if you save your microsoft word document(on mac) and go to school to finish it(windows xp) does it save and appear or you have to install microsoft word but the mac version?
why is there that extra tools page that pops up....shouldnt all of the tools like font size and stuff be on the normal word document? is that a feature cause that would be annoying to have 2 pages open for one document
I have a question, I am considering to get a mac, and Im deciding weather to get iWork or Office Mac 2008 or 2011. Im leaning towards Office Mac because I'm use to Microsoft Office for PC. I am a student , and my school uses PCs with Office 2003. Would Office Mac 2008/2011 be compatible with PC and if so, would it be compatible with Word, Excel, Powerpoint 2003? Thanks.
@damiantymkiw As a person who has recently switched to Mac, I'd have to say that iWork is just not for me. The learning curve is just too much since it is so different from Office. I can't figure out how to do anything, and the things that I have figured out are easier to do in Office. iWork is either less capable or I'm just stupid.
I've never actually used the Mac version of Office, so I can't vouch for it completely (looks good though), but I would definitely lean towards that.
@signupsigma No, it doesn't. iWork costs $79.00, but you can get a 30 day free trial from Apple's website to try it before you buy it. By comparison, Office for Mac 2008 costs $129.00 with no free trial that I know of, but if you buy it right not you will get a free upgrade to Office for Mac 2011 when that is released. They're both pretty good, it's just all up to personal preference.
Phew, alot of extra costs. This is the first time I'm looking into a Mac. And I'm doing it because they're the most environmentally firnedly compuer maker so far, according to Greenpeace 2010.
I would prefer to stay with Windows for familiarity and cost savings. Let's see if I can get a free copy from other people. the more I look into the MacPro, the more I'm convinced that I like it. It's the cost and compatiblity that concerns me, but I'm unfamiliar with it noise / heat.
@signupsigma Yeah, Macs are really expensive (seriously, $1200 for a laptop with a Core 2 Duo? C'mon Apple, let me at least get a Core i3 at that price).
But they're also really convenient and once you get past the learning curve (which is steeper than I expected) they're pretty cool. Concerning heat: I only have the White MacBook (circa 2009), but it can get really hot while gaming; for everyday tasks, though, it's fine. And the battery is amazing -- lasts all day even with WiFi and Bluetooth.
I work in the Microsoft Office environement though. What sold me on the MacbookPro is the highest praise from Greenpaace on the envrionment. But what turns me off the most is the cost in time and money the OSX would cause. If I can easily install Windows 7 as if it's a PC then, I'd be happy with the Mac, even at its current price. What would be better if SOny would just match Apple's environemental standards.
@signupsigma Yeah, it's pretty easy to install Windows. When you start up your new Mac, just search for "Boot Camp Assistant" in Spotlight and that program will walk you through the process. After you have Windows installed, just hold down the Option key while your Mac reboots to boot into Windows. Then insert your Snow Leopard Install disk to install drivers and you're done.
If you want to make it so that Windows is the default OS, just change the start-up disk in Mac OS X System Preferences.
@signupsigma And of course, if you just want the hardware itself without Mac OS X, it's really easy to install Windows on your Mac alongside Mac OS X, and you can even make it so that it will boot into Windows by default. You may find yourself missing a lot of things from Windows (I vastly prefer the Windows taskbar over the Mac OS X dock, especially when it comes to window management), but in the same vein there are many things in Mac OS X that I wish were in Windows (like Éxpose).
Is it easy? Just install Windows 7 like usual? Or do I have to do some IT electrical engineering, nuclear fission, Doctorate degree biochemical kind of tinkering.
I really wish the Sony F series was EPEAT GOLD and environemtnally sound like Apple's MBP. I would buy it instantly for out of the box Windows 7 and the gorgeous design.
Unfortuntely, it's not even EPEAT GOLD for a $1000 "starter" machine. This series can go a nosebleed high of $2000 or more. Sony brags that "100% of all models are registered EPEAT SILVER." Oh brother, even the $599 toshiba T235-S1350 is EPEAT GOLD. And sony couldn't get their $1000 and up to be GOLD. Pshhhhh.
@damiantymkiw Actually I take back my previous comment. There are some video tutorials on Apple's website that really help in learning more about iWork. There are even some tools in iWork that make it easier than Office. Office still has things that it is better at though, like making and editing tables, which I do daily. So really, just watch the tutorials on their website and if you think it looks better then get that.
Not worth getting Office for Mac, although after beta testing Office for Mac 2011, which is out in October, I can clearly say that is worth the purchase! VBA is back is probably the biggest reason to buy, but one thing I will say is Outlook on 2011 is over-hyped for what it is!
I have seen alot of negative views regarding this software... it has kind of made me think twice about buying a mac. Because I need to be able to create files compatible with opening with Microsoft windows for College and also on my main PC. So if I used iworks.... would I be able to open those files on a normal PC? Or is there another way I could create text documents on a mac and then open and possibly edit them on a PC? thanks
how ya doing jon? i just purchased the 13" MBP over American Express with the reward points. It is the 2.53 ghz version. Do you know if this one come with Microsoft installed?
Yes it works, but note it is a windows product... I don't see the need to buying a Mac if it just uses the same things that a computer that is much cheaper can do. Also, the loading on a mac takes much longer than on a windows. I guess, a computer program designed for that computer should be used on said computer.
Blah. I just use Word 2007 on my virtual Windows 7 using Parallel ha. I love Apple and my iMac but both products (Word 2008 for Mac and iWork) suck when it comes to doing work on a decent word processor.
iWork is more consistant with the mac feel (as it should be). My biggest gripe about Office 08 is it's constant patching and slow load up time. If they cut a ton of the bloat out of the app I'd consider switching. On the other hand iWork needs to over haul on the compatibility issues when opening specific office features in doc and docx. Both have their flaws but iWork... works the best for me.
I was really angry having bought this badly programmed software. Ms engineers should REALLY fix these things. Furtherly Off. mac looks shit too (compared to Windows).
There is no freeware or comercial software that can handle huge spreadsheets on os X (oo3, neooffice and iwork 09). Both office 2003 and 07 on win are SO MUCH BETTER!!
If you have a mac and have lots of work to do with ms office, don't hesitate and install windows with office 20007.

