Great cover, listened to your version a couple of years back, never posted but I always liked it and came back to listen every few months. Good visuals as well. Thanks for recording and uploading.
@gmac072 jeez this song is ancient, you did a beautiful job including editing! the tune dates back to early 1961 along with several others he brought to nyc with him. that same year hedy west began writing '500 miles' which mirrored dylan's composition here.. but unlike bob's 'down and out' drifter, hedy's lyrics took theme as a universal message of struggle. the journeymen quickly recorded it, and in 1962 pp&m made it a classic on their debut album. hedy herself released years later. peace.
I am the child of people who move a lot for work. I have never spent more than four years in a single place. So I suppose you could say I have never really had a home. But I've come to realize that home is not the four walls in which you spent your childhood. Home is more than that. Home is the people you surround yourself with. So I am young, but I will never truly have to leave home, because I know that there are people who love me everywhere I go.
Back again. Such a beautiful song and video. Truth is, I see my own life somewhat in this song. I was 17 and from country in Mississippi when I left home. I am very succesful now.... Mom and Dad are gone, the new highway took our old home. I want to write a song about it all. Guess thats why I keep coming back.
@sherrillwallace By all means,Sherrill, write! Write as if all depends on the heart finally hearing your story. Write as is no one will hear but you. And when it all comes out, relax your grip and let it all go. Guy
@gmac072 Thanks Guy. What Sam Ewing wrote gives room for lots of though as I work through my song. I appericate that insight. Even so, my childhood was likely part of it...... poverty and the stigma associated with that left a burning in my soul that needs to be out for all to hear now that I have beat the odds and become successful. Again, thanks for these words. I still love your virsion of this song..... I'm sure you've noticed the watched list go up and up. Ha. Sherrill
Doug could you tell me the tuneing and if you have a capo on what fret. I really like this song for some reason and want to try it. I like the harp fill in. Sherrill
I had to come back and listen to this song again. It is very touching and stricks a familure chord with me. These pictures remind me of my childhood and I left home at 17 with no place to go. Click on my name and pull up "Where Corn Don't Grow" and see my story. I love your version of this song and I plan to try to do a cover. added to my Favorites. Sherrill
@socceree02 First off, you don't get to call me, or anyone, names on this thread. Secondly, the recording I heard and used is from a recording from the Gaslight, in NYC, in APRIL, 1962. That's EARLY Dylan.
Thirdly, this song does not appear on "Love and Theft" AT ALL.
Before you decide to call people names, it would behoove you to have your facts straight. It is abundantly clear that you do not know anything about this subject.
17 seventeen D days before "KALENDES" (1st. Ten Days ofthe Month ...) of JVLIVS inthe year 2761 Since Rome'Foundation (S.R.C. stands X Ab Vrbe [lt. town] Condita - A.V.C.).
The Romans had-n't the "U" Letter. To express the sound of "U" (like you) They wrote •V• .
Viceversa the Greeks wrote "Y", as capital letter. In italic "u".
Wow!!! You play this better than Dylan does!! Who ARE you?? Do you have any albums out? Do you play concerts or anything like that? Man, you are INCREDIBLE!! More, please!! More!!!
Tremendous job, both you MacKenzie bros. Doug, You have an awesome voice and the guitar and harmonica enhanced it beautifully. Guy, great filming - those photos were perfectly matched to the music. Nice pic of Doug, too at the end. Thanks for sharing
Thank you, Wren. Glad you liked it. Another version (a better one, I think) is going to be on my new album, "Lean Forward a Little", which is getting finished up right now. I hope Guy and I will continue making lots more vids. Thanks again for listening. Doug
Nice job! The guitar, voice and video. And then to end with that last shot was great. Couldn`t help but think " this is my childhood friend, how cool". Brian
I've ALWAYS loved listening to both of my big brothers play music. And now Guy has become quite the videographer as well (how 'bout leavin' some talents for your little sister?).
You have both continually amazed me at the rich and varied sounds one person can create with one guitar and one voice. I am sooo jealous! But I'm so happy that I can share this all the way out here on the 'other' coast. I love you both and I'm so proud of both of you.
Thank you Peggy-O from way out there in "Frenario". We're glad you liked it. Pass it along to anyone who might be interested. Doug has worked hard to get the thing together and from the first moment I heard it I felt it was something special.

@sherrillwallace While thinking about your desire to write a song "about it all", I ran across this thought:
"When you finally go back to your old hometown, you find it wasn't the old home you missed but your childhood." (Sam Ewing)

@sherrillwallace Sherrill, I tune my guitar down to C-G-D-G-B-D "G" tuning. If I remember rightly, I don't use a capo.

Hey, Moron... this isn't an early Dylan song. This is late Dylan.
This is off of Love & Theft... from 2001... just sayin'...
