  • Sing this for your mum, and the law won. Its easy. The law won allways..

  • @thinkplay you fought your mom law , and , the law wooonnnn!! hahaahah

  • I WAS FAT WHEN I WAS 17 YEARS OLD.

I WENT TO THROW MY CAKE IN THE BIN, BUT I ENDED UP EATING IT.

I FOUGHT THE CAKE, AND THE CAKE WON.

  • History

The song was written in 1958 by Sonny Curtis, and recorded in 1959 when he joined the Crickets, taking the place of the late Buddy Holly on guitar.

  • i fought the law i won.

  • Wow, people actually trying to debate a dead man's politics who never really commented in public about politics. I guess we all need hobbies at some point. The Clash are great, but this movie "Rudeboy" is not the easiest to get through.

  • Apparently singing this with you band in detention 'cause you bunked off maths to do a band practise is not the best thing to please the head! Who knew?

  • Respond to this video... hay maw /

  • @thinkplay your prob right........god bless the clash..from scotland your mammy just lookin after u x

  • @halodude7171 hello i hate you

  • @halodude7171 doesnt match clash at all

  • Either listen to the Ramones or don't. It's clear you have no life if you spend most of your time ranting about how the Ramones are "overrated trash", you however are "overrated trash"

  • theyre so good live when i first heard this i tohught it was recorded for the movie rude boy but it isnt and theyre so good live RIP Joe Strummer you will be missed

  • all the guys look like Joe lol

  • I feel bad for kids today. They have no music to call their own.

  • Topper's drumming is incredible on this

  • That said, I love The Clash - especially London Calling onward, incredible breadth of understanding of musical genres and the artistic compulsion to take risk - always the true marker for an artist.

  • 3 people.....suck

  • nothing like them.

  • sex pistols WERE put together by malcom mclaren just like the monkees and ramones yeh right typical jump on the band wagon yanks

  • @steggy67 you're right on the malcolm mclaren part, but the latter is incorrect. The ramones performed a couple years earlier than the clash and the pistols. Joe strummer and Mick Jones have cited them to be a major influence to start in punk.

  • @steggy67 What's the point? The Clash were put together by Bernie Rhodes.

  • @steggy67

    clueless

  • Glad as a youngster I got to see them a couple times. Great band...

  • Ieu mah lagu karesep abdi atuh...

  • The Clash is awesome but, I like the original 1950's Bobby Fuller version the best.

  • @GunsOfThePhoenix The original was done by the Crickets

  • @GunsOfThePhoenix Really? or you just trying to be clever? I only found out that Bobby Fuller did it first when I was looking for words and lyrics for it, fair enough if you like the original, I prefer the Clash, shaken and stirred.

  • Had this song playing in my head today. I came into Utube to hear it again and SO LUV this live version. Thanks for sharing. May we never forget The Clash or Peace.

  • @MartinApayauq1997 The difference is, Avril admits shes not punk, green day claims they are, but they arent, they never were, pop punk isnt real, because punk cant have anything to do with punk,,,,,,,

  • love the clash

  • I wish I could've been there...

  • The only problem with this... my volume doesn't go past 11.

  • @elfalph 'past 11' what unit is that?

  • Fuck 'todays punk' (Gay Day, Barf 182) and any other poser bands!

  • @daniellem1990 Music changes. Don't bash on bands just because they don't sound just like the punk did in the 70's. At least those bands are trying to keep the punk spirit up. Rather hate on Kate Perry or some stupid shit.

  • a botch

  • Why does Green Day's live version have more views than the guys who wrote it (and were actual punks)? That shit pisses me off.

  • @AliceNChainz22 This song wasn't written by the Clash, they just created this version. But you're right about GDay, their live cover of this version kinda blows. It was originally a rockabilly song way back.

  • @AliceNChainz22 It was was written by Sonny Curtis, of The Crickets.

The original version was by them (post Buddy Holly), in 1959.

  • @athull08 i know his his real name was john. i called him joseph because he had a habit of phonin me up at all hours.

  • Wonder how many guitars he went through on each tour!!

  • I know how to play this on guitar

  • jooooder el tio lleva el baile de sanvito ito ito.......aooooooooooooaayyiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiihhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • i think green day sounds better. no offense to clash lovers, really! i think it's billie's voice that i like better.

