I agree sounds like Theory totally ripped off the riff and then tweaked it just so slightly at the end of the riff to make it "different" so they could say they didnt rip it off.
I looked this up because I had the same suspicion of the song and someone had already made a comparison video lol.
I used to be a TOAD fan, but not anymore. I liked their first two albums, and as far as I know they didn't rip anyone off on those ones (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong about that) but when I heard songs off their last two albums and realized they stole other bands riffs/lyrics I got really pissed off. Listen to 'The Bitch came back' off their new album, they stole the entire chorus of 'The Cat came back' with the exception of one word. Check it out for yourself, you'll see what I mean.
also theory of a deadman sounds nothing like nickelback. nickelback is fucking pussy music. i respect them because they got me into rock and started my interest to be the metal lover i am now but i would never listen to them now.TOAD however is a great band
@PureHardRock910 Dude... if you think Nickelback and TOAD is metal... you don't know what metal is. Go listen to some Megadeth, or some Iron Maiden, or some fricken Times of Grace. You have no idea what metal is.
@SuperiorAssassin i never said they were metal especially read my comment i clearly said "Nickelback is FUCKING PUSSY music" and i know TOAD isnt metal. Iron Maiden sucks ass and who the hell is Times of Grace
I never noticed this until today. i had only heard the cult song like 3 times in my life (im 15) but my music history teacher pointed it out today and i thought about it and i was like holy shit no way. I dont think it was intentional tho they probably thought of it not realising they werent making it up they were remembering it. Oh well not their best song anyway. I am a TOAD fan tho i dont think their music is unoriginal they just screwed up with this song
@PureHardRock910 Bands don't just 'accidentally' think of the exact same riffs in the exact same style with the exact same pentameter. There are 40 million examples of this kind of riff-ripping in music over many years.
They are similar but when you play right next to each other i think they are different enough to be an unintentional copy. The rhythm is different and if it were a rip off then i would think those would be more similar. Not to mention if they were going to rip off the Cult then you'd think they'd use a little more of the song not just the riff.
Im not a huge TOAD fan so dont flame me. Just speaking from muscians standpoint.
Anyone with even the slightest musical training can tell that this is pretty much a dead on ripoff. We live in a musical wasteland, people. 90% of todays "artists" are too lazy or untllented to come up with their own stuff, so they simply copy and paste the classics and make it their own, changing it only ever so slightly as to avoid a copyright infringement. And the sad truth is that the masses who don't know any better lap this shit up like antifreeze at a petting zoo.
People, I am a music major. Please refrain from using the terms "octave" and "harmony" to make yourself sound cool if you have no idea what the fuck those terms mean. It just hurts your cause.
As soon as I heard it on the radio, I turned it off and started humming the tune in my head trying to figure out what "other" song it was and finally, I realized it was Fire Woman! I knew other people heard it too! I thought it was VERY blatant. You'd have to be deaf not to hear it!
Do you have a grudge against Theory of A Deadman that makes you just want to bash them on anything. Get a grip dude relax. There are alot more songs than this that sound very similar. This just happens to be one of them. Chill
Duh, ive posted this on several TOADM videos of Bad Girlfriend in hopes more people would realize they are a sham like every other new band who just rips off other people's music from the past b/c the era of musical creativity is pretty much dead...you want to hear real music listen to XM 55 Jam On, those are the only creative bands left today
I'm a diehard Cult fan and there is some similarity. But so what? It's not like The Cult have never nicked a riff from their influences. Listen to AC/DC's Rock n' Roll Singer next to Wild Flower or The Stones' Start Me Up next to Love Removal Machine. All bands have moments where they come close to their influences, it's impossible not to. It's not theft necessarily, it's just a natural consequence of listening to music and then writing songs.
How do these idiots even TRY to defending the theivery in the music industry. Everyone wants to steal and call it "sampling" if its a rap song or "tributing" if its a rock song. Or whatever you want call it - just dont call it "stealing."
But the end is the same. You took something that wasn't yours. As a guitarist, I do understand that there are limited amounts of chord progressions, but I also value originality.
Of course music goes in circles there are only so many combinations. However a when they copy the main riff and the chorus its kind of riding the coattails of someone else. I know if someone stole my single riff that made me to the big time i'd piss on their tombstone.
it's not the same 'progression', idiots. Don't speak if you don't know anything about music. It's the same -melody-. A melody is different from a chord progression. And yes, you =can= be sued for ripping off a melody.
