I am noticing that Gobbi's vibrato is much faster than Neri's. Could one of you opera "insiders" tell me if this a personal stylistic thing or was it due to a particular "school" that he was trained in?
@francesca7564 ... Sorpresa: il Basso è il grande Giulio Neri, basso profondo. Di Siena. Voce splendida, scura, stentorea. Pur essendo mancato molto giovane, ha un repertorio favoloso.
Dramatically, neri is ponderous, and prone to lurch.Still, vocally,he's one of the best.Black,full,rich.Strong,commanding,and malevolent-an Italian Hagen.Wouldn't he have been a great Dracula?
Neri is wonderful!! I'm not a singer or musician so can someone tell me why many great basses are so tall? Is it something to do with size = depth of tone? Please don't laugh at me, I am genuinely puzzled.
Well, fideliosmum, the range of a voice is determined by the size of the larynx (voice box) and therefore the length of the vocal cords. So since size is generally proportional, a tall man is just more likely to have a larger larynx.
However, it's not uncommon for a short man to have a deep voice, or for a tenor to be tall. After all, height and laryngeal size don't have a fixed ratio.
I've listened to many recordings of Rigoletto, and Gobbi's is just the greatest. His pure acting talent and his "cortigiani, vil razza dannata" aria is so powerful it sends chills up my spine. I recommend the recording with Maria Callas as Gilda and di Stefano as the Duke.
talentueux des Rigoletto,Rigoletto c'est lui comme callas était Norma. Et quel jeu de scene!Je frissonne de les entendre alors de revoir, après les avoir vus!
Hearing Gobbi on recording isn't really enough to understand just what drove people wild over him. Vocally, Neri blows him out of the water. But does it matter when your an actor like Gobbi?
gobbi sounds like gobbi and like martinelli and stracciari his voice was distinctive. When I listened to him on stage,no matter how far away you were seated his focussed sound carried and you were aware of a man who knew a bit about voice projection. He was not the worlds best baritone,he was however the best Scarpia and Rigoleto in his day.
Great to see one of the best Rigolettos ever. Gobbis voice production is fabulous. He is able to really shade and colour his crystal clear voice which carries very well. I prefer this kind of singing over those woofy and washed out voices that lack any expression in order to sound big.
Neri is fabulous. Had he lived longer he would have made a huge impact on opera, but he died young of a brain tumor. Siepi said, "If he had lived he would have put us all out of business." Whether you like Gobbi in this will depend on whether you like Gobbi's vocal production.
An absolute classic. If this does not rivet you, you are unrivettable.

Grazie tanto!
Ciao!

think in a violin and a Cello. Yes, the human in this case is the instrument.

And Talvela is the biggest example of that. If andre the giant sang opera his name would be Martti Talvela.

@guy1938 probablement le roi de la caractérisation. Le meilleur de l'après guerre avec Bastianini.

Gobbi IS Rigoletto.
Neri, poor fellow, was a real great bass. Why have men like him die so early? This is so un-justice.
