I sometimes sketch with charcoal although I use pastel as well. I paint thick enough that any dust is absorbed or covered with my paint.

Are you sketching with charcoal?

I usually use two ore three different colors of hard pastel . That way, when the underdrawing is painted over the pastel pigment is absorbed into the paint without graying the colors -not that you seem to have that problem.