  • check the Mighty Bo + Alex under you tube :

I Fought the Law - The Crickets post Buddy Holly cover

  • Dead Kennedys have a pretty good version of this song too

  • never heard this song done better. love the clash and the skinny singer beating the holy hell outta his guitar. R.I.P. joseph i miss ya mate.

  • @TheSandsie13 Agreed.

But just one thing - he wasn't actually called Joseph.

Joe Strummer was just his stage name. His real name was John Graham Mellor.

  • Rock n Roll mon!

  • Didn't think I'd like it...love it!

  • Here's some trivia - can anyone name the person who originally wrote I Fought the Law?

  • @athull08 Sonny Curtis!

  • @smurfsdontsurf

    Indeed!

So many people seem to think it was Joe Strummer, or Bobby Fuller. But no, the Original was The Crickets, 1959.

  • What made Joe and the Clash so great was sincerity.

  • I wish that I could relive every moment of every Clash gig I ever went to (which wasnt enough, but what would be good enough? every gig they ever played?).

The Clash were such a brilliant band, a once in a generation band who sit with the greatest ever, from Robert Johnson onward.

My only complaint was their always regimented image, I always found it too...forced, but they did look good in the matching get-ups though, so I can live with that.

  • and that wasnt in london england that was in switerzland

  • The best version!

  • this is WAY better than their recorded version on itunes!

  • @BOOMDIGIDYable because itunes sucks

  • Green day is punk. and they did not sell out. the evolved in their music. just like the clash did with london calling and combat rock, they moved away from the punk scene and expierenmeted with, ska, reggae, jazz, funk, alot of things. green day's early stuff from 1039 smoothed out slappy hours until warning was pure 3 chord rebbelious punk. they evolved and its not so punk anymore. and in every big punk documentary it mentions green day and the offsrping bringing punk back

  • @jverlander35 i agree with ya, to me, Punk was like the gigantic light bulb at the end of a very dark tunnel, it straightened me out, now i care about stuff

  • @intenzez yup same here, i didnt know what i wanted, i got to offended to easily, now its a big screw you to anyone that says anything about me and i'll do what i want how i wanna do it not caring what you think about it,

  • Wow what an improvement over the original recording, of coarse i've always gotten off on Clash, ever since when. I even picked up on a cassette of theirs,i also found another cassette at a bargain store. They weren't as big as all that here in Vancouver Cda anyway, not when it came to Top 40 radio. Punk bands never got exposed along with the regular run of the mill pop artists, it's too bad. I happened to hear of them on CBC radio on saturday evening....it was all punk music. THX4POSTING!!

  • well i'm sorry to shock you dannyboi435 but someone in the clash was gay

  • why does the law always seem to win?

  • What year was this???

  • Actually dude, only Paul went to art school...

  • Comment removed

  • yeah, you can't forget who started something, but you gotta remember that there's still good bands today

  • @BlitzkreigYYZ Children of bodom is about all ive heard, you know of any other good new bands?

  • @s03davis very true

  • I'll only embrace the present if I like whats playing in the present. I've heard whats been playing in the present and I think its shit. Sorry but I'm stuck in the past.

  • @Devilsblood so true, the only good stuff ive ever really heard of modern music is children of bodom, i mean they actually write their own songs, and their guitar solos are incredible. but they have also been doing it since the early 90's so does that really count?

  • @s03davis

I think so. Time has gone and comes.

  • @s03davis Well said, bro. Punkrock is not dead.

  • @s03davis if 13 people agreed it made great sense!

  • @s03davis 'Cept green day are traitor posers and the Clash are amazing, we need to keep on mixing and matching punk with other types of music without needing to look to the legends for guidance after all that is like conformity

  • @s03davis green day are shit on my shoe, look up Stiff Little Fingers if ya wanna knoe where they robbed their entire sound from..

  • @zacchang And you´re shit on their shoes.

  • @zacchang And you´re shit on their shoes.

  • @villadavid4ever some people just hate the truth

  • @zacchang And what´s wrong in being influenced by the Stiff Little Fingers? they dind´t stole anything so..

