I love Shostakovich about as much as any composer and the original piece is beautifully dark but I can appreciate and enjoy this new texture and timbre that this sound brings. If you don't like it then good, if we were all the same then humanity would still be in the caves or dead by now. I'm glad that everyone here has a different reaction, there is more conformity today than ever before but these differences show our humanity. I love this video/excerpt btw.
Man there's a lot of hate in these comments. First of all I am a Scottish musician and not American and I hate conformity in all ways. I appreciate the technical ability of dream theater and love their music in general because it does what music should do, puts across emotion. I don't think that they are at all like the classic prog bands that I love and grew up to such as yes, rush, elp, king crimson and many more. I see that as a good thing, they have taken elements from those who inspired
The world can listen to CXB forever and not hear anything but the low impact NOISE of the buzzing of a MILLION GNATS. How truly tragic to go through ones life vainly trying to attach himself like a barnicle to former associates that have forgotten about this LYING THIEVING sack of shit YEARS AGO. Do yourself a favor, "Chris" and end it all, no one will notice but maybe you'll achieve a certain peace of mind once you assume room temperature
@neptuneskys This REALLY sounds like that loser Harry Stuckey. He's always stalking me b/c he's jealous that I don't have to drug girls to nail them, and everyone says I'm a genius but Harry can only rehash jimmy page licks poorly.
No wonder he steals others' money so people wil think he's not a loser.
I'm not the FOOL that LIES about his age on the internet but what do you expect from a pathological LIAR who wouldn't know the truth if it BIT HIM ON THE ASS
@neptuneskys Is this HARRY STUCKEY, the guy who can't get laid without drugging naive girls? Everyone says your parties are lame (which would explain why you need to use heroin to rape girls.)
1. As a musician who's toured America and Europe, it's sad to say that the British are TWICE as smart as Americans are. It ain't coincidence that most of our fave bands are BRITISH rather than American.
Dream Theater grew up in American suburbs, which means they had little intellectual challenging or cultural exposure.
I grew up in the suburbs and it creates zombies.
This veg upbringing shows in their music, which I find to be not very original or unique, b/c America preaches conforming.

3. Millions of musicians have chops, but it means nothing unless there's more than that.
DT's album art just looks like they're imitating the 1970s bands and Hipgnosis. That's not cool.
The way they dress is also anti-creative, anti-fun, and so on. (Sorry, but the way you LOOK matters if you're going ON a stage. You're asking me to LOOK at you.)
They aren't very smart guys. Battles are smart guys. Have you heard them? Look up "Mirrored". (I dislike that their pieces get too repetitious.)
explain why everyone that has ever known you and took pity on you eventually walks away shaking their head and saying to themselves how done they are with you. How you perceive random acts of kindness as a sign of weakness that you immediately start angling to take advantage of.
explain why every girl you've been with from Simone to Rev Skank to Delfino sez you are the most emotionally needy and pathetic lover they'veever been with
BUT MOSTLY? explain those MAN BOOBS! ewwwww they are so GROSS
@worstfuckfaceever WOW. The crack has you fully in its grip. (There's not even an evil motive for you to post on this video, CRACKHEAD!) Everyone, beware a CYBERSTALKER / crackhead / child porn fanatic troll named HARRY STUCKEY aka VOX LUX. He has 25 youtube accounts to stalk people. Yeesh. (And sad for him everyone knows I dumped Simone, Rev Jen, and Delfino. Hey ya 55 year old crackhead. Get off the computer and get a life. You are just shriveling up and dying.)
Actually, the original movement is that and even more: it's wild, primitive, heavy and weirdly demential. That'd not sound too bad if a rock or metal band (or even Dream Theatre itself) takes the matter seriously and makes a real homage to Mr. Shosta playing the complete quartet, XD
Hey!!! Where is the rest of the piece???? XD XD XD XD XD
I think all of we agree that Mr. Shosta's 8th Quartet is a masterpiece per se. However, being already frank, sometimes I've been wondered how this movement, in particular, could sound as a rock or metal piece, hahaha.
Why does this need to be "greater" than the original? It is merely different and is the product of a younger generation that considers the fusion of wildly different ideas and media to be an art form in and of itself. Personally I think DSCH would approve of these derivative works, he himself borrowed heavily from the popular music of his day, not to mention Bach and Stravinsky.
I don't care if Shostakovich would approve or not, this completely ruins the piece. People are simple-minded and think that adding electric guitar/drums to anything makes it cooler. I doubt any well-seasoned musician would find any enjoyment in this. If anything, Shostakovich may have found it amusing that someone took one of his works and did this, but that doesn't mean he would like it.
you have great ear to put these things together, even your other videos mixing DT with Hip Hop, not only funny, but really, it shows you have great ear for music and abstract thinking

2. I've been searching for 20 years for new "prog" or "art-rock" bands but all I find are those who merely imitate the past.
It's really sad. Where are the INNOVATORS?
DT sound to me like imitators. They practice and shit, but they don't have either the bold innovation needed or iconoclasm.
They also don't have that special CHEMISTRY that makes great music. (millions of bands imitate Zep, but none can capture that special chemistry).
I've listened to tons of DT and found little to like.
