  • thanks =D

  • keep pressing 5 :)

  • Really nice, thank you. I especially like your clips from well-known songs that use the beats you just illustrated.

  • Thanks helped alot!

  • play a breakdown old man let me see you fuck shit up. oh wait i don't think you have a double bass on there.

  • Video not available! Oh no! Is it my comp? Good uploads thanx

  • To all the nasty commenters..if you are so good you wont be watching. Why waste your time wih all the stupid comments. If you are so good you will be making videos and let others learn from you and not be watching his videos....zzzz. to the lame dogs.

  • hey mann, im really happy i love your lessons mann, you know, i tried doing your exercises and they look easy but they were quite tricky for me and now im learning more and more and im happy man, thanks!!

  • @fmtknr I took drum lessons with a private teacher when I was young. Had a few when I was 5 (learned snare drum rudiments only). Got drum set lessons in high school from a different private teacher. I always learned from other drummer friends I had (some in the HS marching band) and I also learned from Modern Drummer magazine (David Garibaldi's published lessons were particularly interesting). One thing my drum set teacher made me do was transcribe (then play) hit songs.

  • hay sir.. i am a student about to go for an audition at an high school and i was wondering what can you recommend for drummer who is between beginner and intermediate .. like what song i could play sir.. somthing simply slight funky ...ANY HELP ?

  • how much did that drum set cost todd im looking to buy a good one price doesnt matter

  • @MrCreatedAccount If price doesn't matter and you want an electronic kit take a look at the Roland Roland TD-20SX V-Pro, it sells for around 7K. This kit is the original V-Drum TD-10 with the TDW-1 expansion.

  • @ScoopDeville04 thanks for the help

  • this is for retards

  • get real drums.....justt sayin

  • @Vertex995 even though I'm 5 months late for this comment to be on time, it's a standard 'funk' beat: play hihat continuously (RLRLRLRL), add a bass drum on every fourth and a snare on every second fourth (R)

    I love you Tod :3

  • you are very professional.

  • thx tod

  • Thank you so much!! Very helpful and clear lessons. Cheers !!

  • i dont get it :(:(.. my drums should be coming here today.. and there eletric pad ones... will i still be able to do this?!? Pleaseee Respond!! :(

  • @Hayden8181

His drums are electric, pads have a different feel than actual drumheads, but whatever you like play, acoustic or electric set, you'll get used to playing either one, youll still be able to play beats just like any other drumset.

  • enjoying the tutorial , its getting there but loose it now and then and need to improve my timing ...thanks again

  • i just air drum :P

  • awsome man, what is that beat called on 1:20

  • awsome dude, what is that beat called on 1:21?

  • no offence but electric kits are really bad. but thats just opinion i guess.

  • thanks man, lots of beginner practice routines i can use..

  • this is too easy.....

  • I like how you give actual songs as examples to practice with. great teaching method. thanks a lot!

  • Okay, I am a peasant with no sense of rhythm... so this was all greek to me. Great to watch, great to listen to... but replicating int? Fahgeddaboudit!

  • hello ,

  • iv just started out at 46!, been playing for about 2 months now, like your style, very like my friends who's teaching me, ill be following these they are very interesting, you should do a dvd

  • 0im just a beginner and i dont have drums yet can you tell me what kind i should buy

  • FACT: its jay leno, he's not fat like jay and also a great drummer, thanks for postin these drum lessons kid!

  • this practice is really help for my knowledge thank's a lot bro....

  • thanks uncle tod pretty kool at first it dosnt but learn it it dose uncle tod your recomended

  • dude those are sick sticks what kind are they and would you please tell me the size?=Þ

  • I bought a bunch at NAMM many years ago. They are hollowed out nylon (I think) and I'm pretty sure they are unfortunately no longer available. Since they were made from synthetic materials they were always perfectly true and they lasted WAY WAY longer (maybe 10X) than a normal pair of wood sticks. They felt just like wood sticks to me.

  • Hey Todd thanx my daughter loves the drum lessons and she is picking up alot from your sessions. We got her a drum kit for xmas as her uncle is in a band and she wants to be a drummer. She finds it easier to pick things up.

  • thanks a lot tod^^ i kept making my own drumbeats on my drumkit ( its pretty small, 1 snare, 1 bass, 1 standtom and 1 tom xD) my first drumkit by apollo... Thanks a lot for the basic drumbeats and I like your band^^

I wanted to ask you what sort of drumset would be ok for a beginner... Electric drums or acoustic and what brands are good for their money and that stuff ^^ could you help me out??? Thanks and a happy New year (though a little late i know^^)

  • Tod, thanks a million for the lessons. I am just starting out and your lessons are very helpful. Thanks for taking the time.

  • you are a great teacher, your videos helping me in a great deal... thank you for your effort.

