on the radar detector thing.... all the cops on the CBBT use KA band and there is a billion false alarms all up and down it for what reason IDK but if you have a sensitive detector its a cake walk to tell where they all are cuz they don't use pop techniques or laser.
@korntastesgood Uh huh, they have boxes built in which emit X-band which I stopped to look at when I rode my bicycle across the CBBT. They also now have the speed display signs which use K-band. All of the cops use Ka so as you pointed out, they are easy to spot.
Well unless you ARE one of the cops on it, you know every spot they hide. If you are not one of the cops, then you spent some money. Guessing by your screen name you are local and drive an Lexus. Since I have used EZPASS for 5 years and they started taking it on the CBBT last yearm I never get a coupon anymore, but I probably still have a few dozen around. Did you know the State Police get free vouchers for the toll for personal use? It sure is a lot nicer with the 2 bridges,
$12 EACH way. Well worth the $12 to me. Otherwise you have to drive up I-64 to Richmond, then I-95 to DC, then through the DC to Baltimore traffic, then you flip out. They take EZPass on the CBBT which is great.
you should have your mother drive it at night when it just looks like any other highway. Back when there was only one bridge and you faced oncoming traffic the entire length, it WAS scary.
They have several X-Band transmitters located along the bridges, I have looked at them close up and I guess they are used for traffic measurement. They don't use the X-Band for giving speeding tickets, all the CBBT cops operate on K-Band. In addition to the tunnel enterances, the cops also sit in the breakdown lane,

LOL...and do they still give you a certificate for a free soda, so that you'll stop at the gift shop/snack bar? ;-)
Sungold 3 years ago
I use to hav a bunch of those certificates but since I have EZPass, I don't know if they still give the coupons to cash payers.
vbdenny 3 years ago
I was there about 2 months ago, and yes they still give a free drink coupon.

Thanks for that info. I didn't know since it has been years since I've paid to drive over it.

No problem.

Also, aren't radar detectors still illegal in Virginia?
Sungold 3 years ago
yes, nut still less illegal than speeding.

The toll is 12 dollars? That's a lot to pay just to cross a bridge.

I just crossed it today and it was 31 degrees outside and raining. The high rise concerned me the most. Radar detector? I didn't hear anything....

I've crossed that bridge many, many times...

that was your radar detector going off wasnt it? Cops always hide by the tunnel entrances and exits to bust many. speeders beware
