I'll admit that was a patchy performance. Mariah needs to be careful how much she changes things from the recorded version. She still has her voice but she needs to rest it. She needs her nodules removed but whoever carries out this procedure needs to be careful. Look at Julie Andrews and Bonnie Tyler.
She's too talented musically to not know that she sings poorly nowadays... I'm sure it frustrates her that the damage on her vocal cords limits her so much... I'm praying that she finds some sort of solution soon!

As for the nodules, you can blame Julie Andrew's doctor for most singers not having them removed. Ever since that fiasco, no major singer will risk the surgery (Liza, Whitney, Mariah, Andy Williams, etc) for fear of losing their ability to sing completely. Most would rather sing at a lesser capacity than risk losing their voices completely.

Celine Dion and Whitney Houston also have noduals and have had them since the early 90's, I believe. Celine sang constantly all through the 90's and 2000's and though she doesn't sound like 1994 either she still has a very strong belting voice, because she was very disaplined in taking care of her voice, not talking for days on end, no dairy, drinking, being around smoke, etc.

I thought it was okay, she can def still sing, my only thing is she likes to change up the the songs to much. She's too talented musically to not know that she sings poorly nowadays... I'm sure it frustrates her that the damage on her vocal cords limits her so much... I'm praying that she finds some sort of solution soon!

She sounds beautiful. I'm sure much of the restraint has come with being on the road half the year for 20 yrs & not wanting to wear out her voice. As for the nodules, you can blame Julie Andrew's doctor for most singers not having them removed. Ever since that fiasco, no major singer will risk the surgery (Liza, Whitney, Mariah, Andy Williams, etc) for fear of losing their ability to sing completely. Most would rather sing at a lesser capacity than risk losing their voices completely.

@jabartolone Mariah hasn't had her nodules removed because she's scared of losing her voice, she hasn't had them removed because they are the reason she can sing like she does.
She's explained it all in an interview; her nodules are the reason she has the whistle register and the chest register and the ability to still be "husky".

point blank, mariah carey stated on Larry King that she hates belting, its boring. Oh and obvious this version isn't as good as her original because.....in the 90's Mariah's voice was PERFECTION. if u got a problem, blame time not mariah. But as many have said, no matter how "badly" she sings, it'll always be 10 million times better than today's artists. Keep true music alive mariah!

It must be so frustrating for her with the nodules because the risk is huge to get them removed but with them she can't belt as good. And you can still see that she still has something in her voice (it's beautiful) just waiting to come out. How do you get nodules on your chords? Through constant singing? Or was it the demands of her songs (vocally)?

Celine Dion and Whitney Houston also have noduals and have had them since the early 90's, I believe. Celine sang constantly all through the 90's and 2000's and though she doesn't sound like 1994 either she still has a very strong belting voice, because she was very disaplined in taking care of her voice, not talking for days on end, no dairy, drinking, being around smoke, etc.

I loved this performance. with so many fake singers out there, (it is becoming the convention for singers to have prerecorded vocals at their concerts!!) Mariah is so courageous to give us the real thing, no matter how much her voice is clearly hurting.

I thought it was okay, she can def still sing, my only thing is she likes to change up the the songs to much. Just sing it like it is, i also think thats where she gets herself into a little trouble, trying to do a bunch of runs, staccato, using that breathy voice, ad libs and hitting low notes. At the end when she just sings, its amazing!

She definitely started out very weak and nervous? Became a lot more comfortable towards the end and all you people saying that she can't sing anymore, were you watching the SAME video? She's still got it. yes, she didn't sing it like how she did when it first came out in the EARLY 90s! HELLO! Of course! Yes, it definitely wasn't as good as her old performances but give her a break. People's voices change when they age. She's still amazing and still holds one of the BEST voices ever.

well, actually if you compare THIS performance to a rihanna performance, probably rihanna's better, BUT this woman is 20 years older than rihanna and if they were bothe the same age, rihanna would be completely out of the competition. Let's wait and compare this to rihanna when she's 40 as well...

@jmgomez007 Don't be fooled by this performance. This song is extremely hard to sing and Mariah pulled it. People immediately copare this performance to her older ones and yes, it sounds weaker.BUT don't you believe for a second ANY singer could do it better. Mariah's songs cover the widest ranges and people with less than 3.5 octaves would be in serious trouble singing this or any other of her songs.

It´s really hard to sing live on stage ,cause you have to trust on technical support ( i know that because i´m a singer too ;) )

Sorry, no fun intended. I really love Mariah Carey and at the same time am slightly disapointed at her behavior. She use to be so classy. You have to admit her latest performances have not wowed us as she has done in the past.