  • @villadavid4ever nothing wrong with SLF they were a great band, google johnny was by stiff little fingers, they were a real band with an original sound, green day are fake pop shit, you should be able to tell the difference mate..

  • @zacchang You´re just a moron who thinks that only old bands are punk. I don´t even fucking care how you classify them, but you´re too stupid to even make sense in your arguments. First you said that GD stole their sound frol SLF, now you say that they´re pop shit and SLF aren´t. Although, in your opinion, they sound the same. Fuck off, you don´t know what punk is, you only think that bands with no fans are punk..(not saying that SLF are bad..)

  • @villadavid4ever Hey nice tantrum mate, what are you a 3 year old?what does being "punk" mean then genius?

  • @zacchang Singing punk rock music or subgenres of it (like ska punk, melodic hardcore, pop punk, street punk etc). You can´t classify punk as a subculture, because that´s totally against the idea of it: being different.

And stop trying to be smart, it doesn´t work..

  • @villadavid4ever punk was about being creative, original and real.SLF had their own original sound, original image, original politics.original attitude etc.Green Day are a cut and paste version of SLF.They are unoriginal fake pop shit. You will get this at some point...and theres no need to be so agressive, were probably on the same side dude

  • @zacchang That´s your opinion. Nobody else thinks that they copied SLF. Also, you´re saying that GD are pop shit because of their new albums that 8 years old girls love. The new albums give the old albums a bad name.

  • @villadavid4ever I thought you were an 8 year old girl..

  • @zacchang punk wasn't about being creative. Punk was about being destructive and/or rejecting the world that was given to you. It is, for the most part, pretty simplistic which is what makes it so effective. If punk music were about creativity and intricate musical ideas then you would focus on that instead of what they were saying. What they were saying was the entire purpose of the music. Other than that I agree with you although I don't think GD are as harmful as people make them out to be.

  • Comment removed

  • @lightthiscity11 oh of course there were. Television is considered by many to be punk, although I'm not sure I agree, and they were extremely creative. What I mean is punk as a concept was not about creativity. Punk music is something much larger and many music falls into the punk category. The sentiment, however, is what distinguishes "real" punk from the rest.

  • @TheElMendigo wrong wrong wrong, punk was about being creative and having fun,and it was creative and it was fun,I lived inLondon in the punk era and was a punk mate, where were you in 1977?

  • @zacchang Fun was definitely a main part of it, but it was also about being against what mainstream culture represented. In 1977 I was probably listening to Blank Generation which for me embodies punk perfectly. Bands like the Clash and SLF were very creative, but that wasn't what they were about at first. Most of the Clash's debut is angry political music and the same goes for SLF's. Punk was about doing whatever you wanted. Reading my first post back, I did say some stupid stuff.

  • @TheElMendigo Punk was a day glo vision.I remember it like an explosion of colour (red mohicans!) into what had been a dreary mid seveties drudge.(think:London, cold, raining in black and white)The clash's debut album actually contains very little politics (poly=many tics=parasites)its mainly social commentry.SLF were more political.Green day are fake pop shite

  • @zacchang I'd have to argue with you regarding the Clash's debut. Maybe not necessarily political, but it is social commentary. "London's Burning", "I'm so Bored with the USA", "Career Opportunities", "White Riot", "Remote Control", "Complete Control" are all criticizing aspects of society which they disagreed with. And concerning Green Day, I have no beef with them. They actually make decent music, but I'd hesitate to call it punk.

  • This is the quintessential performance of "I Fought the Law." Nobody will ever top it.

  • Firstly can i say i absolutly love the clash, Joe strummer was amazing :) But also, why all the arguing over Green Day? Everyone has their own opinion and some Green Day songs do what the Clash did, in that they make a political opinion and put it across to the public. They're not THAT bad!

  • as far as punk music goes, I think these guys should be ranked right up there with The Ramones and the Sex Pistols. This song is anti-authority at its greatest. What a highly underrated punk band.

  • Ummmm...I'm pretty sure that they ARE ranked right up there with The Ramones and the Pistols...as a matter of fact, as far as actual "ratings" go, The Clash are ranked higher.

  • amen to that, The Clash, The Ramones and The Sex Pistols were the leaders of a lifestyle, not just a music genre. They gave a cause to the kids who felt like outsiders, and united the punks of their day and age.