    God bless.

  • the person is giving you a free drum lesson and thats all you talk about is what kit he's using.

most people use a electronic kit to practice on. like my self i use a acoustic drum kit for live gigs and a electronic kit for practice,

i recommend anyone who is starting to play drums a electric kit.

    i love electronic kits

  • this is helping me pretty good.. thanks man

  • This guy has help me move right along in my practice. Great teacher, awesome advise. Your band is pretty good too, if I may say so myself.

And if any of you other users don't like it, why don't you just drop it and leave the video?

So yeah, thank you Uncle Tod, I appreciate it.

  • its sad people are playing on electric drum kit

  • real drums are best

  • Its called ummmm Maybe THEY DONT WANT THERE EAR DRUMS TOO BLOW UP. And if its in a small room its not normal..... Electronic drums are better for ur ear, but i still think the sound of real drums is 10x better

  • you do what you gotta do.. i live in an apartment..

  • I was talking about 1:30 in. But I'm pretty sure you didn't change the rhythm.

  • Are those accents just louder hits? Or do you play a some what different rhythm? -Adam

  • great video for beginners. great teacher and great presentation in my opinion. if you don't like it, move on to the next vid? he certainly isn't wrong in his content.

  • hate the electric drum sounds crap !

  • metal fuckhead,fuck you cocksucker

  • hahahah u probably like the cock u dumb fuck

  • you actually seriously helped me :D

im in GCSE music and im the drummer in a band, and to be honest, i suck, but you really helped so thanks x

  • Thank You man! you're heaven sent!

  • I understand what you're saying. I did own this kit at one time. I just thought you might be able to turn up the volume on the hi-hat? I do agree with you.

Thanks for the lessons. I'm sure they will help many new drummers.

    Take care!

    peace.

  • i love how everyone just argues about who is the best on expert villages videos ahahaahaha, if your all so good, why are you watching beginner videos XD

  • Anyway to make that pad sound like a real hi-hat?

    Good lesson for newbie.

    peace.

  • You'll need to listen to the funk lesson to getting a better idea what ONE sound for the hi-hat sounds like. In this video the sound you hear is what is picked up in the lavalier mic from the PA. The hi-hat sounds are pretty good but IMO still the weakest link in an electronic set.

  • just shut up and enjoy the video this guy is a good teacher and has already helped me to start learning the drums, oh wait i mean im like fkn awesome but i dont wanna boast about it, PattleProductions u r a knob

  • Tyvm, this helps.

  • Hey man! First off, I love the vids! I play a few instruments (keys, guitar and a little bass) and thinking of getting into drums. Can you reccomend a decent electric set? (and what setup do you have currently? it sounds really good!)

  • his set cost like 3000 dollars haha

  • Ahh, well that's out of my price range with relations to my skill level ^____^; I can't justify spending three grand when I'm a total newbie...

  • well it might be more haha. He has a higher end roland kit, But idk what model it is exactly

  • It's the original V-Drum kit, probably officially known as the TD-10, but it also has the TDW-1 Upgrade installed. At some point Roland upgraded the kick drum, cymbal and hi hat pads (I have none of those upgrades). I'm not sure if they changed the model number at that point..

  • how wrong you are xD

  • so wrong

  • not everyone drums the same basic beats idiot

  • are those all electric???

  • Yes.

  • changed name and learnt it now on my mates drum kit get my own soon

  • That's great. Don't rest on your laurels though. Keep practicing and keep learning the more complex beats, fills and techniques. (By the way, let other people decide if you are really good.)

  • yeah i just turned 13 and i can play stuff WAY more complex than this but i don't say that often. ITS CALLED BOASTING. (just incase ur wondering why im watching this if im very very good, its cos hes a gr8 teacher)

  • dude, its called BASIC BEATS, it dont make u really good. i practice loads and finally can say that im very good, extremely good 4 how long ive been playing, but PLAYING THIS JUST MAKES YOU.......OK

  • He haven't said he is very good, he is just trying to learn beginners <.<

  • omfg do you really believe, he shows all he is able to play?

    oO

its called LESSON, he teaches beginners. even you, dear drum god, have been a beginner.

  • im not talking about him im talking about the other eperson i nevermsaid im a drum god i will never be but look at the root of the problem b4 u assume!

  • good argument lol

i beg your pardon, didnt see it

  • lol dw

  • i could do this shit when i was like 9

  • That's why this lesson is entitled 'Basic Beats'. I too could do this when I was ' like 7 '.

  • "I could do this when I was like just a twinkle in my father's eye." - Tony Royster Jr.

OK, he didn't really say that but it was probably true.

  • wow thank you for doin this video. it seriously helps. i have never had a drum lesson and im trying to learn on my friends kit.

i have a video posted if you could check it out.