2007 hangs after the splash screen, I have a desktop and my uncle has a laptop completely different, his is an acer and different architecture, and mine is built up, same problem, I've tried on many computers. I just use 2010 Techpreview, works fine...
You do realize that the windows and the mac version are completely different?
Btw. I have tested the full small business version on my windows partition on my macbook pro and they work GREAT. The same spreadsheet is just flying like shit through a goose on windows. But the MAC office 2008 version is so bad, so lame and so badly programed, that I resold it after one month of intense testing.
Hey Jon, is it possible for you to show/review the notebook feature in Micro word for mac? I am torn between getting iWork 09 or Office and its based on taking notes for lectures in class. Thanks:)
I have installed a legal copy of office 2008. When i try to open any of it (word, entourage...) The send or dont send thing pops up and it closes. I bought this for so much and i cant even get it to work. ANY HELP?
don't be ignorant u can download it from microsoft's website whenever u feel like it and try out the trial so ask where he/she downloaded it from first.
so you mean if you save a doc file in office 2008 it can be readable in ms office 2007 or other formats?... can you convert files?.... i'm planing to switch to mac
Word is better than Pages. With Pages you can't choose what language you want to be writing in without setting your entire system to that language, which is stupid and irritating.
Excel and Numbers are almost the same (I think)
Keynote is better than Powerpoint.
This makes them almost evenly matched, my preference goes out to Office because of Microsoft Word.
Does microsoft project gallery come already installed on the macbook or does the installation CD come with the pack? Can one do without installing the office mac?
hey man...today in my university campus while using my office 2008 i got this error!office mac 2008 exceeds the number of users...this doesnt happen at home, or if i have my interenet wifi signal off while im in my school campas, but if im using there network, i get the error again!office mac 2008 exceeds the number of users...is there any way to resolve this?
All it was, was that rahmanroni said "so office 2008 for mac is the same as office2007 for pc? (except for the appearance?)" and no one had confirmed this and wanted to no if it was true, so I simply said can someone answer this, and then it just got stupid and I guess I must have said something wrong.
Ah, sorry about my previous comment. It's just the way YouTube's reply system works; takes some time before the replies get moved under the original post.
Yes, it is mostly the same apart from the layout and appearance of the program. They both share the same file formats so you shouldn't have much trouble transferring files between them.:-)
hows that template thing where you can create catalouds, brouches exc exc, hows that soooooo good, when you open word excel power point 2004 (for mac) it comes up.
like its not a seperate program like this one, i have office 2004, check out my ibook vid, it has video of me opening up word,
great review! quick question can i save a document on my pc microsoft word to a pen drive and open it up on the mac microsoft word or would i have to export? thanks to anyone who can answer my question:D
this was a good review. i personally use iwork '08 for my mac, and i love. i just get pissed because the rest of the world uses office, and it gets annoying having to export stuff all of the time. personally, i think that keynote and pages blow office out of the water, but excel is better than numbers, but w/e. i don't really use spreadsheets, so i haven't had as much time with either of them.
ummm.... word 2007 for pc is same as word 2008 on mac i have both of them. Your work one is budget bussiness word pack. don't say stuff which you don't have enough information to back it up.