  • @BlitzkreigYYZ now only if some band could step up and do it today..

  • @ripthisjoint908 There is a Clash Tribute band who I saw about 2 years ago, they were f'ing brilliant, played nearly every song the Clash played, and they played them well, if you get the cxhance go and see them, they are called "Take The Fifth", not sure if the fifth is 5th or fifth.

I know I'm getting old now, cos I still listen to the music of my youth.

Cheers to Clash Fans everywhere x

  • @BlitzkreigYYZ Too bad The Clash were the only band of those three who had any talent. The Ramones were a bunch of disgusting pigs who couldn't play their instruments to save their lives and The Sex Pistols were just a manufactured band to capitalize on the movement, the punk equivalent of The Monkees. Go figure.

  • @cheifguggletram Are you retarded first of the Ramones guitarist Johnny Ramone is ranked #16 of the top guitar players off all time.

And The Sex Pistols were the ones who invented the Punk attitude and the punk movement, they weren`t manufactured by anybody.

Check your facts before you coment douchebag.

  • @cheifguggletram. Fail. The Sex Pistols were absolutely manufactured by Malcolm McLaren and Bernie Rhodes; the initial concept sprang from the French "Situationist" movement. Concept was to create controversy, make it fashionable and sell clothes by appealing to teenage human nature - rebellion fueled by hormones. The establishment of the London "punk ' scene was never more than a cynical ploy for money. In the end, McClaren stole Rhodes' ideas. Rhodes then 'assembled' The Clash.

  • @talkingwall

    BOOOOrrriiiinnnngggg!

  • @hatleman2 Well Iggy Pop, MC5, and the New York Dolls/Johnny Thunder were doing all that even before the Ramones. Iggy Pop and MC5 invented punk. Not the Sex Pistols.

Johnny Ramone is the "16th best guitarist" because he "invented" pop-punk, which is far from the truth. The Ramones are overrated trash.

  • @cheifguggletram i think you're not right, but even if you are don't care aout it, just enjoy the music. it is what punk is all about

  • @BlitzkreigYYZ Well the Ramones were rebublicans haha

  • @1337ontoast Joey Ramone wasn't, Joey was very liberal and did political side projects.

  • @1337ontoast Joey was left wing where as Johnny was right wing.

  • @1337ontoast only johnny ''the cunt'' Ramone mate...

  • ADD much? lawl great song.

  • brilliant!

  • they actually had to dub this as when they recorded it there was no sound.

  • Correct me if I am wrong but isn't this version on the From Here To Eternity album?

  • I was lucky enough to catch a couple of the shows the Clash did at the Lyceum in October of 81. The thousands of gigs I've been to before and after that time have never had the energy, emotion and out- right coolness of those shows.

I saw the Clash guys in all their different groups after, but they never had what they had back at those Lyceum shows for me.

(we even ended up missing the last trains, and had a long walk home)

  • The Clash are prob one of the best bands ever and a lot of todays bands site them as influnces. They sang about injustice and justice for all the working class. I met Topper a few months ago and he is still a legend. The Clash forever.

  • Wigan Lancashire salutes you

  • green day is good, but they r not totally punk. dookie and nimrod were awesome, but american idiot was a big mistake. it's stuff like the ramones and the clash that are real punk

  • I don't listen to Green Day, but this whole who's punk and who isn't argument is old. In fact, The Clash experimented A LOT with different kinds of music, so are they 100% punk... I'd say no, but they sure are good and that's the only things that matters. The only band that matters... The Clash. I think todays bands try to be punk, like it's some kind of defined sound, like Green Day, and what happens is they just sound generic and boring. That's why I don't like today's "punk." It's shit.

  • The Clash, just copy , The Ramones, but in a good way!

    TheClash - fuck yeah!

  • I was at this show. Give 'em Enough Rope had just been released and man was it an amazing night.

  • Fuckin' lucky bastard ! I salute you with respect man.

  • joe strummer rip.

    fucking awesome stuff.

    green day are shit.

  • u got it rite there mate,i salute u

  • well said

  • thanx.

green day are a pile of shit, compared to the clash.

