why is everyone saying their book is easy, go check it out, the snare and tenor features are pretty difficult, may sound simple but they are not in the slightest bit
0:30 If Rennick was there this year they would have placed higher than 6th. The reason why SCV didn't win drums in 2010 is because it was a building year for Rennick. I saw them this year already.
@TheLogan1156 yeah seriously rennick was with phantom regiment in 2010. have you just been going around trolling every drumline lot video you see? seems like it cuz every one that I've seen you've had a negative comment on
i tell you what. that dont have the most notes, but i learned up to the tenor solo and boy lemme tell ya. its easier to ram book reporst and grid stuff then to play this dynamiclly sound book man
Yes, Phantom may not play the hardest books. Yes, they may not play the most notes. But DCI isn't about who can play the hardest books and the most notes, or even who can be the flashiest line. Phantom has some of the best drum book writers who know how to put together each section of the line to make it perfect. Phantom's books every year are freakin' tight! On top of that they're playing consistent! That's all you need to win that drum trophy every year.
@Indepndnt87 I think they have one of the hardest books. Some people see flam drags at 200 and say "AAAAAHHHH!!!" But when those same people see half note triplets played perfectly at 66 BPM, they walk away. Which do you think is harder?
btw, I don't know if any of the troll-cats on here have tried to play this book, but it is difficult. try it a little before you say it's easier than any other groups' beats. i think your mind will be changed
A lot of you guys seem to be forgetting judges don't just score on how clean a book is played. They score based on touch, dynamics across the line, and actual musical phrasing too. One of the main reasons Rennick's writing is so good is that he uses space very effectively. Every bar flows together, and creates a musical production. Judges like this better than 2 bars of huge impacts on 2 and 4 followed by a 16th roll at 180 and some split singles. Phantom's book is very demanding because
@MHSTenors the difficulty of their music is probably about 90% the entire chart, instead of 100 to 0 to 100 again. Trust me, judges would rather see perfectly executed 8th note rolls that fit musically, regardless of comparative difficulty.
the best staff dont make the best drumlines. every single one of these guys has more talent in their left testicle than most drummers have altogether.
@scorch0012 Why do you think people flock to UNT? Because Rennick is there, he knows how to teach, and teaching is critical in Drumline... Having 9 snares learn how to play one music their own way leads to dirt, he taught all 9 of these kids at UNT how to play like he does, and they show it on Phantom... Thats why they're so clean and so good.
SUMMARY: Good teaching = Good Technique = Good playing = SEXY DRUMLINE.
Very nice stuff here! They are VERY clean and have an AMAZING quality of sound from section to section. Probably from their uniform technique and approach to the drums. Just my 2 cents...
I am a coats fan but i understand that corps win because of the aspects of their show and how everything fits together. i respect BD because they win for a reason not because they are overrated or over hyped. They win because they are good at what they do. this year phantom was better at drums than BD in finals and nothing is gonna change. Judges pick the corps that win because they have worked hard and they deserve to win, not because they like their music or how hard their percussion book is.
very clean. I love the sound quality from the snares. the book in general is very easy though. Very deserving of winning drums without a doubt. Im a BD fan but they just didnt quite max out the execution of their book. The truth is that both lines have talented players. Phantom just played their book better. They played the shit out of if. I saw BD when they were still in california and the drumline didnt sound much more refined from the videos ive seen from them at finals. Thats just my 2 cents
i just dont think phantom really deserved it this year. nowadays its all about innovation, which is what devs are all about. every year they are doing some new shit. it almost seems like drums is determined by how clean BD can get, cuz they always have the difficulty and if they can play their book as clean as any other line can play their easier book, its cookies
@jarbear027 I would have to disagree respectively. I don't feel like BD brings a very musical or innovative package at all. If anything, they have been doing what every BD line has done in the past. They play a pretty tough, non musical book fairly well, or average at best. However, I thought the quads were great, but the snareline had way too many grey moments. Phantom was by far a superior line and no one can deny their execution and quality. BD is overhyped and overrated almost every year.
@jarbear027 How can you say "nowadays its all about innovation" as if BD sets the standard for good drumlines when they got beat out for drums for 9 years in a row? (98-2006 they did not win drums). Nowadays, as it's always been, whatever you play, you gotta play it clean. Bottom line. Ultimately that's what counts. Why do you think SCV hasn't done well in drums for the past several years? Because they're too busy playing crazy crap in the parking lot. Same with Cavies under Jim Casella.
@jarbear027 You miss the whole point,my friend. When judges critique drumlines they listen and watch how well they fit with the brass and pit.Doesnt really matter how tough the book is at all. They dont judge the parking lot.Phantom was crystal clear, had perfect technique, sound quality, marching and attitude. And by the way, watch some Blue Devils from the 80s for innovation and kick ass drumlines. In 10 years people wont be talking about BD from a modern standpoint. They will still talk about the 80s.
highschool notes played hella clean. they did the same shit in 06 when they won drums, but i have to say in 06 they deserved it cuz it was so clean and the sound quality almost me shit my pants. i just wish they played harder book like devs do, but they like to play it safe and make it easy to clean. i think phantom has the talent to play a book thats not so soggy, and still play it clean. on the other hand, i think if devs watered a couple parts, they wouldve raped drums.
@jarbear027 As a Phantom and UNT alumnus, I need to address these statements of Phantom's easy books, and how Dev's have harder books. I learned at UNT under Paul that there are many drummers that come in expecting to make drumlines, and they got mad chops! When given the "task" of playing 8-on a hand, they absolutely can't do it! So I pose the question, especially to the people that accuse Phantom of easy books - what defines difficulty - fast notes....or working with more open space?
@Mergician And to add to that - as bass drummers, I've met more people who can play 4's than they can 2's, given the more room for error. At the same time, there are people who watch a bass line play some awesome 2's....and immediately cry easy book. Just some more food for thought.
"This is the most insane audition I've ever been too" - - bass drummer at 05 PR auditions, who was cut from BD. He ended up aging out at BD in '06.
@Mergician dude, yes. I agree for sure. I don't think it's so much "working with more space" as much as it is actually playing in time. When I drum my goal is to be so in time that I cancel out the Dr. Beat and I can't hear the click. So many individuals and groups take this concept for granted and don't really fully apply it. They would rather be clean "clean" than go for individual "in time-ness."
To all those saying that these guys hide dirt with their tuning:
Even with the most possible snare response, it will only affect the sustain of the drum by thousanths of a second. Anything that would otherwise be dirty, would still be dirty on these drums. Sorry to impose upon your verbal sabotage of an excellent program.
@Tenorsarefun they sounded loud in person. im not saying they werent clean, but they tuned their bottom heads to be able to get tons and tons of sound out of the drum. the negative side to that is that their tuning hid any dirt that was there. they were really really good, dont get me wrong, but their tuning hid some stuff.
@Tenorsarefun im not saying they didnt earn it. they threw down really hard on finals night, and so did everyone else. i think it was really close between the top 4, and i would hate to have to decide a winner.
@LAKings0101 A lot of drumlines do that. Its not cheating or anything. But if you listen to some vids of the snareline from the side you can hear the top heads and it's still clean.
@ilkecoolaidandclnbts no i understand its not cheating. but it does hide minor errors. its clean in a sense that all of the notes are together, but it makes balancing easier, and on the DCI level, balance is what makes up the majority of the dirt. they made it easiER to balance and be clean. they were still really good tho.
