Looking at the first verse and having watched Dave speak about Kurt's death in Back and Forth, I think those lyrics are about Kurt. He was helpless and knew his friend was in trouble. And then he was gone. I love this song because EVERYONE can relate to this. It's universal for being let down or disappointed and pained by the experiences we have in life and the people we come in contact with. <3
It's about being in a situation where he should have known. When he started writing it, he was thinking about a specific time but as he kept writing and as he sang it, it became about all the times in his life where he should have known. He said it in Back an Forth. -3 best song ever!(:
Um actually I think that he stated in Back and Forth that it was about someone he used to be involved with. Looking at the situation he said to himself.....I should've know this was going to happen. Then looking back there are alot of situations he could say that about.
Just read "This is a call:the life and times of Dave Grohl" biography by Paul Brannigan. Dave Grohl says it is about his long time friend Jimmy Swanson , who also died from a drug OD, and other friends that he has lost along the way. Epic song, Epic Album, Epic Band!
this song is written about the death of dave's friend jimmy from a drug overdose and its also about how it reminded him of kurt cobain and how he didnt want to have to go through it again(lose a friend). its about kurt, too.
i love reading comments and seeing how many people think they know things about the band and they are wrong...or people bragging that they know something that everybody else who is a foo fighters fan knows..........and some1 probably said it already but for every1 who thinks this is about kurt stop arguing and watch the documentary...none of the foo fighters songs are about kurt!!!
Hey there you tube party people, I am in a new punk/pop/rock female lead band named Hey You and was browsing through similar style artists who have had some sort of impact in our music. We are just hoping to get some kind of input from people who have the same great taste in music for our new music video that we put up. Rock on and thanx!!!
If you watch the movie Foo Fighters Back and Forth, Dave explains that this song is about ALL the bad times in his life and how he should have known they would do that. So it is about girlfriends dumping him, Taylor overdosing, but NOT dying, but not at all about Nirvana.
this song isnt about nirvana or kurt cobain just cos krist plays bass on it, its about daves friend (ive forgotten his name) who died of a drugs overdose in 2008, one of the obvious pointers is 'i should have known, look at the state your in' when youve read this comment look at the lyrics carefully. Massive love for the foos

this song is woooooooow, not that i dont like other foo fighters songs but this song has soul, dave and krist 2gether -again- its just pure magic,..thx for that. cheers
i watched foo fighters back and forth, this is about how he didnt know the band would be like this from the start like he didnt think this would happen when he was in nirvana, its about kurt too, the bassist from nirvana played for bass here :D
@sasukeuchiha9724 but its not....the documentary said this is about his old friend and later that day he titled it 'I should have known' because he thought i should have known people would think this was about kurt.....sorry im correcting u lol
@metal666swag lol nah its ayt, we've all had different facts from different sources, maybe i miss heard, but i remember kirst the bassist from nirvana, do that bass line here, so like yeah you know, but nvm :D it's still an awesome song from an awesome band :D
The song is about how he should have known that that was going to happen to Kurt. And there's some denial in the song because he feels he could've done something about it (he couldn't have). Great song, great lyrics. R.I.P. Kurt. ♥
i also heard that Dave said it was about Kurt, but i guess it doesn't really matter. my ex boyfriend killed himself, so for me it's about suicide, but like most good songs it can mean different things to different people

The song is about how he should've known that that was going to happen to Kurt. There is some denial in the song too because he feels he could've done something about it. It's also partly about one of his other friends that OD'ed a while back.
And you messed up on the lyrics. But it's ok! ;) ♥ Love this song.

Easily one of the best Foo Fighters song ever!
And the songs about the times in Dave's life where he should have known. Simple as that.

love the song to bad there are to many mistakes in the lyrics :(
example:
0:31 correction: Damn my heart gone ''deaf'' instead of there
0:40 correction: But i dove right in, instead of: But i dont write in
1:31 correction: I was inside of you, instead of: There was that side of you
1:41 correction: Caught me on a web instead of: Caught me unaware
2:19 correction: Feel me one last time instead of : heal me one last time
and there are many more! to bad great song less lyrics :(
jurie4 4 months ago 4
Some of the lyrics here are wrong. For example, "I should have known, but I don't write in" is actually "I should have known, but I dove right in."