  • Ignore all the negative comments. Anonymous insults? What lowlife. I'm a middle aged beginner, I'm having lessons, but I think you're great. Keep doing this stuff.

  • i played drums then gave up willing to get back in to it thanks for posting this vid

  • Just got a drum set and was looking on YouTube and found these videos. Will definitely be using these to try and learn some. Thanks for putting these up.

  • is the bass drum on every beat or only on 1 and 3?

  • you can do either one whichever is more comfortable for you

  • 1 & 3

  • As an adult beginner I would like to compliment you on your great lessons. You have admirable teaching & drumming skills.

    Thanks for sharing your knowledge

  • You're welcome. I appreciate knowing there are adults out there taking up the drums. More adults should learn instruments or learn new instruments ( I know I am).

  • yes thank u im 12 and at 1:28 its an awsome african drum beat!! thank you can u do a vid on sort of half easy half hard because its ither really easy or relly hard thanx your great

  • yeah sweet child o mine!gnr rocks!!!!!

  • cool help me alot man..

  • for me, playing the bass drum on all 4 beats is easier than just 1 and 3 beats, thanks for the lesson

  • was it just me, or did Sweet Child O' Mine just randomly start playing in the middle??

  • yeah same here lol

  • Stuck it in as an example of four on the floor

  • oo. ok

  • Actually I just went back and listened to my own video again and realized I stuck the snippet of GNR in as an example of a simple two measure beat that had two of the eighth note patterns I had just demonstrated.

  • thanks uncle tod!! im a guitar player looking to pump up the drum skills, and these are great, no bullshit lessons!!

  • uncle tod you rule!!!!

  • You're a great teacher, Uncle Tod!!!

    How's that nephew doing?

    I know you're helping me a lot!

  • Hey thanks the kind word and for asking after the nephew. He went off to college last year but he has left drumming behind. Luckily the lessons seem to be benefitting some of you.

  • This is just my observation and opinion. You can take or leave it. This may or may not be his kit. Simply because the set up is lower or he's sitting higher than the kit it self.

It's not a good idea and it's a bad habit to let your left hand rest on your knee like that when playing. You won't get the full impact of the snare with striking it and your knee will just get in your way when playing.

  • Best free online drum lessons available. Only been playing for a few weeks now but definitely learning a lot from you. Thanks.

  • man i just wanna say you helped me a lot thank u vary much and i was a beiginer when i started and know i can do awesome fills

  • Your a great teacher! I haven't even gotten my drum set yet, but i've learned ALOT. I got inspired to do drums because of Rock Band 2, I can do every song on expert except a few, so I wanted to do real drums. You helped me ALOT

You should make a vid of yourself doing a song, instead of a lesson.

  • Tama rocks.

  • keep up the great vids. thank you

  • keep it up.. your a really nice man to make this lessons available for free..

  • wow thank you so much for these videos! they are so much easier to understand and play with than most videos.

  • I really appreciate your videos and keep watching them for 2 weeks as im an absolute beginner.

Hope I can response a video in a few weeks :)

    thanks.

  • Good Video

  • Great videos. I'm thinking of buying a drum set and learn some drumming. Any sets under $600 you recommend?

  • this is not even a drum set :D

  • How come no one ever says an electric guitar isn't a guitar. I'd rather play acoustics with my band, I'd much rather play electronics for making a video, practicing, and integrating with Garage Band!

  • don't listen to them! keep posting vids!

  • And Akira Jimbo's set isn't a real drum set either, it has electronics! *gasp*

  • i wish i had that drum set

  • great job breaking things down, but try not to let newbies see your left hand resting on your leg. it is a bad habit.

  • Now someone else mentioned that but you at least did it politely. It is a bad habit I only have on this electronic kit because I set everything very low so my son could play them and I never readjusted them. The top of the snare isn't high enough. I don't think most people will have their snare adjusted so low so it shouldn't be a problem, but you're right.

  • Good vid. thanks. Can I suggest a collar mic or such.

  • At some point I did go buy a Lavalier mic so that gets better. In the next vid I make I think I'm going to try sending the drums direct into the camera and then I'll do voice over during editing. (Maybe I'll talk less!)

  • thanks a load man

you helped me out a lot

  • good videos man. a friend of mine wants me to teach him how to play, but i've never tried to explain how to do the things i do on the drums. your videos will help me out a lot.

  • thank you so much i'm a beginner this is useful to me

  • thank you I learn so much.

