Loved this show! Back in grade 4 ('79) all the guys in our group role played. But nobody wanted to be Princess or Kiop!! Go figure lol!! SPECTRA FOREVER!! LOL!
If "Battle Of The Planets" was set in the 21st (or later century), why was there, at 0:52 of this clip, a 1960's/1970's Apollo command module re-entering Earth's atmosphere??
@altfactor Forget which episode it was, but it did make sense when you see it (I think). Anyone know it the movie is still coming out this year (Gatchaman)? Saw the preview for it last year and it looked great.
sandy franks presents gatchaman with all the violence cut out and centre neptune added to fill in the gaps..I love this theme, but search for the gatchman theme and you'll hear the music from inside the cartoon :)
Oh my.... I loved this cartoon so much, brings back so much memories.... I guess I am going to walk down memory lane now... :'( Sure miss those days, gosh, how time flies.... I would do anything to go back to my childhood :')
Actually, by the early 80's, this show started getting much rarer. It would disappear for a while where I lived, then come back occasionally. By 84, Robotech had replaced Star Blazers, and Voltron had replaced Battle of the Planets. I liked Botp. The musical opening was great. I even tolerated the Robot. As a young kid, It helped me identify better. I liked "kid's shows" that weren't kid's shows -- that were more serious in nature. This makes it a bit hard to watch as an adult, though.
I can't even remember how many hours spent watching BOTP when I was a kid.. geez!! talk about a blast from the past - today's cartoons can't even TOUCH the stuff we grew up wth back in the 70's - imaginative, a classic..
Hoyt Curtin did the music for dozens of our favorite cartoons back then. We took it for granted....but go look at his wiki site...and look at all the themes he composed. The man was a genius.
Loved Battle of the Planets in the late 70s, would watch it religously!!! Ahead of its time, simple as that. Science Ninja Team Gatchaman all the way!
@TNTTONE Yes, it was great...the best ever??? It's in the the top 3 along with Star Blazers & Voltron (Lion). There were some other great ones..He-Man, GI Joe, Thundercats. Sadly, most cartoons from the 80's or 70's were better than the stuff that's shown today. Today Ben 10 is decent and Batman Brave & Bold is ok.
@shawbros Tell me about it man! I'm an orchestral musical connisuer from Stu Phillips and Alan Silvistri all the way to Hanz Zimmer and John Powell... THIS is a MASTERPIECE! The BEST Trumpet playing that I've EVER heard!
Battle of the Planets was a show that inspired me even more to pursue my career in films when I was only about 11 or 12 years old. I've seen it in re-runs since then and it was really a bad show and yet, I remember it fondly for the influence it had on me all those years ago.
Thanks for posting the theme song from it, it's great to know that it's still valued.
@animatorIsomer "I was only about 11 or 12 years old. I've seen it in re-runs since then and it was really a bad show and yet"
WAITAMINUTE.
This is the first cartoon I can think of that had a story arc across the series and it was one of the first Japanese animation that was truly anime. I think you are selling it a bit short.
You must be aware the show was heavily edited for American audiences. 7-Zark-7 - I still want to kill the @#$@#*&@!! robot. Annoying little Nancy.
WOW, thanks for the post! I've been racking my brain forever trying to remember the name of this show- I used to love watching it as a kid before going to grade school in the morning LOL
Excellent cartoon, my 2nd favorite as a kid to the Flash Gordon series. I have some Gatchaman as well as Gforce DVDs. Need to watch the Gman closer to see what all is cut out.
ah the real intro from when i was a kid. the young boy on the team was named keyop or something. you could never understand him, but that was the idea
Sandy Frank is responsible for destroying it. He cut out so much of it they had to create "7-zark-7" and "1-rover-1" to fill in the time. (Princess' yoyo actually had blades on it to rip out throats and "keyop" was a perv.)
Jees, it's decades (oh god) since i last saw that.Me and my mates in junior school even had a g-force club(membership via invitation only) with ID badges and evrything.*hangs head*

"Watching, warning against surprise attack by alien galaxies beyond space."
"Protecting earth's entire galaxy."
Clearly the show's budget didn't cover a science adviser.
Or anyone with more than a 6th-grade science education.

@MrWhipple42 No, but it was a fun cartoon! Probably should have said, ".... alien galaxies beyond KNOWN space", but still...

It's too bad the Japanese sdon't seem to do these kind of cartoons anymore.

Absolutely! Some of the older TV themes are really impressive as far as orchestration goes.
