scrimmage, it is just like a punt.
If Plymouth protests, the best they could hope for is that there was an inadvertent whistle on a loose ball play and by rule, the whole play would have to be replayed. Wishful thinking by the Plymouth staff.
Whats the exact rule for the place holder, if its a fake he can get up with the ball or do whatever with it. I think once its kicked then he is like any other player on the field.
how bout they play one with sound from the game so u can tell if they blow the whistle. cause it doesnt matter what happens its high school if one whistle is blown the plays over.
Yea im sorry i agree i dont like either one of these teams i mean come on im not even from michigan but #87s knee was down when he picked up the ball and this isnt NFL rules college and high school rules state when a players knee is down when in possession of the ball the play is dead. NFL rules which alot of people are confusing it with need to be touched by another player as well. Nice awareness but i feel like if they are going to honor the field goal rule they should also honor the down rule
This isn't the NFL. In high school and college, as long as a knee is down the play is over. When the kick was blocked it came straight back to #87, who picked up the ball while his knee was down. Game over.
this has to be the funniest thing i had ever seen i wish i could be there lol i also believe his knee was on the ground before he picked it up but didnt touch when he got it so props to you
how did they go from purple to red ?? wtf

So are kids down with a knee in Michigian. They are down by contact in my state, unless they changed the rules.

This should be shown to every team from Pop Warner to the NFL...don't ever go to sleep!

No?
hotgirljen99 2 years ago
There was no whistle, so it doesn't really matter. If the ref's thought he was down, they would have called the play dead. They should have kept playing.
DejectedPanda 2 years ago
The holder, who's knee is still on the ground when he grabs the ball, can pick it and run with it? You would have too many men on the field plus by hs rules down by contact right?

WOW! this is what everyone is talking about. why am i not surprised that Plymouth did this.
wrifraff 2 years ago
You know... if the other team had any sense, I would have screamed foul for too many men on the field for John Glenn because after all the refs said that technically the play was not over. Yet everyone on the side lines was walking on the field.
fistonet 2 years ago
There were too many men for Plymouth too, which cancels out the penalties. Also if people would notice he is getting up as he picks up the ball, his knee is not down when he retrieves it.

+1 Westland

Turtle100714 2 years ago
is it me or does the holder have his knee down when he picks up the ball after it got blocked? It looks like his Knee is down and he should have been called down in the backfield. What a huge missed call by the refs.

Lol ur right
jimhensley 2 years ago
and on top of his knee being down the kid that blocked the point is touching him while his knee is down. Thats considered down by contact in the "NFL" But in High School all you need is a knee down or fall to the ground. You can be on a 60 yard run with nobody even close to you in high school and if you fall you are down. I would be protesting this game also, just like the team that lost is. Just bad officiating
curtycurtl2 2 years ago
In NFHS rules, if a kick does not cross the neutral zone it is a live ball and may be advanced by either team.
If the ball crosses the line of scrimmage, it is just like a punt.
If Plymouth protests, the best they could hope for is that there was an inadvertent whistle on a loose ball play and by rule, the whole play would have to be replayed. Wishful thinking by the Plymouth staff.

sucks for them

Whats the exact rule for the place holder, if its a fake he can get up with the ball or do whatever with it. I think once its kicked then he is like any other player on the field.

that complex looks exactly like my field

thats bull...not only were there two coaches on the feild while the play was going on but so was half of the team.
gridironkid56 2 years ago
Ever hear of "The Play"? Durr. Besides there are more Plymouth players on the field than JG, so who are you trying to call bull on?

how bout they play one with sound from the game so u can tell if they blow the whistle. cause it doesnt matter what happens its high school if one whistle is blown the plays over.
america0is0screwed 2 years ago
its over i zoomed in and his knee left the ground then went back down what the fuck
america0is0screwed 2 years ago
Yea im sorry i agree i dont like either one of these teams i mean come on im not even from michigan but #87s knee was down when he picked up the ball and this isnt NFL rules college and high school rules state when a players knee is down when in possession of the ball the play is dead. NFL rules which alot of people are confusing it with need to be touched by another player as well. Nice awareness but i feel like if they are going to honor the field goal rule they should also honor the down rule
randy0544 2 years ago
This isn't the NFL. In high school and college, as long as a knee is down the play is over. When the kick was blocked it came straight back to #87, who picked up the ball while his knee was down. Game over.
bsalango1 2 years ago
this has to be the funniest thing i had ever seen i wish i could be there lol i also believe his knee was on the ground before he picked it up but didnt touch when he got it so props to you