I have major performance issues (it is comparable / slower than oo3):
Word is quite fine
Excel: You can't work with spreadsheets with over 2000 columns and 150 rows - It has fps issues, it stops responding, etc.
Powerpoint: just like excel, bit better. Presentations have serious fps issues. Effects suck due to shitty programming.

How I can remove the palette that loads with Office Word
and move into into the toolbar, I want to have it as similar to the PC version of Word. Is it possible?

so you mean if you save a doc file in office 2008 it can be readable in ms office 2007 or other formats?... can you convert files?.... i'm planing to switch to mac
joseeeeeph1219 3 years ago
Documents made in Office 2008 can be opened and worked up on by Office 2007.
Yes, you can convert files (such as the newer docx file format to the .doc format). Hope this helps.

I prefer office over iWork

iWork 09 is better, eaven for .doc files
TiLeNpWneD 3 years ago
Word is better than Pages. With Pages you can't choose what language you want to be writing in without setting your entire system to that language, which is stupid and irritating.
Excel and Numbers are almost the same (I think)
Keynote is better than Powerpoint.
This makes them almost evenly matched, my preference goes out to Office because of Microsoft Word.

Which version of Office are you showing in this vid
and: Where can you get this features for you mouse..you know when you click on something that it does this circles....

Answer what question? This comment and the replies above (or below) make no sense!
Eggyrocks1 3 years ago 2
All it was, was that rahmanroni said "so office 2008 for mac is the same as office2007 for pc? (except for the appearance?)" and no one had confirmed this and wanted to no if it was true, so I simply said can someone answer this, and then it just got stupid and I guess I must have said something wrong.
specfsrxc 3 years ago
Ah, sorry about my previous comment. It's just the way YouTube's reply system works; takes some time before the replies get moved under the original post.
Yes, it is mostly the same apart from the layout and appearance of the program. They both share the same file formats so you shouldn't have much trouble transferring files between them.:-)
Eggyrocks1 3 years ago
No problem!
thanks for the info, it is exactly what I wanted to know! Will be getting my Macbook Pro next week and looking forward to it!

great review! quick question can i save a document on my pc microsoft word to a pen drive and open it up on the mac microsoft word or would i have to export? thanks to anyone who can answer my question:D
toria01dan 3 years ago
this was a good review. i personally use iwork '08 for my mac, and i love. i just get pissed because the rest of the world uses office, and it gets annoying having to export stuff all of the time. personally, i think that keynote and pages blow office out of the water, but excel is better than numbers, but w/e. i don't really use spreadsheets, so i haven't had as much time with either of them.
again, great review

Why is it called Office 2008?
Dojan5 3 years ago
because it was released in 2008, microsoft needed the time to fix up any problems that there was on the switch to mac.
