I am a 3rd generation chimney sweep I have 33 years experance in sweeping and repairing in the solid fuel industry ! and I see some things are good about thees guilds but I would never hire a sweep cause they are a certified sweep ! paying over $300.00 for a written test does not make you a sweep! only with years of experience that pays attention to detail makes a professional sweep! these guilds are trying to control this industry ! the word certified is a false since of security

Guilds are trying to educate and grow the industry. I am also a 3rd generation sweep. However I choose to advance my families company and take advantage of the assets we now have. The National Chimney Sweep Guild, The CSIA, and even smaller mix groups all help us to expand our company and offer a better service to our loyal customers. The "written test" is actually someone of your caliber should pass easily, so please try and support the education of the industry.

How is the chimney sweep business holding out? I am thinking on going into both chimney sweeping and duct cleaning, up in Northern Michigan we still go allot of wood burners, coal, etc. Do you know if any licenses are required?

It was actually my friend who posted that (sorry), and we both have been sweeping for five years with Chim Chimney in LA/Orange County. And no I wouldn't dare anyone to mess with a chimney sweep, there's a van full of nasty tools we could use as weapons.
