14 members of my family signed the Great Charter. The Marshall family was French and their loyalties Plantagenet. This however seems to be a direct attempt once again to distort history. There is no disclaimer at the beginning of the film saying it is completely fiction. It is an interesting film, but bringing the Charter into the matter should have been left out if not portrayed truthfully and since none of us were there how can it be portrayed truthfully?

The thing that everyone seems to miss about Robin Hood is that he's not stealing from the rich to give to the poor. He was just taking the money BACK that the government stole that MADE the people poor in the first place. This story is always touted as a story of wealth redistribution but it's actually about the power of individual rights and freedom as well as personal responsibility vs totalitarianism. This is summed up beautifully in Russell Crowe's monologue to the king in the film.

Still the best take on the Robin Hood story is that by Geoffrey Trease (1934) "Bows against the Barons". It was inspired by contemporary events, notably the social unrest of the Great Depression. Incidentally, Crowe did not say Robin Hood was the oldest tale, he said oldest ENGLISH tale. He didn't say British, either, so Beowolf can retain that mantle.
