I totally understand this song being about domestic abuse, or even just abuse of a lover, someone who you loved who treats you poorly, that you love unconditionally anyways. There are people whose side i'll always be by (or at least wish I was) no matter ow bad they treat me.

well maybe these guys wanted to interpret it as not black eyes as in shiners, but wear them as the man has literally coal colored eyes who looks to her and she wears his gaze willingly, and to be a good happy couple and not be that nagging old lady kind. maybe they wanted to put it into different perspective. also the pretty boi here has black eyes, if you watch the video it makes it less about domestic abuse. but i love the song for what its worth, this is well done, very artsy

Wait, I think I understand now. In the beginning she sings "all I wantED was to be YOUR housewife" then later after all the violence she just wants to be "a housewife" she's not happy with the marrige, and she doesnt care for the guy anymore after the abuse, but she still wants to be a housewife so she stays with him.She stays up at night "and its nearly midnight" and thinks about what to do and where to go with her life. But yes, the "Ill wear your black eyes" probably symbolizes the bruises.

@TheMarsvin1 I think "I'd wear your black eyes" is a reference to domestic abuse, but the rest of the lyrics are talking about being a "housewife" for someone & doing everything for them, basically sacrificing everything possible for the one you love.

@TheMarsvin1 it might sound like a love song on the onset...as do many relationships in which domestic abuse is a problem, but as the song progresses and she becomes more and more submissive, it starts to sound worse and worse: "i just wanted to be your housewife [...] i'd wear your black eyes, bake you apple pies, i won't ask whys, and i'll try not to cry [...] 'cause it's nearly midnight and all i want is to die a housewife" the sound also sounds like an irregular heartbeat to me.
