So, basically, Black made an inaccurate move with his bishop in the opening and that was enough to produce a win. Or, did you identify other inaccuracies?
everytime I watch game analyses like this it makes me want to play chess, then I go play some blitz online and I make 5 blunders in one game and play a whole bunch more games that are just totally ugly. I guess what I need to do is start playing more quality chess, less blitz, and maybe even some otb games rather than online.
@MilitaryMan006 in a short blitzy type game he still had chances with a lot of pawns on the board plus his rook n knight .. slim but worth playing on for a bit, see if white blunders
That was great. Thanks! I feel like I just went to chess class. I particularly love your tactic at 6:17 with the forced check/Queen capture position. At first it seems like a inexplicably foolish move, but there is method to your madness.
Very good, like your style as it makes chess look interesting again. The internet and computers killed chess for me 5 years ago, went from one game a month at home to playing and losing countless games against fiendishly good players around the world, then, finally , being coldly "Shredded" by Shredder did it for me. But thanks to these videos have been looking and learning again.....
@94Jannis Because the queen on F2 is watching over that square. Assuming black captures the knight with his black bishop, the rook moves up, capturing the black bishop which black does not want to lose. Not only does he lose the bishop, but now his queen is also in danger, and it can't simply capture the rook, since it's guarded by the queen.
Lol, I thought this through the way Jerry would. It's like his voice haunts me now. :)
Are national masters on average weaker than Fide masters? Started looking it up, but it's really more detail than I'm willing to get into. Why aren't national and international rating scheme brought in line with each other?
After 4...Nh6 you cant play 5.d3 because of 5...Bg4 and then you have to play 6.Bxf7+ but after that black just plays 6...Kd7 and you lose your Queen.
... I like these videos of yours. After watchin' a lot of jrobichess videos and other random tactics/openings/strategy videos, I get to actually see most, if not all of it in action and the mindset of a Master.
Keep the videos commin' if you don't mind. You're helpin' a rookie beat his Grampa! (Lmfao. I'm 22 and still haven't won... Though, I did Draw him 3 times.)
BTW, I forgot to mention, I watch and rewatch your videos because your commentary is fantastic. I always say I am going to be a stronger player after watching your videos. Although that is not always the case, it is my self dillusion, not your commentary :) I love your vids man!!!
I've watched a lot of chess commentary that's abstract but your commentary which shows all of the moves in color really helps me understand things. I'm slowly beginning to see these moves!
The move 5.d3?? which you recommend in the video is a horrible blunder, due to the move 5...Bg4 which traps the queen. But after 4...Nf6 it is a bad placed piece horribly on the edge of the board on the square {h6} which gives you a positional advantage so the move 3...Be7 is bad in itself and the move 4...g6 weakens the dark squares too much.
I've been watching a few of your videos and they're great. I like the commentary, and it's good to hear you describe strong positions and key squares. That's what I need to work on the most, and I appreciate your videos for that.
Also I have a question. At 5:49 would this next combination be good or not? Instead of Qf2 Ke6 check and black has to take with Pe6 (because if he takes with Re6 he loses the Queen with Qd1) then withe plays Qd1 and captures Queen and black has to recapture with Rd8 and white captures Rook with Rd8. I know white does not have a big advantage but black has a badly placed Pawn on e6 and black also lost a Rook while white only lost a Knight.
I didn't calculate that prior to the rook sac. I just felt that there must be something good after Re7. I only noticed the mate when I was reviewing the game for alternative moves. My opponent played Kg8 without much consideration and so I spent no time during the game with what I would do if Kh6.
@ChessNetwork Hey Jerry, I'm just about all the way through all your videos- hope you'll do some more soon!!
I just wanted to clarify- you sacrificed the rook because you felt Kg8 was a defensive move you could exploit? I've been playing chess for years but never seriously and doubt I'm much beyond a beginner- sacrificing pieces more on intuition is completely out of the question for me! nicely played game :)
why do they resign if it's just one move away from checkmate? why not just play the last move? it just leaves a huge feeling of incompleteness inside...
I think it's a way of being polite to one's king as odd as it may sound. Like...I admit defeat, now don't kill me/checkmate me. Similar to that of waving the red flag.
I totally agree with you; there is no point in resigning one move before checkmate. I would always let the opponent finish it off with checkmate if I see they have one in a few moves.
well its cuz after you've played 3 million games, (and/ or actually reach the status or master or gm) u begin 2 have a sense of where the game is going & start seeing 6, 8 or even more moves ahead .... if u already no wat is goin 2 happen .... ie: lose the match, then continuing 2 play is futile & a waste of time
@NinjaDog251 because better players can calculate the position. They understand ahead of time if theyre lost or not. In the case theyre lost, they resign, rather than play out a lost position.
@NinjaDog251 I think in chess its considered impolite to play to the very end in high level games when you know your toast. Basically you are saying you hope your opponent makes a blunder so you can get out of it. So in a way it is an insult to your opponent saying that you have some confidence that you think they might make a novice mistake. In addition to that you are just wasting both of your time.
When there are square weaknesses created on the kingside castle, would you prefer castling queenside? Or do you think that he'd be able to hold onto the bishop in most cases?
It depends on how many weaknesses are created in order to know which direction the king should head to. One should really know where the king's address is going to be prior to making weaknesses.
I can't put a game together at all.I haven't won a single game against ANYONE.I know the rules as far as where the pieces can move etc , the idea of checks mates , stalemates etc but I just can't get a game going right. If you or someone here is willing to tutor me on yahoo chess or elsewhere please respond or send me a message ty.
I apperciate your suggestion but I have a cd with fritz and it also has instructional videos and whatnot , but that doesn't help me at all.I need a person to actually walk me through how to play , otherwise I don't think I'd ever learn. But I can't afford to pay 30 dollars per lesson simply because it would take at least a few lessons for me to start playing on even a begginer level and that would be hundreds of dollars =( .
If I wasn't starting from scratch I would have considered it.

Hi. I recommend you playing openings that produce semi-open OR open positions so that you can become familiar with what squares your pieces function best on.
It amazes the living hell out of me how you know the lines to "mates in 4" from not so common positions and such. Often I watch GM games and I see them offer up pieces which the other opponent doesn't take. And, sure enough, when I replay the game on a chess engine in which I can analyze it, I see that taking up on the "blunder" actually loses positional advantage, material advantage, or results in eventual mate. Just damn, how do you guys see it without going through all that analysis?
I have been playing chess for a while now, but I have always been a weak player because of bad openings. I recently took the opportunity to study under a Fide Master, and even though he is tutoring me personally, I have found that your videos are helping me as much as he is if not more. If I could thank you in a more personal way I would, and one day once I am a better player I would love to have a game with you, to see if I can match you. You will be a Grand Master someday! (if not already)
In the opening against Nh6, if you'd played d3, Bg4 wins the your queen, even after Bxf7+ Kf8
