@Carycomic: Inarguable, but hey, *someone* has to invent things, it could have been Copperfield as easily as the older guys. Mark Wilson may have been a household name in the early 70s, but he chose to work largely behind the curtain after that, and he's nowhere close to a household name by 1980. Copperfield is hugely famous, though he too is now fading into obscurity. Still, you just can't compare the Train Sawing with the Statue of Liberty!

Train Illusion - Hella lame.
The train & table are so big that it's dumb. Why use a tiny girl when there is room for a full grown woman, like Mark Wilson's wife. The way the case is turned so that we are looking directly at the girl's head has no motivation, I've seen much more clever ways of doing that. It's just like the normal presentation with little novelty other than the separation.
That's not to say Mr. Wilson did not occasionally appear on TV, as himself. As I recall, he made a wodnerful cameo appearance on THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN, wherein he gave Lee Majors' character (ex-USAF Col. Steve Austin) a crash course in sleight-of-hand. Something to do with the episode's villain being a magic buff.
Mark Wilson = old school. David Copperfield=light years better.
