1980. I was 16 and I happened to be in the audience. Now I am a menace to society because I prefer playing the trumpet than shattering windows. Am I real ? Maybe I got a lucky number.
Anyone know what the black thing is around the neck of his sax is? I'm not sure if that's where he's doing the synth work or if that's something there. I think it is because of the cord running from it, any information on what it is and prices?
Was Guardala making Mike's mtps by this time? It looks like a Dukoff, but then again it looks gold plated but that may be the lighting. What a f.....n performance, even better than the same tune from Heavy Metal Bebop.
@KennySaxophone - Mike B. is actually using an envelope filter. Also notice that he`s using an old contact pick up. That is the key to triggering the effect evenly over the full range of the horn I believe. He`s also mixing about 35% dry signal (via sennheiser mic) to 65% effect, I think. That question is asked him in a four part interview done at North Texas that you can find on U-tube. Truely one of the best processed sax sounds ever. R.I.P. Brother, we all miss you very much
Anybody that would post a comment such as "He's pretty good but he's no Kenny G." surely must mean that in jest or he's just posting comment to start a war. Let's all hope that because if he's posting this as a real view, then he must be tracked down locked in a room and forced to listen to ol' Kenny until he drops dead. That's my version of hell on earth.
@Timppa: his play is so DAMN FRESH and skillfull... I suggest you to listen to Trains or something else by Steps Ahead (sessions /w Brecker) or Time In Place with Mike Stern!
This is so amazing. I've been seriously thinking of forgetting the guitar and get a tenor sax since I found the greatness of M. Brecker few months ago.
You mean at 8:00 ? Before 8:00 he uses an auto-wah effect or something like this on his microphone. Then after the lick juste before 8:00, he switches it off and just keeps his natural sound, the same sound he had in the begining of the cadenza.
Sweet! I have this song on a cd -- "heavy metal bebop" -- what's amazing is that it sounds totally different, but equally cool in either place. It's a real testament to Mike's inventiveness and skill. I'm a musician and I think I can vouch for a lot of us when I say that during a solo on a given song, many of us rely on a pattern--sure we change it up--but if you listen to two solos side by side you can often hear a lot of similarity. Not so here. Hats off to you, Mike!
Man, he loves that diminished scale. And rightly so!

It is for a neck pickup in addition to the microphone...probably to use the wah wah without having feedback...

Towards teh end how does Brecker get those crazy sounds out of his sax? The sound quality is different. I can't tell what it is.
Bluejerra 2 years ago
hes doing it electronically, manipulating the sound that goes into the mic. you can see that hes using his foot to press some pedals.

Mike COMPLETELY broke the color line that before him, only blacks could play with soul and play the blues. I'm glad.
