I have to say that your version is pretty unimpressive. It seems your energy function is not as good as theirs is though. perhaps you want to try histogram. Also license?

I had the option of 3 different energy functions - one works very well for cartoon like images, and the other two work better on different types of images.
Don't forget I spend 2 days doing mine - they must have spent quite a time preparing the best images for publication.
Licence isn't decided - you can get a windows version, I'll probably release the full python code as GPL2 as soon as I get around to it.
