From Obama’s speech in San Francisco:

"You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them," he said.

"And it's not surprising, then, they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations,"

From Obama’s Dreams of My Father: ; 'It remained necessary to prove which side you were on, to show your loyalty to the black masses, to strike out and name names.'

From Obama’s Dreams of My Father:

I never emulate white men and brown men whose fates didn't speak to my own. It was into my father's image, the black man, son of Africa, that I'd packed all the attributes I sought in myself, the attributes of Martin and Malcolm, Dubois and Mandela.'

From Obama’s Dreams of My Father: 'I ceased to advertise my mother's race at the age of 12 or 13, when I began to suspect that by doing so I was ingratiating> myself to whites.'

    .

From Obama’s Dreams of My Father: 'I found a solace in nursing a pervasive sense of grievance and animosity against my mothers race.'

From Obama’s Dreams of My Father: 'There was something about him that made me wary, a little too sure of himself, maybe. And white.'

  • this is interesting commentary here, but this utopian idea that we should forget our color in order to get along is a farce. White people and others refuse to believe that the slave trade caused this many problems for this long. They cannot fathom an act that was outlawed in 1865 would have any bearing today. So why are teenagers who were born in the 1980's and 1990's hanging nooses today? And not just in the south. Racism doesn't exist? Sounds generational.

  • Whites have a legitimate reason for resentment of laws based on historically oppressed minorities - but Obama will do absolutely nothing to reduce this resentment. He is a Democrat - read their party platform.

  • Come on man, are you serious about this comment? Whites have a legitimate reason for resentment, explain this? They were the oppressors, this sociaty was given a hundred years without legislation to correct itself and nothing was done. So then laws were enacted. How can whites be resentful about that unless it is at themselves or their relatives for not doing what was right?

  • So if your parents ran up their credit card you think you should be legally responsible to pay? Your comment is dishonest.

  • No but, if I continued to run it up without paying it after they were gone then yes I should pay for it?

Blacks don't resent whites for slavery, we resent them for not wanting to talk about it or the effects that it has had on shaping this nation. We resent the way the struggle it produced is portrayed by this society, we resent the fact that we still have to overcome problems left over from it.

  • Economic problems stemming from the 100 years following slavery can still be felt today. Policies undertaken in the 1960s and 70s still impact the black community today. But no one wants to talk about them. The resentment doesn't come from 150 years ago, but from policies practiced less than 40 years ago. But this maybe to complex to understand. The history of this nation didn't stop in the 60s, to grasp the true condition of the black community and experience look during the last 40 years.

  • I do want to talk about it but here is the starting point. Is there a government policy effective today that descriminates against any one race? If there is I would love to join you in calling for its removal. But if your asking me to live in the past or accept the government engaging in mind control to try to exterminate racism count me out. The only way racism dies is in the heart of each individual and that takes forgiveness not vengence.

  • Yes there is, the crime laws have been repeated sighted in court cases for their racists sentences. Also the formulas used to form the bases for funding public schools have been sited as being racist because of the unequal way they portray black neighborhoods, including middle class black neighborhoods.

  • Oh and I am not asking you live in the past but as a country we need to get over this notion that the past doesn't affect the future or the present. To believe that you can destroy black families for so long, and render blacks second class for so long and not have any lasting consequences is not using sound thinking. People say they want to talk about race but can't get past the fact that the past still holds weight in the present and I'm not talking 300 years ago either just 60.

  • flip, our existence comes possibly as a result of the entitlements, certainly the shoulders, of our ancestors. it takes the form of cost-of-living increases, and the prerogative of our institutions.

  • Have you been in any ruined inner city in America lately? Go to Detroit, Cleveland, Baltimore etc then you'll see the reason for white anger. Check the crime stats. Check the dropout rates. Check the illegitemacy rates. What world are you living in?

  • He's living in the "black community". Not once in my life have I lived in a white community or attended a white church or listened to white theology. From what I can tell I am living Martin Luther's dream with black and asian friends, family and coworkers. Some people will never find equality because they won't realize they have it.

