  • Dan Henderson would throw Phil Heath around like a child. Look up some videos of him - Olympic Greco Wrestler. In MMA fighters are always freaked out at how strong he is. Go to an arm wrestling tourney and see how the winners are built.

  • In sports such as wrestling big muscles need more blood, which means more heart rate, which means harder breathing.Wrestlers and MMA fighters with too much size get gased cuz they can't build the cardio of like a stronger, but less muscular person. Type in "heavy kettlebell 200 pound" and watch the top video. Phil Heath can't press that much even once. It's "core strength". Heath WAS a BB player - he can't even straighten out his arms now thx to steroid abuse.

    She probably just eats right and works out a few times a week, which is sensible.

Then they show her working the move and she has obliques, definition above her knee, good hamstrings, a slight bicep.She also has lats, Yes, she doesn't look like like an iron lifting steroid queen (basically a guy), but i find that good. Women are suppose to be soft. collin355, functional fitness is the way you get better at athletics. Muscle arms from curling dumbells do nothing. I'm guessing you train like a hamster, not an athlete.

    you have no idea what functional training is then.

    functional training is using gym style movements to enhance non gym activities. e.g a golf player might do high pull wood chops ON CABLE MACHINE to to simulate their golf swing.

    don't be drawn into the moron mentality that you have to be out side or doing some wacky exercise to be considered functional. it just means enhancing a real life movement using gym style equipment.

  • 95% of the time the term "functional training" which literally varies hugely from person to person, is just an excuse for people not to bust their ass on heavy compound barbell lifts, where most of the real progress comes from.

    How many people demonstrating these exercises can even fill out a medium tshirt? sorry, but the bottom line in most sports is that you have to be strong as fuck as a foundation for anything else.

  • actually most body builders use some cable work. i'm 110kg at 6ft with moderate bosy fat, which is fairly big and i use up to four cable exercises per week. rope push downs, cable curls, cable rows and some times cross overs. i bet you think barbell curl is the "ultimate biceps mass builder", well it's not. cable curl is better. exactly the same movement, but it works you harder over the whole range of motion. the barbell curl is only hard through the middle 3rd.

  • youd be better off doing your 4-5 basic strength lifts- not only do you get strong and maintain muscular balance, you will build your body (to look good) more that way anyway.

  • That would depend on what function you are training for. Cables are often superior to DBs because you are able to overcome the resistance from different angles as opposed to free weights where the resistance can only pull down.

    The standing cable chest press is a perfect example, it mimics the motion of a fend (if your training for contact sports) much more closely than a bench press.

  • "Always" and "never" statements have limited applicability to real life. Machines definitely have their place in a weight training program.

  • These exercises are good for athletes not bodybuilders. If your an athlete looking to supplement your training you do these type of exercises. Also if you want to get a more leaner, athletic look you would do these along with other types of non weight training. Also lots of cardio!

  • machines are crap, well for me they don't do anything...to give you an example i can do 100kg on a cable machine x10 reps slow and controlled with little exertion on lat rows, yet with free weights i can barely do 50kg..forget free weights and machines, they are the bane of proper weight training.

  • Thats because cables have pullies which drasticly reduce the weight. From a functional perspective cables arnt that bad. Yes free weights are slightly better but as long as you can put together major muscle groups in a movement then you will get funtional strength.,
