There are some truths and also Many Lies in this documentary;
For example they are trying to enforce the idea that happy equals docile, but the truth is the exact opposite: a sad man is docile; A happy man doesn't need anything from anyone and is independent, but a sad man listens to everyone hoping someone will finally show him the happiness he has been searching for. Also in the scene where shadows are flashing on a face, that is full of subliminal messages, advertisements.
@EmpathicGabriel In one of these subliminal flashes actually a phrase from a poem is present, it says: "They fuck you up, your mum and dad" and it is from "This Be the Verse" sick poem by PHILIP LARKIN. I think this is after making the viewer argue a lot with his parents and also is trying to make you not to have kids because the last quote from that poem is: "Get out as early as you can And don’t have any kids yourself". Plus a lot of other advertisements of movies and products.
Based on what we know from history, I think it would be more accurate to say Roosevelt & Co. still believed Americans were irrational consumers driven by desire--but he wanted them to THINK they were seen as sensible citizens who could take part in the governing of the country. For better or worse, the people were still being manipulated. Notice, even in this video, the tone of background music changes when Roosevelt comes on to the scene, making us feel, "Oh, here's the good guy!". Nice try.
i don't like the bent of the narration.it is saying that govt can incorporate the wants of the citizens but business can't.it fails to explain that govt doesn't give a shit what the public wants and acts only to maintain and further its own power, and that business colluding with govt is NOT capitalism. its called CRONY capitalism, which is what we still have today.if it hadn't been for the bank bailout of 2008, that is,govt intervention, those parasitic international banks would have gone under.
@ElenaXVI I'm not sure, I also heard Noam Chomsky talk about this, and he said something of that sort: The public relations industry was named that way because of guys like Hitler..."
@TVPActivismIsrael Yeah Edward Bernays named it "public relations". He was trying to lose the word "propaganda" because the Nazis used it. It worked, we now call propaganda "public relations".
I rather call it the century of the useless selfish.
I guess it's just a coincedence that this pointless lifestyle really started to devellop afther the financial terrorists (bankers) of this world had their grip on the US dollar again with the creation of the FED in 1913...??
It also wonders me what would have happened had either the 3th Reich or the Soviet Union had their way, they had diffrent plans with society then turning it into a pointless 'unsustainable' consuming cauldron.
By playing on the sub-conscious of the human mind through propaganda, and with the main focus being on the "mass mind" as some call it.
See, it's like the media today, they convince people through fixed polls that *insert subject here* is the opinion of the majority of people and thus drag in an insane amount of people that are inclined to follow mass opinion, thus making it de facto the new general opinion...
31:06 - 31:12 The epic statement in this section and many more, i am curious because i take marketing/PR and have never heard of the name bernays which should really be a feature of the learning outcome we learnt about the industrial revolution but not the people behind it. Its always good to seek out other info huh? I am so watching the rest of this. Thanks for the clips.

It is obvious that Roosevelt's way was working greatly and that that kind of democracy was functional and everyone was happy......except from the corporations....they wanted excessive profit which only comes from excessive irrationality....SO PEOPLE IT BECOMES PAINFULLY OBVIOUS......WE ARE IN THE SAME STATE AS THE WORLD WAS BEFORE WORLD WAR 2.....BUT THIS TIME INSTEAD OF FIGHTING EACH OTHER WE NEED TO FIGHT THE CORPORATIONS...ONLY THEN CAN WE CREATE A PEACE AND STABILITY ALL OVER EARTH !!!
@MultiMiracleMan America under Roosevelt wasn't as glorious as Curtis tries to portray it. Read the article "Great Myths of the Great Depression".
While one can blame corporations for "forcing" the public to buy things they don't need it is the public that ultimately decide whether or not they buy the products in the first place. If there's anything to be learned from this documentary it's that the too many people make decisions based on emotions rather than on reason.
@Phi1point62 And that's why they use their emotions in excess when it comes to buying....they're just trying to keep the balance between emotion and reason...also I believe that there are very few people today in the civilized world that make decision independently.....even if they think they do that's not true...they just think what others taught them to think....the psychological knowledge and the psychological war they make everyday on us is beyond any limit..
@Phi1point62 They try to drive you crazy with all that advertising and stuff.....it makes you wonder in what extent it is your personal decision instead of a way of life that you have been forced to have and it is the only one you know as long as you live in the cities and the civilised world
@MultiMiracleMan If you wanted to make society a better place then you have to figure out how to convince people to make their decisions based upon reason rather than emotion.
On a side note I bought my last mobile phone six years ago.
@Phi1point62 I have a mobile for that long too...I said that only to let you know who you are talking with....I mean I agree with you and I believe people should find the balance between reason and emotion.....because either one of those poles isn't good for you if you are superlogical or superemotional.....but I believe people today are closer to reason....they think like robots....their whole life is based on money and stuff and their personal needs and emotions are put aside...
After watching this, I can only come to one conclusion personally......People or the masses if you'd like respond to the same way you treat them.....if you treat them as rational and sensible beings who can take an active part in governing their countries like Roosevelt did then they become exactly that......but if you treat them as irrational, stupid and dangerous animals who need to be controlled then they also become exactly that...
Many thanks from a Brit living in Germany. I think of Freud often when I walk the streets of Vienna and of Crowley when I walk the streets of Cambridge.

I don't understand. first they said german use of propaganda made Eddie change the name to public relations, but that was before Hitler was in power.

@TVPActivismIsrael Perhaps they meant the Germans in WW1.
