I'm a year in the Air Force here. I'm not sure how different our sister branches are. Here, once you're done with basic and technical school, it almost feels the same as a civilian job. People overestimate the physical aspects of basic and underestimate the mental. Your body will adjust and they don't expect recruits to be in perfect shape, but dealing with the culture shock or taking orders from other recruits who are younger/dumber than you can be stressful depending on your personality.
@selectandstart123 You know the army calls the air force the "chair force" right? :D I'm glad that I'm as old as I am, I think that might give me a bit of an advantage in dealing with the psychological manipulation of basic. I know it's about breaking and reshaping a person, so just deal with it, it DOES have a purpose. And dealing with superiors that are "less capable" than you, that describes every job I've ever had, that's nothing new.

@SaneTezz there's no appropriate driver for my Creative Labs VF0230 for windows 7 that i could find and i used to compile and edit the raw vids in Windows Movie Maker and i haven't investigated whether there's a Win7 version of that yet.
@danieltheli0n I'm in pretty good shape for my age and I think being older actually puts me in a better place to deal with all of the stress better than the young guys. And yeah, enlisted guys get enough to pay the bills and support a family. Not exactly setting the world on fire, but soldiers don't become soldiers to get rich anyway.
@Fjarhultian I've been in process during that whole time Don't Ask Don't Tell was being debated, all of the branches were like "It's about damn time" as soon as it was. Next hurdle is removing the combat restrictions on women, I would not be surprised to see that go during my first four years.
@kalin666 I doubt the girls will be allowed in combat. Not front lines at least. They have good reason for it and even me being uber feminist knows its a bad idea. If a woman were captured along with men, the men would break if the woman was being tortured. That and when a woman goes on the battlefield they tend to not take prisoners. There hormones kick in and they see every bad guy as a potential threat on there child or future children's lives. Not true for all, but a vast majority.