@SavageGreywolf Hey little furry person, sorry to burst your bubble but these 2 songs are exactly the same, just one song is shittier than the other (Fire woman > This ripoff), and i support this claim by stating that the time signatures are identical, the chord arrangements are identical, the lead is slightly different, but the CONTEXT is, unsurprisingly, IDENTICAL... other than that, they tried not to completely rip off the tune so they add in some horrible lyircs and whatnots.
Its the exact same progression. but that always fucking happens. Music repeats itself all the damn time. Like these songs: Taylor Swift "love Story", and Creed "one last breath"; "Canon (or canon rock)", Green Day "Basket Case". c'mon now its elementary.
hmmm i wudnt call the cult a hard rock band as u sed.ok they were good but not hard rock..there are only so many notes to use so its gonna happen that u hear things that sound the same..an they are close but i wudnt say a direct rip off..
I'll give you that, the higher harmony parts are close, if not the exact same notes. I will give you that argument.
The only thing that isn't true with your statement is that Theory of a Deadman is 'unoriginal'. The rest of their music, in my opinion, is, even though the subject matter is almost always the same.
Still, its hard to come up with stuff that hasn't been done before, so I don't blame them. I'll let this one slide from Theory.
I agree with your statement, being a Theory fan from day one myself, I think they are extremely talented and not 'unoriginal'. I'm pretty sure The Cult is aware of the similarity and is ok with it, or else the song wouldn't have been released, management wouldn't have allowed it. I also agree that they aren't the only band out there to have similar guitar riffs as another, songs have been unintentionally copied before. So I'm still going to enjoy their music in the future!
It's okay waldo..recent medical studies show that over 57% of the world is tone deaf. You gots lots of friends. Did you know if you play "Stairway to Heaven" backwards it says "Al Gore invented the internet" ? Pretty kewl stuff, eh?
It happens all the time. Switchfoot came out with a song that had almost the exact same intro as an Adema song. Hell, one day I was playing a riff I came up with off the top of my head and was really diggin it until my wife said "Oh wow, you learned to play Journey!"

They aren't even close! And Theory is NOT unoriginal. They are an amazing band. I agree with RookieRae, there are a lot of similar songs out there. This video was just made by some asshole who has nothing better to do in his life than piss people off. I have been a Theory of a Deadman ever since their first album, and I can tell you that they are definitely original. So stop leaving hate comments about them, you're wasting your time.
Not even close? Are you HIGH? Its almost dead on. Look up the guitar tab if you don't believe me.
Theory is DEFINATLY Unoriginal. There is nothing new about their band. If I cared enough to listen to their other songs I could probably find some more riffs.
haha, yea guitar tab. lol. This is music we're talkin about not numbers mr. assassin. it'd be the Same durn progression myan. You thing green day should be sued for using canon? why not sue taylor swift and creed to. ha
@alexisdunham dude theoy of a deadman is like the most unoriginal band out there ?! for god sakes they sound like Nickelback?! aka the gayest band in the hisrotry of gay things.

either way both songs are the shit. i mean...theory of a deadman thought, "damn nice beat" so they took it and ade it faster and maybe even a little better i still think.. FUCKIT
You know, this is even more blatant than the Mary Jane's Last Dance/Dani California ripoff. And it shares another similarity with that "accident": Theory of a Deadman's record company is Roadrunner, and guess which record label you'll see on the back of a Cult album? Yep, just like Tom Petty and the Chili Peppers are both on Warner Bros., TOAD and the Cult are both on Roadrunner. I'm guessing Ian and the boys didn't have much of a say in the matter. Screw corporate greed.
That thought has crossed my mind, but through the whole process they were not aware. Song creation? Recording? Production? Live Shows? Business Meetings? Somewhere along the line SOMEONE had to recognize the similarity.
The lead guitarist for The Cult (Billy Duffy) is a pretty cool guy, if they came to him about it correctly they might of said "I understand, it happens, or its dead on but you can still use it."
Im sure they know about it. If not they must be too busy touring but it will come up. I dont know if they will persue legal action but I think they should at least be credited on the song.
You would be suprised. Music style and riffs are stolen more often then you think, even the riff from Stairway to Heaven, considered the greatest guitar song of all time, is beleived to be ripped off of the song Tarus by the band Spirit it is along the same key, tone and is VERY similar in some parts.
But this one is a little bit more than similar... its nearly dead on.
I noticed this the first time I heard Bad Girlfriend -_-