  • People need to listen to and maybe appreciate the classics before they can even compare it to todays music!!!

  • Green Day wouldn't have even covered this song if The Clash hadn't done it first!!!

  • that was the most dumbass comment ive ever read

well duh!! u fuck!! u cant cover something that doesn't exist thtas why its called COVER

  • no flesongo you are the dumbass

the clash version is a cover of someone from the 50s

    DUMBASS

  • The Bobby Fuller Four originally did 'I Fought The Law', The Clash then covered it and added in some originality to it by making it more 'punk' and this is where Green Day got the idea to cover the song. The Clash were a HUGE inspiration for Green Day. Green Day is my favorite of the two, but The Clash had huge impacts on punk rock and alternative music today.

    -GREEN DAY is GOD-

  • Green Day are a joke

  • Green Day is one of the largest and most influencial bands in the world right now. They are rock legends and are today's modern Clash. if you call Green Day a joke, u are outta ur mind.

    -GREEN DAY is GOD-

  • Green day is a joke and they are not god.

  • no they are not. again, they are one of the largest and most influencial bands in the world. they ARE todays Clash. no doubt about it. and they obviously arent god, its just my sig, so dont make a big deal about it.

    -GREEN DAY is GOD-

  • better than u

  • i know

  • ur a joke

  • Green Day is nothing more than todays "POP (im ashamed to used this word describing green day) punk" band of the week

they are pretty good, there old stuff that is, Dookie and nimrod were pretty good but american idiot was shit! 1 or 2 songs off that album were alright for a while but it was soooooo over played its rediculous

REAL punk and Oi! is where its at kids

  • green day is PUNK!

  • HAHAHAHAH green day isnt punk! you want real punk bands? try The Damned, GBH, the virus, sex pistols, the varukers, discharge...those are some fucking punk bands, not fucking green day!

  • i don't care what you say cos everyone has their own opinion ,

  • Greenday are the definition of sell outs

  • haha what do u mean sell out, u mean selling a lot of albums?... isnt that what being a band and making music is about... being heard. anyone who says they dont want fame and fortune is full of shit

  • @Xanth016 oh, Strummer was full of shit was he? He was never interested in money, even when he had million copy selling albums he caught the bus everywhere, and lived in a small house in London, so stop talking shit you uneducated cunt. Green Day are an embarrasment to music, calling themself punk rock, then standing there wearing fucking eyeliner like a bunch of queers.

  • @dannyboi435 I can agree with you that Green Day sucks, but Mike Ness is one of the greats despite the fact he has the eyeliner. In fact, he's probably the only one who can pull it off.

  • I love Green Day but The Clash has much more energy i love it! Look it's a norwegian flag XD

    .

  • Ha ha ha ha ha ha you kill me coolnesstothetop ...you r joking right

if not go back to watching Britney..MUG..

  • Green day isnt even punk fuck off bitches.

  • who are u to say whats punk

  • i prefer greendays version. this is shit. no offence to anone who likes them, my opinion so dont reply.

  • i clash sempre i migliori.....nn come quei poser dei green day

  • They got a Norwegian flag behind the stage

  • i migliori.

  • I don't know about Billy Joe whatever and with a name like that he should be covering Willie Nelson tunes. I do know of Green Day and their sound a they are a toal ripp off of the punk bands of the late 70's. That my opinion. I may be wrong but thats what I think.

  • Back then they called it punk. To me it's just ass kicking Rock n Roll! PS: I FUCKING HATE GREENDAY & their little shit lead singer. He thinks he's british and it's still 1977. Hang it the fuck up!

  • Lol... If thats what u thinks about Bille Joe Armstrong, then u dont know enything about him and Green Day. PS: Green Day's cover owns The Clas.

  • I love Green Day, but they cant beat The Clash with their cover, no-one can.

  • Cool, that u think Green Day is cool.

Sorry for what i said, The Clas made the song and it is a good song. !!Sorry!!

  • it was actually written by buddy holly and first recorded by sonny curtis and the crickets i believe

  • @kill4llyourfriends Green Day sucks. Thats gay punk. This is the real shit.

  • in 1977 he would have been 5 ;-)

  • I love diz

  • FUCK YOU fme8 THEY ARE JUST GAYS!!!