  • Joe Racism is not Politics,Its a humanity problem. And u can only transcend Human resentment by telling it as it is. Note, first rule of resolving a problem is to recognise the problem.

  • The media and some of the people in this society are angry because Obama told the truth and it was the same for the late Pope John Paul II they got mad at him because he was talking about the racism that goes on in society. The media wanted to make him look like he was starting something when he was not he was just telling the Truth just like Obama

  • Wonderful analysis by all the pundits.

  • very telling that one cannot tell the difference between the bushlovers and the hillary zealots as they guzzle this corporate whore media kool aid.

Even in the ten second sound bites the whore media have played over and over and over its obvious that Rev Wright spoke more truth than we've heard for 20 years from the false prophets that back the filthy republicans.

  • Thank you to everyone who has the guts to not just defend Wrights comments, whether you completely agree with them or not. He did not say anything that white pastors have not said a million times. but white politicians are applauded for associating with them.

Wright DID NOT PREACH HATE ONCE. He condemned racism and criticized American foreign policy. Anyone here ever condemn racism or criticize our foreign policy?

  • PP79000

h(ins)annity and pus limpbag and all of that filth preach more hate every day than any other group on the face of the earth combined.

Not once has the hillary/gop whore media had the balls or the honesty to play any clip before Wright said, "God damn America" so people could maybe see why he might have said such a thing. It's like whore media expect us to believe some crazy black dude suddenly jumped up in church and said "GD America" like he was speaking in tongues or something.

  • maddow, spare me your bullshit that america has to be "smart enough" to appreciate obama's bullshit. race is not an issue. obama does not deserve to be president. he is the inferior candidate. I LOVE BEING INSPIRED, but what inspires me is deep knowledge of issues, extreme intelligence, political savvy, and superior experience, not some pretty suit who talks pretty. what a sham, and what a shame. stupid Democrats.

  • Based on substance it was one of the greatest speeches I've read given by a top tier mainstream politician in modern times.

  • this is outrageous. the story is that this guy has chosen as his spiritual mentor some superficial bombast for the past 20 years, tells us the bullshit lie that he didn't know this guy was a bombast sloganeering chump, and then all sorts of media want to give him credit for some bullshit speech about race afterward?! non-racism is healthcare for all, good education for all, good foreign policy for all, good economics, and Clinton trumps obama, himself a melodramatic preachy sloganeer, on this!

  • I understand your frustration, but if this is all you got from his speech, I think you really missed out on something. If Clinton wins the nomination and some of your anger has subsided, maybe you can come back and watch the speech again and get something from it. I hope, anyway.

  • The church and Reverend Wright should be about religion, not preaching hate toward whites. Rev. Wright has been doing this for over 30 years. Politics in the Church? Is this church tax exempt? It should not be! Obama says he doesn't agree with Rev. Wright's sermon. Common Obama, you have been a church member for 20 years. You have been listening to this hatred for 20 years. You did not leave the church. This tells me that you believe in what Rev. Wright is preaching.hate toward the white race.

  • When did Wright preach hate, In22525? When did he preach hate? He preached with anger. And he condemned racism. And he criticized foreign policy (which I'm sure you've never done). He never once preached hate. Never once encourage his parishioners to hate anyone, white, black or other. He preached with outrage about hate. he didn't preach hate. We've got to stop saying that.

Disagree with his opinions and statements, but don't say he preached hate. that just isn't true.

  • The new trend in todays America is ,you say what America does to other nations(invasion, dictatorship, exploitation) despite all the evidence out there in both documentations and in pictures, and the realt RACIST and hate preachers will try to discredit u by accusing u of being Anti-America. What i would expect them to do is to prove that what Rev.Wright is saying is false and mischaraterisation of America, but unfortunately everything he said is factual. Dont do the crime if u cant do the time

  • Factual and agreed with by the 9/11 Commission and CIA. I also want to mention that the clips we keep seeing were originally aired by Fox News who spliced them together misleadingly. Wright only ever criticized US foreign POLICY, never US citizens, never said we deserved the attacks and in that same sermon he referred to the terrorist attacks as "unspeakable acts."

Futhermore, he has never preached hate for any color. He has preached against ALL racism for decades.
