I suspect that it is the alternating between sugars and artificial sweeteners that confuses the insulin response. In a Pavlovian sense, I would speculate that if *only* artificial sweeteners are used, the insulin response would be extinguished.
Unfortunately not. The taste buds sense 'sweet' and in some people more than others, this can cause the appetite center to signal the approachof sugar or glucose. This will cause two changes, one insulin levles will rise and second this may lower blood sugar levels, increasing the appetite center to crave more carbohydrate to raise bloods sugar again. Itis well established that artificial sweeteners can prevent weight loss.

Yes I agree - when I advise patients to cease artificial sweeteners they invariably lose weight.