  • i actually know how to play these kinda beats through rock band xD and i didn't know learning how to drum is really complicated with all those notes showng up in the vid. damn i wanna learn to drum but my mum wont let me T.T

  • Thnks for the Tips I got a Cheapy Practice Ion Eletric and a Mapex

    Thanks for ur help

  • scoopdeville04 my tom toms sound high pitch un tightened the skins still high pitched got any advise

  • The diameter and depth of the drums (and material) will also affect the pitch. If they are small in diameter they are meant to have a high pitch. You can only loosen the head so much before you lose the tonality. Sometimes a different head, like an Evans oil filled head might give you a sound you like better.

  • just bought a drum kit the other day and my right hand likes to follow my bass foot, specially for off notes on the bass pedal. Any tips/exercises on how help this ?

thanks in advance, u hav good videos.

  • It just takes time and practice and sometimes SLOWING way down. Eventually the repetition teaches your limbs to be independent. Keep at it.

  • Yer will do thanks for the advice. ill be practicing :P

  • Basically what he is trying to say, in simpler term's is, You need to work on your rythem with independent limbs.. Just work on that, Maybe do simple rock beat's for a bit, then move to more complicated beats.. Good luck man..

  • i got a normal kit, but thinking of changing to an electric like yours, do u recommend any?

  • I haven't played any other brands since I bought my Roland Vdrums years ago. I do love the Vdrums but they are pricey. Instead of "changing" to an electronic kit I would suggest getting one in addition to your acoustics if you can afford to have both.

  • I would look for a good used set on Craigs list, ebay, local music store, estate sales etc. Actually, I would probably only use ebay if the seller were local and I could examine the drums first. I'm sure I'll leave many major brands out but here goes in the order they pop into my brain: Tama, Yamaha, Ludwig, Slingerland, Gretsch, Pearl, Sonor, Fibes, Drum Workshop (commonly abbreviated DW - Pacific is their lower cost brand), Mapex, Rogers, Premiere. Do research on whatever models you find.

  • Where can I find good drums for cheap? Can you tell me some Drum Brands?

  • good vids man :)

    thnks for the help .

but can u close the high hat whenn ur playin beatss thn its easierr for a noob like me to hear whtss goin on:P;)

    thnkss

  • Billy Bob Thornton

    ROFL!

  • hey.. good help..

wanted ask somfin.. how do u just mute your drums.. as in,i stay in an apartment and even a single kick booms it up.. foget abt the double kickin.. plz help.. :)

  • Take off the front drum head and leave it off. Pile in enough pillows and blankets to get the muting you want. You could put the front head back on for looks but since you're just in your apt. practicing why bother.

  • He has Digital drums.

  • Nice grooves to learn... but the recording is a big handicap... voice explanation are very low on volume and pad noise covers drum kit sounds, so confuse the beats.

  • be quite it is enought it isnt advanced i have just played 4 1 yr and 3 months and this helps me make new things up

  • this is way too advanced for someone who just learned how to hold drumsticks...

  • ive never took lessons in my life and i can play this

  • Not true. I've NEVER played drums before, and I had my first lesson yesterday. I got some sheet music to practice and most of the beats were VERY similar to this. You just have to slow it down.

  • these aint basic fro a beginner

  • u scare me O_o

  • nice job, keep up the good work!

  • I am thankful for this guy cuzz i just realized today that my tom 1 and tom 2 were in the wrong places...LOL

  • He is great ! And he is taking his time to teach others ! thank you ! great job !

  • i agree ,i allways praise those people who take hours out of thier life to teach people music. i dont care about the sound ,ffs drums are not easy to record. though one mic.

  • WTF noobtube cant watch a vid without bashing someone... ur a good drummer.

  • wow it's amazing how this guy has taken time out of his own life to teach people to play the drums..and all people can do is come on here and bash him for it. it's funny because i will usually check the videos for the people who run there mouths. and either they don't have any posted at all or there drumming sucks.

  • good job

  • hi,am sam from ghana n wish to hear frm u becos i like drum but do not hv money to buy or purchase one.so plz if u hv an old drum then plz send it to me in ghana.233246264417

  • try earning and saving money instead of asking someone to send you some old ones.. It feels really good when you get what you have really worked hard for.. :)

  • I was watching this video when the ghost of a hog walked through my wall. Crazy shit!

  • @_@ WEIRD.

  • Great vids - some great practice tips

and i cant help but asking - are those hard rock cafe sticks? looks like it :P i got me some - but they aint cheap.

  • i have a very crapi drum set but sounds not so bad thanks to u

  • thanks man

i have a drum for only two days and now i can play 4 beats and 3 from you!!!

    thanks man!!

  • That's great progress! Keep practicing.

  • less talk more drumming

  • Thanks for offering criticism without gratuitous insults (very few people seem capable of this). If people watch these more than once I can see how the talking (and intro) gets annoying I could re-edit and put up versions with most of the talking edited out.

  • IT'S not that your teaching sucks is the quality that sucks . thats what i meant your teaching isn't bad at all
