Sorry Brits, but this guy did it right. I know it may seem crazy to eastern or most European hunters, but 400 yard shots are rather common place in the high wide west. Not that difficult for skilled shooter with a solid rest and accurate rifle. This guy's first shot connected. He then did what was prudent for elk. As long as the elk is standing, put more lead in him. He connected 3 of four times. My daughter dropped a 6x6 from 427 yard shooting prone off her pack this fall. Her first!
Need a little more practice at long ranges I think. I know its hard to turn down shots when you get a chance but you need to be confident on the first shot its part of being a resposible hunter. and dont use soft bullets at long ranges use ones like barns or nosler partitions they will penetrate deeper and the elk will know when they get hit with one of those. so get out to the range and practice next time. good luck hunting.
British hunters would hardly ever consider a shot at a deer at over 250yds, and even that is way above aorund the 150yd average shot, I tihnk this is irresponsible as you were not sure of hitting your exact mark.
Noticed by the multiple shots, it didnt know where it was comming form so froze up.
@moeboy435 I'm going to buy a new rifle soon and I was either considering buying a 308. or a 30-06. I maybe hunting some large game in the future so I'm thinking the 30-06 would be the better choice. I know the 308. is a great round but a little underpowered for large game. Any input on this issue would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

nice once again a 30-06 does the job. I shoot a 308 at elk and if i dont make a neck shot then it is hard to take them down over 400 yards.

1st, 3rd and 4th sounded like they hit meat, probably killed him on the 1st shot. Nice!
Love to know the rifle, load, optics, and state.

400 yards on elk with a 30-06 seems kinda far...what bullet weight did you use?
