Why can't they bring this system back? It seems if the government can pull $700 billion out of a hat to rescue the rich bankers, they could throw a little toward a project like this.
One problem is that, to rebuild this system, you would have to demolish entire suburban neighborhoods, comercial retail complexes and even public schools. If you study a map of the line, and examine it using satelite imaging, you'll see that all of this, including high tension electrical lines, have been built right on top of the right-of-way.
