This guy isnt just a great guitar player he is an artist. He writes great songs and has so much passion for what he does and thats why he's one of my favorites
We all have special gifts, but not everybody has the nerve, or courage, to do anything with it. am i crazy or is that the most bitchin advice for any human being?
@guitdude09 EVH is playing his Ibanez Destroyer in the clip in this vid. He stopped using it because he didn't like the tone after he cut a chunk out of it --that shark fin cut behind the bridge.
@kaboose111 He did. He actually gained significant commercial recognition before Joe, and it was his raving review of him as a teacher in his first interview that contributed to Joe's wider recognition.
Vai is just the coolest guy, he's like I would imagine Jesus to be, full of love and passion, kinda looks like Him too a little, I think. A lot of musicians are and seem stuck up but Steve is true to his nature, he's an approachable caring guy and a cool dude, on top of being one of histories best guitarists and best musicians in general, and it's true, when he plays he has a little quirky funny kind of thing with his facial expressions and movements and incorporates them into his playing! : )
Me and my best friend met him backstage in Manchester, he was touring with Eric Sardinas! We'd seen him and Satch twice before that on the G3 tours in England. My best friend was obsessed with all things Vai, and waited a year to meet the guy, but when we met him he was a complete asshole!! Arrogant, rude and short tempered, my friend completely binned everything Vai after that, and even sold his custom Ibanez axe!! He even seemed to be shitty with Sardinas offstage
God I love that man,Steve Vai is the best and I'll take him over Malmsteen anytime. He is so inspiring and so is his music,I've never ever heard anything from him I didn't like.
steve is better than eddie, hes just being modest... its likwe when you grow up and you are being compared with one of your fav. guitarists thats always inspired you and you are being asked whos better. you would say the other guitarist
@MichaelJacksonSpin back in the day I think more people had heard of Steve from Guitar Player magazine than had heard of Malmsteen. In fact Steve having transcribed Black Star for Guitar Player probably helped Malmsteen a shit load more than being in Alcatrazz helped Vai. Either way, they both made guitar history on their own terms.
@GuitarMaster5155 I think he sometimes strings a left-handed guitar upside down, sort of an homage to one of his heroes, Jimi Hendrix, who played a right-handed strat left-handed.
Thank you for posting this! I remember the day Passion and Warfare came out...I RAN over to Tower Records and screamed "YES!!!" when I saw that Blue Powder was on the album!
Intuition...the key that unlocks The Truth. It's so wonderfully obvious that you are playing from your intuition--your music is so purely true and beautiful. No note is arbitrary...it is all good! Jaya!
man im a guitar player too!! and you really inspired me a lot!! your guitar playing is so unique, i have a original project at BBUTEO channel and i live for it
I don't think he's received the critical acclaim in the popular media that he deserves as one of the best guitarist but people who know guitars know how much Steve jams and his level of talent.
well im going to just say this please dont get pissed at me but comparing guitar players are stupid when you think about it because it 100% your opinion no matter who you campare and when someone doesnt agree with you you get mad or they do plane and simple you cant campare two diffrent people from two diffrent familys who live two diffrent worlds sorry love steve vai and also love evh !!!!
@rickyjshiznit firstly, i doubt vai fucked thousands of women. and secondly....im not being literal. im not saying theyre actually homosexual and fancy men im just sayi......oh fuck it, ur too retarded to chat to.
@stitcha123 im sure vai has fucked atleast a thousand hes been a very well known guitarist for over 30 years... and he was in david lee roth AND whitesnake. also, how am i retarded? is it because i gave you a perfectly acceptable reason why the 80's werent gay and you couldnt think of anything clever to say?
@rickyjshiznit a well known guitarist for yes, but has been married for many if not all of those. i suggest u find out about steve vai before commenting on him sweetheart. i find it laughable you cannot view 1.02 and not have a laugh at the gay 80s. lyrca? big hair? well gay. awesome though.... and as for your 'perfectly acceptable reason' for the 80s not being gay being the the members of these bands probably fucked thousands of women - yup gotta hand it to u, ur a fucking idiot.
@WhySoSerious55555 ohhhhhhhh yes. i dunno i guess id stretch to arguably the two bands with the most clout in the rock industry, acdc n black sabbath, so perhaps pre 80s. i love how literal eveyone has taken my comment, by 'gay' i dont mean every man was a homosexual. i mean the lycra, the tight pants, the big hair, the make up, the synth, the cheesy rock faces.....lol GAY!!!!!!! but good gay. once again i point you to 1.06 - 1.08. hehe
love how he gives props to EVH...but really wtf has EVH done in the last 15 years that is worth mentioning? ...and this is coming from a EVH fan from the early 80's
@Hoshang2 why should some act a certain way because they play guitar a certain way. i could be mistaken but isnt rock about not giving a fuck and just having a good time doing what you love?
steve vai is probably the easiest guy to interview ever, you could ask him - "whats your favorite color?" and hed go into a ten minute, intellectual answer, of course that's awesome though.
nice to see this video, Vai was/is a huge inspiration to me, almost every song off P&W is a classic! I like what he said too, he tries to be original and not copy anyone, very nice Steve, hope to meet you one day and get a lesson. :)

I must admit, I never knew how smart he actually was until I saw this interview. I'm a HUGE Satriani fan, but I think I may buy a Vai CD to hear how good he actually sounds. To be honest, if it wasn't for Vai, I doubt if I would care what David Lee Roth sounded like as a solo artist.

Steve is the real deal.
He inspired me to keep recording after I became disabled...and met up with me 3 years later after I completed my song.
He is genuinely a great human being: down to Earth, humble, gracious.
Actually, my friend Vernon (Living Colour) told me Steve was the most humble guitarist on the Experience Hendrix tour they did together!
Every Steve Vai piece of music contains a little piece of his heart and soul.

Steve Vai seems very intellectual. You have to appreciate someone who hasn't let drugs fuck up his brain and still having that much talent.

@336kgf Drugs are like the dark side to musicians... they are the quickest route to playing emotionally, but they have horrible repercussions.

@336kgf If you're only buying one album, buy passion and warfare. IMO it's one of the best albums ever made.
